Check for HDMI first. If your TV has an HDMI input, an external streaming device can add a streaming interface and apps; it does not turn an HD screen into a 4K one. For an older 720p or 1080p TV, the Roku Streaming Stick (HD) is the straightforward match. Choose a 4K device only if your TV supports 4K now—or you want a device to keep using after a TV upgrade.
Can you add streaming apps to an older TV?
For the standalone devices covered here, the key requirement is an HDMI connection. Roku Support says its streaming players work with any television with HDMI, and Google says the Google TV Streamer works with any TV or display with an HDMI connection. Roku’s statement is explicitly limited to HDMI-equipped televisions: it does not establish compatibility with every older TV.

Look for a socket labeled HDMI on the TV, then make sure you have an available port. If the TV has only legacy analog inputs, such as composite connections, these devices are not documented as connecting directly to it. A converter may be an option in some setups, but compatibility and copy-protection behavior have not been established here.
Which device should you choose?
| Device | Best fit | Resolution and picture features | Connection and network | Remote and extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roku Streaming Stick (HD), model 3840R | HD television with HDMI | Up to 1080p; not a 4K device | Compact stick plugs directly into HDMI; dual-band Wi-Fi | Voice remote with TV power, volume, and mute controls; Roku lists a TV-powered design |
| Roku Streaming Stick 4K, model 3820R2 | Compatible 4K TV, or a viewer planning a near-term TV upgrade | Up to 2160p at 60 fps on a compatible 4K TV; Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and HLG | Compact stick plugs directly into HDMI; dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and a long-range Wi-Fi receiver | Voice remote with TV controls |
| Google TV Streamer (4K) | Someone who wants a box, wired Ethernet, or Google smart-home features | Up to 4K; Dolby Vision video and Dolby Atmos audio | Box connects by HDMI; built-in Ethernet; Google recommends a separately sold Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable | 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, Matter and Google Home hub features, and a lost-remote feature |
These are manufacturer specifications, not an independent speed, reliability, or hands-on comparison. Roku’s product page currently advertises “500+ free TV channels” on The Roku Channel; that is a claim about Roku’s own service, not an independent count or a promise that all viewing is free.

Best simple pick for an HD television: Roku Streaming Stick (HD)
If your TV is 720p or 1080p and has HDMI, the Roku Streaming Stick (HD) is the simplest fit among these options. Roku specifies output up to 1080p, so it can stream on an HD set without paying for 4K capability the screen cannot display. The stick connects directly to HDMI and does not need a separate HDMI cable, according to Roku’s compatibility guidance.
Roku lists dual-band Wi-Fi and a voice remote with TV power, volume, and mute controls for model 3840R. The remote’s TV controls can reduce the need to reach for the television’s original remote for basic functions.

Roku Streaming Stick 4K
Roku specifies up to 2160p at 60 frames per second for the Streaming Stick 4K (model 3820R2) when connected to a compatible 4K TV. It supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and HLG, but those formats depend on compatible TV hardware and content. Roku also lists dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, a long-range Wi-Fi receiver, and a voice remote with TV controls.

Google TV Streamer (4K)
The Google TV Streamer is a box-style option rather than a stick. Google lists up to 4K output, built-in Ethernet, 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and Matter/Google Home features. Google recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 certified cable for optimal performance; the cable is sold separately.
Rank #3
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
A 4K streamer can be a reasonable choice if you expect to replace an HD TV soon, but it will not raise that TV’s resolution. Google says output is limited by the display and the content; on a 1080p display, the Streamer can stream only up to 1080p. Roku likewise says 4K and HDR features require compatible TV features and content. For Roku’s sticks, the device plugs directly into HDMI; Roku’s separate-cable guidance for 4K/HDR applies to non-stick players, not the Streaming Stick.

What you need beyond the device
- An HDMI input: Confirm the TV has a free HDMI port before buying.
- Internet access: Online streaming requires an internet connection. Wi-Fi is listed for both Roku sticks; the Google TV Streamer also has built-in Ethernet.
- Separate service subscriptions, when required: The device supplies an interface and access to apps; it does not include every paid streaming subscription. App availability and subscription terms vary by service and location.
- Compatible hardware for premium formats: 4K and HDR require a TV that supports the relevant format, as well as compatible content. A 4K label on the streamer alone is not enough.
How to decide in a minute
- No HDMI port? These cited devices are not shown to connect directly to a TV with only legacy analog inputs. Do not assume an adapter or converter will solve every compatibility issue.
- HD screen with HDMI? Pick the Roku Streaming Stick (HD) for a direct, up-to-1080p match.
- 4K TV with HDMI? Compare Roku’s compact stick and the Google box by the picture formats, network connection, remote, and smart-home features you want.
- Planning a TV upgrade? A 4K streamer can carry over to a compatible future TV, but you will not get 4K from the current HD screen.
