PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe most reliable approach is a stack, not a single search box: use Steam’s specific tag and feature filters to define the kind of indie game you want, improve recommendations with the Discovery Queue, Wishlist, Follow and Ignore controls, add human judgment through Steam Curators, then screen shortlisted games with SteamDB’s AI Content Disclosed tag and the disclosure on each store page.
This process can reduce unwanted AI-disclosure results, but it cannot prove that a game contains no generative-AI assets. SteamDB’s signal depends on a developer’s disclosure, so a missing tag means only that no matching disclosure was found.

The best tool stack at a glance
Start with Steam Search, not a broad “Indie” browse page. Search by a narrow combination of subgenre, mechanic, mood and visual-style tags, then add operating-system, language and Steam-feature filters when they matter to you. Use the results to seed your Discovery Queue and Wishlist, mark poor matches Not Interested, and follow Curators whose recommendations reflect your taste. Before buying or installing a finalist, check SteamDB for AI Content Disclosed and read the game’s own disclosure on its Steam store page.

| Tool | Best use | AI-content signal | Data and judgment | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Search and tag filters | Precise catalog discovery across genre, mechanics, mood, visual style, features, operating systems and languages | No universal native filter documented for hiding every game that uses generative AI | First-party Steam catalog metadata; tags can be applied by developers, eligible players and moderators | Low after you learn a useful tag combination |
| Discovery Queue, Wishlist, Follow and Ignore | Turning browsing into progressively better recommendations | None by itself | Personalized from your gameplay and explicit choices; ignored products are excluded from future recommendations and featured spots | Low, but requires repeated feedback |
| Steam Curators | Human-selected recommendations and short reviews | Only what the curator chooses to mention | Public recommendations from individuals, organizations and groups | Low to moderate; finding a curator with matching taste takes time |
| SteamDB AI Content Disclosed | Flagging games whose Steam store page contains Valve’s required AI disclosure | Strongest researched screening signal, but disclosure-based and incomplete | Automatically applied by SteamDB when the specific disclosure statement appears | Moderate; check every finalist and read the disclosure |
| Manual store-page check | Understanding what was disclosed and judging remaining uncertainty | Read the developer’s wording, screenshots, trailer and reviews | Direct evidence for that product page, not a guarantee about undisclosed use | Moderate to high for a large shortlist |
Steam’s own Discovery Update describes the Discovery Queue as “a powerful, new way of exploring the most popular new releases that you haven’t yet seen.” It also documents personalized recommendations, Curator recommendations and search tools that work by name, tag or description.

Why the broad Indie tag is not enough
More than 82,000 games—about 53% of all games on Steam—carried the Indie tag in Valve’s 2026 store-tag update. That makes the label useful as a starting category, but too wide to identify a particular kind of hidden gem.
Steamworks documentation says tags power browse hubs, tag searches, tag-driven recommendations and dynamic collections. Developers, players with non-limited accounts and moderators can apply them, so a tag is metadata rather than a permanent editorial verdict. A game can gain, lose or accumulate tags, and different people may apply broad labels differently.
Valve also says the top 20 tags influence visibility and similarity, while common tags have less recommendation influence than specific ones. In practice, a search built around one broad label gives the system little information about your intent. A stack such as a specific subgenre plus a mechanic, mood and visual style is more discriminating than Indie alone.

1. Define the experience before choosing tags
Write down the outcome you want in ordinary language: for example, “a short, atmospheric exploration game with environmental puzzles” or “a turn-based tactics game with deck-building.” This prevents you from selecting tags merely because they are popular.
Translate that sentence into four kinds of metadata:
- Subgenre: the game’s structural category, such as a platformer, immersive sim, farming simulation or turn-based strategy game.
- Mechanic: the repeated activity that matters most, such as deck-building, crafting, stealth, dialogue choices or automation.
- Mood or theme: the emotional or narrative direction, such as atmospheric, cozy, dark, mystery or psychological.
- Visual style: the presentation you are prepared to play, such as pixel graphics, hand-drawn, minimalist or retro.
These are examples of tag roles, not a claim that every game uses the same labels. Choose the closest available tags in Steam’s interface and remove a tag when it makes the result set too broad.
2. Search by name, tag or description
Steam’s documented search supports names, tags and descriptions. Begin with a specific tag or phrase, inspect the resulting tag page, and then narrow it with additional tags. If a term produces mostly well-known releases, add a mechanic or mood rather than adding more copies of “Indie.”

