Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For most PC buyers with an NVMe-compatible system, a 1TB or 2TB PCIe 4.0 SSD is the sensible starting point. Consider PCIe 5.0 if your system supports it and your work involves demanding, sustained transfers; choose a 2.5-inch SATA SSD when an older PC lacks NVMe support. Check compatibility before comparing speed or price.
Which SSD should you buy?
There is no single best SSD for every PC. The right choice depends first on what your computer can accept, then on capacity, workload, endurance, thermals, and price. The current buying guides reviewed by Tom’s Hardware, PCWorld, and TechRadar point to PCIe 4.0 NVMe as the mainstream balance for compatible systems.

- For a mainstream desktop or gaming PC: start with a 1TB or 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive. Tom’s Hardware names the Samsung 990 Pro its best overall and gaming SSD; PCWorld recommends the WD Black SN7100 as a mainstream PCIe 4.0 option.
- For intensive large-file work: consider a compatible PCIe 5.0 drive, but compare sustained performance, capacity, endurance, and cooling—not just the peak sequential rating.
- For a PC without NVMe support: choose a 2.5-inch SATA SSD if that is the interface your system accepts.
These are recommendations reported by the publications, not results from independent testing for this article. Model availability, exact variants, prices, and warranty terms can change; verify the specific drive before buying.

Check compatibility before shopping
An M.2 drive is not automatically compatible just because it fits a slot. M.2 describes a physical form factor; the drive and host also need to support the same storage interface. A fast NVMe SSD is not a drop-in replacement for a system that only supports a 2.5-inch SATA drive.
#1 Best Overall
- HUGE SPEED BOOST: Get random read/write speeds that are 40%/55% faster than 980 PRO; Experience up to 1400K/1550K IOPS, while sequential read/write speeds up to 7,450/6,900 MB/s reach near the max performance of PCIe 4.0*
- BREAKTHROUGH POWER EFFICIENCY: Use less power and get more performance; Enjoy up to 50% improved performance per watt over 980 PRO, plus optimal power efficiency with max PCIe 4.0 performance**
- SMART THERMAL CONTROL: Samsung's own nickel-coated controller delivers effective thermal control; With its slim size, 990 PRO is a perfect fit for desktops and laptops that meet the PCI-SIG D8 standard***
- THE CHAMPION MAKER: Up to 65% improvement in random performance enables faster loads for an ultimate gaming experience on PS5 and DirectStorage PC games****
- SAMSUNG MAGICIAN SOFTWARE: Get the most out of your SSD with Samsung Magician's advanced yet intuitive optimization tools; Monitor drive health, protect valuable data, and receive important updates for your 990 PRO
- Look up your desktop motherboard or laptop model in its manual or manufacturer specifications.
- Confirm whether the system supports NVMe, SATA, or both, and which PCIe generation the M.2 slot supports.
- Check the required M.2 length and whether the slot has enough clearance for a single- or double-sided drive and any heatsink.
- For a laptop or compact PC, confirm the exact drive dimensions and thermal constraints against the device documentation. General buying-guide recommendations do not establish compatibility with every model.
A newer PCIe generation can operate at a lower supported generation in compatible configurations, but confirm the host and drive specifications rather than assuming a fit. If your system only accepts SATA, a PCIe NVMe drive will not solve the compatibility problem.
PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0?
| Drive type | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| PCIe 4.0 NVMe | Most current compatible PCs, including gaming and everyday use | A strong balance of speed and price; compare capacity, sustained behavior, warranty, and exact SKU. |
| PCIe 5.0 NVMe | Compatible systems used for demanding transfers or other high-throughput work | Higher peak throughput can come with a substantial price premium. Check cooling, power, and physical clearance. |
| 2.5-inch SATA SSD | Older PCs that do not support NVMe and systems with a SATA drive bay | Useful where SATA is required; prioritize suitable capacity and price rather than NVMe-class speed claims. |
For ordinary desktop tasks, Tom’s Hardware says users may not notice a difference between PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 4.0, much less PCIe 5.0. That makes a premium-generation drive difficult to justify for everyday responsiveness or gaming alone. PCIe 5.0 is most compelling when the system and workload can make use of its throughput.

Recommended drives and what their ratings mean
Samsung 990 Pro: mainstream PCIe 4.0 pick
Tom’s Hardware names the Samsung 990 Pro its best overall and gaming SSD, citing ratings of up to 7,450 MB/s sequential reads and 6,900 MB/s sequential writes. These are the guide’s cited drive ratings, not a guarantee of the speed you will see in every PC or workload. Check the exact capacity, interface, and current listing.
WD Black SN7100: another PCIe 4.0 option
PCWorld identifies the WD Black SN7100 as a mainstream PCIe 4.0 choice and reports a five-year limited warranty and 600 TBW per TB. Confirm the manufacturer’s current warranty and endurance terms for the exact capacity and SKU you are considering.

PCIe 5.0 examples for high-throughput systems
Tom’s Hardware names the Corsair MP700 Pro XT its fastest SSD pick and describes the Crucial T705 and Sabrent Rocket 5 as reaching up to 14.5 GB/s sequential throughput. PCWorld names the Teamgroup Z540 as its PCIe 5.0 pick. These are the publications’ category recommendations, not an independent ranking here. Check model-specific reviews and system cooling before choosing a high-throughput drive.
Choose capacity for your actual use
Tom’s Hardware calls 2TB a current capacity sweet spot and notes that modern AAA games can exceed 100GB. That is editorial guidance, not a universal minimum: the appropriate size depends on how many games, applications, and files you keep installed and how much room you want for future use.

- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
- Estimate the space used by your operating system, applications, games, and active project files.
- Compare the current price of drives at the capacities you would genuinely use.
- For large creative or professional files, consider whether you need more capacity and sustained write performance, not only a high peak read speed.
Compare performance, endurance, and thermals
Match performance to the workload
Sequential speed describes large, continuous transfers. It matters more when you regularly move large files than when you browse, launch everyday applications, or play games. For long writes, look for model-specific information about sustained speeds and cache behavior; a peak specification alone does not describe performance throughout a large transfer.
Check endurance and warranty by capacity
Compare the TBW rating and limited warranty for the precise capacity and product variant. Do not assume every capacity in a drive family has identical terms, and verify current manufacturer documentation before purchase.

Account for heat and power
PCIe 5.0 drives and tightly packed laptops or compact PCs deserve particular attention to thermals and clearance. There is no universal thermal ranking established here, so use model-specific reviews and confirm that the host has room for the drive and any required heatsink.
Check live prices and exact model names
Storage prices, stock, and product naming move over time. PCWorld warns that listed prices may become outdated amid rising storage prices. Compare live listings for the same capacity and exact model, and check whether the price is current for your region. Do not compare a discounted listing for one capacity with the price of a different variant and treat them as equivalent.
