Best Steam Settings to Check Before Downloading a Large Game

Adjust Steam’s bandwidth cap, queue and update behavior, and confirm the library drive has enough room before starting a large game download.

Before starting a large Steam download, check four things: the download speed cap, the queue, automatic-update behavior, and the library drive’s available space. These settings help avoid an unintended limit, competing updates, or an install that cannot fit. None guarantees a faster download; bandwidth controls and storage controls solve different problems.

Steam’s main controls are under Steam > Settings > Downloads. Adjust them to suit your connection and household rather than applying a universal “best” setting.

1. Check Steam’s download speed limit

Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and inspect Limit Download Speed. If it is enabled with a low cap and you want Steam to use more of your available connection, raise the limit or disable it. Keep a limit if you need Steam to leave bandwidth for other people or applications. Steam describes the setting as useful when downloads cause connection problems or when you want to limit Steam’s bandwidth. Steam Support explains the download speed limit and rate units.

Check the units before comparing the displayed rate with your internet plan. Steam may show kilobytes or megabytes per second, while providers commonly advertise megabits per second. MB/s and Mbps are not interchangeable, so a Steam display that looks numerically lower than your plan does not by itself show a problem.

2. Put the game in the right place in the queue

Open the Downloads manager and review what Steam is already downloading or updating. If the game is waiting behind queued updates, reorder the queue so the intended download comes first. Steam’s download manager supports viewing progress and manually changing queue order. Steam Support’s download and update guidance covers queue management and update preferences.

3. Keep automatic updates from competing at the wrong time

Steam lets you set a daily period for automatic game updates and configure update behavior for individual games, including an option to update only when you launch a game. Use these controls if background updates are likely to compete with the large download or with other network use.

A schedule is not a blanket stop on all downloading: it governs automatic updates, not downloads you start manually. Also, launching a game with an update pending can trigger that update. If queue priority and update preferences do not fit your schedule, plan around the update behavior rather than assuming Steam will stay idle.

4. Confirm the library folder has room

Before downloading, check which Steam library folder the game will use and how much free space that drive has. Steam can use library folders on multiple drives, lets you choose a folder for a new installation, and can move an existing installation without downloading it again. The needed room depends on the particular game and the drive’s current free space; check the game’s store listing rather than relying on a generic capacity recommendation.

Steam Support says, “External hard drives are not recommended for use with Steam or Steam’s games,” citing potential performance issues and unexpected disconnections. If an external drive is unreliable, Steam advises using an internal drive instead. Steam Support’s guidance on games appearing uninstalled discusses library locations and external drives.

5. Choose whether downloads should continue while you play

By default, Steam pauses downloads when you launch a game so it can prioritize the game’s network activity. If you want the download to continue, enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay in Downloads settings. Continuing a large download can affect network performance while playing; if it does, Steam suggests setting a bandwidth limit. Steam Support documents download and update controls, and its article on the pause behavior explains the gameplay setting: Downloads automatically pause when launching a game.

6. Save download-cache clearing for actual problems

Clear Download Cache is not a routine speed-boost setting. Steam presents it as a troubleshooting step when a game will not download or start. Clearing the cache does not affect installed games, but it requires signing in to Steam again. Steam Support’s download and update guidance includes cache clearing information.

Choose settings for your situation

What matters most What to do
Let Steam use more of the connection Raise or disable Limit Download Speed if a cap is restricting the download.
Share bandwidth with others or other apps Keep a suitable download cap rather than assuming unlimited use is best.
Avoid background competition Reorder the queue and review automatic-update schedules and per-game preferences.
Avoid an install failure or unreliable location Choose a library folder with enough free space; consider an internal drive if an external one disconnects or performs poorly.
Download while gaming Enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay only if you accept the possible network-performance trade-off.
