The NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro is the best-supported all-in-one choice in the available documentation for Plex, Kodi, and local media playback. NVIDIA documents it as both a Plex player and a Plex Media Server host, with support for USB drives and network-attached storage (NAS). Kodi offers an Android build, but warns that performance depends on the specific device. That makes SHIELD a well-documented fit—not a proven winner for every file, home-theater setup, or workload.
Choose a Plex player, a server, or both
A Plex client plays media served by a Plex Media Server elsewhere on your network. A Plex server stores or accesses the library and makes it available to clients. If you already run a server on a computer or NAS, your streaming device may only need to be a client. If you want one box to play media and host the library, SHIELD TV Pro is the option directly documented for both jobs.

NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV User Guide says the device comes with the Plex client and Plex Media Server pre-installed. NVIDIA also describes hardware A/V transcoding and access to media on SHIELD storage, USB drives, and NAS. Its guide characterizes the Plex server as using less than 10 W; this is NVIDIA’s stated figure, not an independent power measurement or a guarantee for every workload.

| Setup | Best suited to | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| SHIELD TV Pro with Plex client | Playing a Plex library hosted on another device | NVIDIA documents the Plex client as pre-installed. Server hosting is optional if another device already runs Plex Media Server. |
| SHIELD TV Pro with attached USB storage | A local library connected directly to the player/server | NVIDIA documents reading and writing media on USB-connected drives. The drive is separate hardware; no drive is included by virtue of this capability. |
| SHIELD TV Pro with a NAS | A larger or shared library available to multiple devices | NVIDIA documents NAS access and recommends Ethernet between SHIELD and the router; for NAS as the primary source, it recommends Ethernet for both SHIELD and NAS. |
| Another Android streaming device running Kodi | Readers who specifically want Kodi on an Android device | Kodi lists an Android download, but warns that results depend on the capabilities of the individual Android device. Verify the exact model and software build. |
What Kodi support means in practice
Kodi’s official Android download page lists version 21.3 Omega and Android downloads. That establishes Android availability, not equal compatibility across all Android TV boxes, sticks, or operating-system builds. Check the exact device against Kodi’s installation guidance rather than treating “Android” as a guarantee that Kodi will install and perform well.

If Kodi is essential, confirm that the exact model can install the app and that the playback chain handles your actual files. A device’s general platform label alone does not establish support for a particular codec, HDR profile, audio track, or subtitle format.
Why a Plex library may still transcode
Plex can use Direct Play, Direct Stream, or transcoding, depending on the file and client. Direct playback depends on the client being compatible with the media. Transcoding can be needed when the client cannot handle a format or when the server must reduce bitrate or resolution. Some subtitle selections can also cause Plex to burn subtitles into the video, which triggers video transcoding.
NVIDIA’s support page, updated September 29, 2021, says SHIELD hardware acceleration supports 1080p video transcoding and recommends keeping free storage available for transcoding. This is NVIDIA’s documented capability, not evidence that every combination of codec, subtitle, resolution, and concurrent workload will work without limits. If a file unexpectedly transcodes, check the Plex playback details, selected subtitle track, quality setting, and client compatibility.

Check format compatibility across the whole playback chain
NVIDIA describes SHIELD support for containers including MKV and H.265/HEVC playback up to 4K HDR at 60 fps, with an app such as Plex or Kodi needed for playback. Treat that as a product capability statement, not a promise that every MKV file will direct-play. Container, video profile, audio format, subtitles, playback app, and the TV or receiver all affect the result.
Plex’s format guidance also cautions that format support and video-quality limits vary by device. Its smart-TV compatibility page does not cover the Plex app on Android TV, Fire TV, Roku TV, or similar platforms, so a smart-TV chart should not be applied indiscriminately to streaming boxes. Check compatibility for the exact device and app you plan to use.

Use USB for a straightforward attached library
A USB drive connected to SHIELD is a direct option for local storage. NVIDIA documents SHIELD Plex Media Server reading and writing media on USB drives. Choose the drive capacity and format for your library and device setup; the cited documentation does not establish one universally appropriate drive size.

Use a NAS for a shared or larger collection
A NAS can make a library available to more than one device without keeping the media on the streaming box. NVIDIA’s support guidance recommends Ethernet between SHIELD and the router for server performance, and recommends Ethernet for both SHIELD and NAS when the NAS is the primary media source. This is setup advice from NVIDIA, not a measured throughput guarantee.
Allow working room for transcoding
If SHIELD is hosting Plex Media Server, leave free storage as NVIDIA advises for transcoding. The need is distinct from the space required for the media library itself.
Quick Recap
A practical buying and setup checklist
- Decide where Plex Media Server will run. If it already runs on a computer or NAS, you may need only a playback client. If the streaming device must also host the server, SHIELD TV Pro is the directly documented option here.
- Confirm Kodi on the exact model. Check Kodi’s Android download and installation guidance for the device, rather than relying on the word “Android” in its specifications.
- Test representative files and tracks. Check the video, audio, HDR, and subtitle combinations you actually use in the intended app and TV/receiver chain.
- Choose storage for how you watch. Use USB for a directly attached library or consider NAS when the collection must be shared across devices.
- Wire the network where practical. Follow NVIDIA’s Ethernet recommendation for SHIELD, and for both SHIELD and NAS when NAS is the primary source.
- Check actual Plex playback behavior. Confirm whether a file is Direct Playing, Direct Streaming, or transcoding; if video transcodes unexpectedly, inspect subtitle selection and quality settings.