3. Add the filters that eliminate unusable results
Use Steam’s filters for Steam features, operating system and language when those constraints affect whether you can play or understand a game. A technically excellent recommendation is still a poor result if it lacks your required platform support, interface language or feature.
Apply practical filters early when you have a large catalog to scan. Apply subjective filters—such as mood or visual style—after you have confirmed that the remaining games actually use the mechanic you wanted. This keeps a visually attractive but mechanically irrelevant result from crowding out better matches.
4. Inspect tags as evidence, not as a score
Open promising store pages and look at the full tag set. A specific tag that appears near the top is generally more useful for similarity than a very common category, but the presence of a tag does not establish quality, originality or the absence of AI-generated material. Use tags to decide what to inspect next, then judge the game from its description, media and reviews.
Use the Discovery Queue to train recommendations
The Discovery Queue presents suggested games based on your gameplay and lets you follow, wishlist, purchase or mark a title not interested. Treat each pass as a feedback session rather than an endless list to click through.
- Open the Discovery Queue from Steam’s store discovery tools and read the short description, tags and media for each suggestion.
- Wishlist a genuine candidate. This records interest without requiring an immediate purchase and gives you a shortlist to screen later.
- Follow a game when you want store updates or announcements while you continue evaluating it.
- Choose Not Interested for a clear mismatch. Steam says ignored products are excluded from future recommendations and featured spots, so use the control for genres, mechanics or presentations you know you do not want.
- Repeat after your choices change. A queue becomes more useful when positive and negative decisions describe the same taste instead of being skipped indiscriminately.
Do not use Not Interested as a substitute for an AI-content check: it changes recommendation behavior, but it does not establish why a game was excluded or label it for other searches.
Add human taste with Steam Curators
Valve defines Steam Curators as “individuals, organizations, and groups that publish reviews and recommendations in a public forum on Steam.” Their picks can appear on the Steam home page and in the community activity feed.
Curators are most useful after you know your niche. Look for a curator whose description, review history and selection policy match the combination of genre and mechanics you care about. A curator focused on atmospheric puzzle games may be more useful for that purpose than a large account that covers every release.

Read the reasoning behind a recommendation when available. A curator’s endorsement can reveal pacing, difficulty, accessibility, controller support or design priorities that tags cannot. It is still a person’s taste, not an objective quality rating and not proof about AI use. Keep several curators with distinct but compatible perspectives rather than treating one feed as authoritative.

Screen for disclosed AI content with SteamDB
What the AI Content Disclosed tag means
SteamDB states: “This tag identifies games where developers have disclosed the use of generative artificial intelligence anywhere in their product or marketing.” SteamDB applies the tag automatically when the specific AI disclosure statement appears on a game’s Steam store page. That includes cases in which AI was used only for marketing assets.
For each game on your Wishlist or Curator shortlist, search SteamDB’s game record and look for AI Content Disclosed. If it is present, open the Steam store page and read the disclosure instead of assuming that every asset or system was generated. Valve distinguishes pre-generated content from live-generated content, and its policy includes a reporting path for illegal live-generated content.
What the tag cannot prove
A missing SteamDB tag means that SteamDB did not find the matching disclosure statement. It does not prove that a game has no generative-AI asset or process. The system depends on a developer making the disclosure Valve requires, and the researched Steam materials do not establish a universal native Steam control that hides every AI-using game.
Use the tag as a screening signal with a clear boundary: it can identify disclosed use, but it cannot identify undisclosed use. Avoid describing an untagged game as “AI-free.” A more accurate record is “no matching disclosure found on the checked store page,” together with the date you checked it.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Read the store page for context
Valve’s AI-content policy requires developers to disclose relevant generative-AI use, and the disclosure appears on the game’s Steam store page. Read the wording carefully and note whether it describes:
- Pre-generated content: assets prepared before release, such as images, text, audio or other material included in the product or marketing.
- Live-generated content: material created while the game runs or responds to a player.
- Marketing-only use: AI involved in promotional imagery or other advertising material rather than the playable game.
Then compare the wording with the page’s screenshots, trailer and description. Reviews can provide additional observations, but they are user reports and may be mistaken or outdated. Record what is explicitly disclosed separately from what you infer from a visual or a reviewer comment.

