There is no single best Steam Input steering setting for every racing game or controller. Start with the game’s recommended layout for your connected controller, then make small, one-at-a-time adjustments and test them in that game. Valve’s documentation explains how to find and compare layouts, but does not prescribe universal steering deadzone, sensitivity, or response-curve values.
How to configure a controller for a racing game on Steam
- Connect your controller and confirm Steam recognizes its type. Open the game’s controller configuration from the game’s Steam page or controller settings, following Valve’s Getting Started for Players guidance.
- Inspect the recommended layouts first. In the game’s configuration screen, look for a layout intended for the physical controller you are using. Steam normally hides layouts for other controller models because their controls may not match. Valve describes the available recommended, personal, community, and template configurations in Browsing Configurations.
- Preview community layouts before applying one. Read the layout description and check both its intended controller and control scheme. A community layout may suit your game better than the recommended one, but it is not automatically the right match.
- Adjust a single behavior, then test it in the target game. Try the game’s own controller options as well as Steam Input controls. Change only one setting at a time so you can tell what affected steering or another control; keep the layout that behaves predictably for you.
Which Steam Input layout should you choose?
| Option | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended | A layout surfaced for the game by Steam or its developer. | Confirm it targets the controller you connected, then test it in the game. |
| Community | A configuration shared by another Steam user. | Preview it and read its description; verify its device and control scheme before applying it. |
| Template | A starting configuration offered by Steam. | Check that its bindings fit the game and controller, then customize if needed. |
These labels describe where a configuration comes from, not a measured ranking of steering performance. Steam Input can translate controls through legacy remapping or work with a game’s native action-based integration, so the same layout or setting can behave differently between games. Valve explains those modes in General Concepts.

Why there is no universal deadzone or sensitivity value
Valve’s official guidance does not establish a cross-game “best” steering deadzone, sensitivity, or response curve. A value that feels suitable in one game is not a documented universal recommendation for another. Use the game’s own options and Steam Input controls as separate tuning points, and judge changes in the game you intend to play rather than relying on a preset number from another title.
Controller and racing-wheel compatibility
Steamworks lists Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation, Switch Pro, and DirectInput gamepads in its Steam Input Devices overview. That establishes support in the configurator; it does not mean every game offers identical features or behaves the same way with each controller.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Wheels need a separate compatibility check. Valve’s developer guidance says: “If your game has flight stick or racing wheel support you’ll want to uncheck the box for Generic/DirectInput controllers because Steam doesn’t support remapping those devices.” This is developer-facing guidance, not a guarantee that every wheel or game has the same behavior. Check support for the particular device and game before relying on Steam Input to remap wheel controls. See Valve’s Steam Input Gamepad Emulation – Best Practices.

What to check if a layout does not work
- Check the Steam overlay. Confirm it opens while the game is running; the overlay is part of the troubleshooting path in Valve’s Steam Controller (2015) – Configurations troubleshooting.
- Check gamepad support and the input mode. A game’s support for controllers and its use of native Steam Input actions or legacy remapping affect what a configuration can do.
- Look for conflicting software. Another overlay or remapping tool may interfere with Steam Input. Close or disable conflicting tools temporarily to see whether the layout starts working.
- Try another suitable community layout. Preview its description and confirm it is made for your controller before applying it.
