For a TV near the router, use 5 GHz as a practical default; choose 6 GHz instead if both the router and streaming device support Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, local rules allow it, and the signal is strong where the TV sits. Use 2.4 GHz when distance, walls, or compatibility make it the more reliable option. 4K streaming does not inherently require 6 GHz: what matters is a stable connection that meets your streaming service’s speed needs.
How the three bands compare
| Band | When it makes sense | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | The TV is far from the router, separated by obstacles, or needs broader device compatibility. | It generally reaches farther and passes through walls better, but tends to offer lower throughput and more congestion. |
| 5 GHz | The TV is reasonably close to the router and supports 5 GHz. It is a sensible starting point for streaming. | It generally offers faster throughput than 2.4 GHz, but has shorter range and weaker wall penetration. |
| 6 GHz | The TV is close to a compatible router, and you want to use a less congested band where available. | It has the weakest wall penetration and shortest reach of these choices; both the router and client need support, and regional availability varies. |
These are general tendencies, not speed guarantees. The router, streaming device, distance, walls, interference, channel width, and network configuration all affect the result. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi guidance describes 5 GHz as better suited to movie streaming than 2.4 GHz because of its faster throughput, while noting its shorter range and poorer obstacle penetration. ASUS also notes that speed and latency depend on signal, interference, channel width, and device specifications, not frequency alone, in its band comparison.

Does 4K streaming need 6 GHz?
No. Netflix recommends an internet speed of 15 Mbps or higher for UHD/4K playback. That is Netflix’s service recommendation, not a Wi-Fi-band requirement or a guarantee that every 4K stream will work at that speed under every network condition. See Netflix’s internet connection speed recommendations.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If your connection at the TV is stable and meets the streaming service’s requirement, changing bands may not visibly improve playback. That is a practical inference from the service threshold and the bands’ trade-offs, not a universal measured outcome. A band label alone cannot tell you whether a connection will sustain a stream: test it at the TV’s location.

Check compatibility before choosing 6 GHz
A 6 GHz network is usable only when the router or access point and the TV or streaming device support it. Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 devices may support 6 GHz, but confirm the specifications for your exact models. Apple’s 6 GHz guidance explains that compatible Apple devices need a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router or access point to join the corresponding network; supported features and availability vary by region. Local rules also determine which 6 GHz channels can be used.
For devices that cannot use 6 GHz, compare 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz instead. Do not buy a Wi-Fi 6E router solely to stream 4K: the router and client both need compatible support, and a stronger connection on an existing band may already be sufficient.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Choose based on the signal where the TV is
- Check which bands the TV or streaming device supports. Consult its specifications or network settings; do not assume it can connect to every band your router broadcasts.
- Find out how your router names its bands. With one network name across bands, the router or client may select a band automatically. Apple recommends a single network name across bands for best compatibility on supported Apple devices; Windows may also select an available band when a network uses one name.
- Measure the connection at the TV. If the router has separate network names for each band, connect to each supported option in turn and run the same speed test from the TV’s location. Compare stability as well as speed, and repeat after any changes.
- Keep the band that performs reliably at that spot. If 6 GHz falters through walls or at distance, try 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz. The highest frequency is not automatically the best choice for a particular room.
- If every band is weak there, address coverage. First consider router placement, then test whether an additional access point or mesh system improves the signal where the TV sits.
Microsoft’s guidance on Wi-Fi bands also recommends measuring network performance in different parts of the home before changing settings.
What 6 GHz trial results can—and cannot—tell you
A 2021 Wireless Broadband Alliance announcement reported a CableLabs and Intel field trial using an ASUS access point in a 3,600-square-foot, two-story home with a basement. Near the access point, the trial reported 1.7 TCP Gbps downlink and 1.2 TCP Gbps uplink with 160 MHz Wi-Fi 6E channels. Those are results from that particular equipment, channel width, and home—not typical speeds to expect or a measured improvement in 4K playback. The announcement quoted WBA CEO Tiago Rodrigues describing the trial as evidence of Wi-Fi 6E and 6 GHz performance in a demanding home environment; that characterization refers to the trial, not a guarantee for every household.
