The best chess stream overlay depends on what viewers need to see: for tournament commentary, capture Chess.com’s Events Analysis board in OBS; for a branded scene, add a chess-themed design around it; and for live player details or statistics, consider a specialized browser-source overlay after checking its current features. Keep the board, pieces, names, and clocks readable at the size they will appear on stream.
How to choose a chess stream overlay
An overlay can mean the chessboard itself, a decorative scene design, or extra widgets such as alerts and chat. Decide which layer you need before choosing a tool; a themed frame does not necessarily provide live game data.

- Board legibility: Can viewers make out squares, pieces, player names, and clocks in the finished layout?
- Live position or analysis: Must viewers continue seeing the current game while you explore a variation?
- Space and cropping: Can the board, webcam, names, clocks, and widgets fit without crowding?
- Data and synchronization: Does the source only decorate the scene, or does it provide player details, clocks, or statistics? Check whether synchronization is actually documented.
- Customization and access: Can you change board colors and pieces, and is the tool free, subscription-gated, or dependent on a service?
Best option for tournament commentary: Chess.com Events Analysis
For a Chess.com tournament broadcast, the Events page’s Analysis view provides a customizable board that can be captured as a scene layer. Chess.com documents controls for board and piece appearance, coordinates, compact player names and clocks, engine and evaluation controls, move classification, and right-click arrows or colored square highlights. Capture the analysis board in OBS
- Open the relevant Chess.com Events page and switch to its Analysis view. Set the board appearance, coordinates, names, clocks, and analysis controls for the layout you want viewers to see.
- In OBS, add a Window Capture or Screen Capture source for the browser or display showing the board. Crop the capture to include only the elements needed in your scene.
- Prefer Window Capture when practical. Chess.com says it is generally preferred because other windows overlapping the browser will not affect the capture.
- If you need a transparent-looking board layer, use OBS Chroma Key to remove or replace the analysis-page background, then check the edges and board colors in the final scene.
Chess.com’s guide notes that multiple crops of one window capture can use less memory and CPU than multiple separate captures. This can help when the same browser window needs to supply more than one cropped scene element.

Keep the live position visible while analyzing
When the host needs to study variations without losing the current game position on screen, enable Live Board Tracking and open the linked tracking board in another browser tab. The tracking board follows the selected live game but does not mirror analysis moves made on the main board. Capture that second board separately; Chess.com also recommends Window Capture for it.

Chess.com’s help page, “How do I start streaming on Chess.com?”, covers platform streaming guidance and its streamer program. Its requirements should be checked on the live page before applying because terms can change.

Best for a ready-made chess look: Streamlabs designs
Streamlabs’ November 15, 2023 article, “Best Overlays for Chess Gameplay,” lists Chess Galaxy, Cubic Wave, Black on Black, Block, and Nightmode. In that dated article, Black on Black is labeled free, while Chess Galaxy, Cubic Wave, and Block are labeled free for Streamlabs Ultra subscribers. Check the current library and subscription conditions before choosing a preset. The listing does not establish that these designs supply live chess data, so treat them as visual styling unless the current product listing says otherwise.
Best for extra player details or statistics: browser-source overlays
ChessBhumi advertises a transparent browser-source overlay with player names, ratings, and clocks that tick live. ChesStats advertises live Chess.com and Lichess player-performance statistics, overlay columns, alerts, palette options, and multiple output formats. Those are vendor claims, not independently verified features. Check each service’s current availability, account requirements, pricing, and behavior before relying on it in a broadcast.

Add alerts, chat, and labels as separate layers
OBS’s official Browser Source documentation explains how alert providers can supply alerts, event lists, chat boxes, and labels through a provider overlay URL. Add the URL as a Browser source in the relevant OBS scene. OBS names Streamlabs, StreamElements, NerdOrDie, and OWN3D Pro as examples of providers. These widgets complement a captured board; they are not a substitute for a readable chessboard.

A camera can add a face-cam box, but it is not required for the chessboard or overlay to work. Chess.com’s 2023 community streaming guide mentions the Logitech C922 among streamer webcam recommendations; that older mention is not a current comparative camera test, so do not treat it as a definitive best choice.

Check the finished layout before going live
- View the full scene at the actual output size and confirm pieces, coordinates, names, and clocks remain legible.
- Make sure decorative frames and chat do not obscure squares or important game information.
- If you use both an analysis board and a tracking board, confirm that viewers can tell which one is the live position.
- Trigger a test alert or chat widget before a broadcast and verify that its browser source is visible in the correct scene.
- Check the current access terms of any preset or specialized overlay you plan to use.