A repeatable end-to-end workflow
- Write your target in one sentence. Include the genre structure, main mechanic, mood and acceptable visual style.
- Open Steam Search. Search by a specific tag or description term and select the closest subgenre, mechanic, mood and visual tags.
- Apply practical filters. Set operating system, language and Steam-feature requirements before reviewing a long list.
- Inspect the first result set. Remove tags that broaden the results too far and add a more specific tag when the list remains generic.
- Save plausible candidates. Wishlist games that match the experience, and follow those for which you want updates.
- Use the Discovery Queue. Mark obvious mismatches Not Interested and keep the queue’s feedback consistent with your stated preferences.
- Check Curators. Compare your candidates with recommendations from curators whose niche and review history fit your taste.
- Run the AI-disclosure screen. Check each finalist on SteamDB for AI Content Disclosed, then open the linked Steam store page and read the disclosure.
- Review the evidence. Compare the disclosure with screenshots, trailer, description and current reviews. Note the exact uncertainty instead of assigning an unsupported “AI-free” label.
- Decide using your own threshold. Keep games with no matching disclosure if that evidence level is acceptable to you; remove disclosed games when your requirement is to avoid disclosed generative-AI use.
Useful tag combinations to try
The combinations below show how to construct a query. They are starting patterns, not guaranteed Steam taxonomies; select the closest labels that Steam currently offers.
| Goal | Subgenre role | Mechanic role | Mood role | Visual role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exploration with puzzles | Adventure or exploration | Environmental puzzles | Atmospheric or mystery | Hand-drawn or minimalist |
| Systems-heavy strategy | Turn-based strategy | Deck-building or automation | Complex or dark | Retro or stylized |
| Relaxed management | Simulation or management | Crafting or resource management | Cozy | Pixel graphics or colorful |
| Stealth narrative | Action or immersive sim | Stealth and dialogue choices | Psychological or suspense | Realistic or cinematic |
If a combination returns too few games, remove the visual tag first; visual labels often narrow a catalog more aggressively than the experience-defining mechanic. If it returns too many, add a second mechanic or a stronger mood constraint instead of relying on the general Indie label.
Common failure modes and fixes
Every result is labeled Indie
Cause: the query uses a category shared by roughly half of Steam’s catalog. Fix: add a specific subgenre, mechanic, mood and visual tag, then inspect the top tags on several results.
The search finds the right theme but the wrong gameplay
Cause: mood or subject tags are carrying the query without a mechanic tag. Fix: make the repeated activity—such as stealth, deck-building, crafting or dialogue choices—the required second tag.
The Discovery Queue keeps showing games you dislike
Cause: mismatches have not been marked, or earlier choices do not represent your current taste. Fix: use Not Interested consistently for clear mismatches and continue making explicit wishlist and follow decisions for genuine candidates.
A curator recommends a game that contains disclosed AI use
Cause: Curator recommendations are human taste signals, not AI-content verification. Fix: run the SteamDB check and read the store disclosure independently for every finalist.
SteamDB shows no AI Content Disclosed tag
Cause: no matching disclosure statement was found, or the page has changed since it was indexed. Fix: read the current Steam store page, record the date and wording you found, and describe the result as “no matching disclosure found,” never as proof of no AI use.
Best Value
The store disclosure is vague
Cause: the page may identify AI use without specifying every asset or workflow. Fix: separate the explicit statement from your assumptions, inspect the media and reviews, and apply your own tolerance for uncertainty.
Choosing the right tool for your priority
When catalog breadth matters most
Use Steam Search and the Discovery Queue. Search reaches the catalog directly, while the queue surfaces titles you have not seen and lets your choices shape later recommendations.
When mechanical precision matters most
Use multiple specific tags, with the mechanic treated as essential rather than optional. Steam’s documentation gives specific tags more recommendation influence than common tags, so avoid building the query around Indie alone.
When human judgment matters most
Use Curators after narrowing the catalog. Their public recommendations can explain why a game fits a niche, but check more than one curator and retain your own criteria.
When avoiding disclosed AI use matters most
Use SteamDB’s AI Content Disclosed tag as a shortlist filter, then verify the current store-page disclosure. This is the strongest researched signal for disclosed use, not a certification that a game contains no generative-AI material.
When transparency and freshness matter most
Prefer evidence you can inspect now: the current Steam store disclosure, the visible tag set, the date of your check and the wording of recent reviews. Steam metadata and disclosures can change, so a saved note should include when you checked it rather than implying a permanent status.
Bottom line for an AI-conscious indie search
No single Steam discovery feature solves both discovery and AI-content verification. Steam’s specific tags, filters and recommendation controls are the foundation for finding the right kind of indie game; Curators add context from human reviewers; SteamDB adds an automatic, disclosure-based flag. The responsible conclusion for an untagged game is limited but useful: no matching disclosure was found at the time you checked—not that the game is proven free of AI-generated assets.
