Best SquirrelDisk Alternatives for Windows, macOS, and Linux

Find the right SquirrelDisk alternative for your operating system, from Windows NTFS scanners to GNOME storage charts and Mac treemap tools.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best SquirrelDisk alternative depends on your operating system and how you want to inspect storage. Windows users can choose WizTree for its direct NTFS scan approach or WinDirStat for a free, open-source treemap. GNOME Linux users can use Disk Usage Analyzer (Baobab) for local and remote scans. Mac users can compare paid DaisyDisk with free, open-source GrandPerspective. If you want one tool across desktop platforms, SquirrelDisk itself remains an option.

How to choose an alternative for finding what is using your space

Start with the computer you need to scan: some options here are platform-specific. Then consider how you want results displayed, whether remote or cloud storage matters, and whether you need cleanup controls as well as a visual breakdown.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Operating system: WizTree and WinDirStat are Windows tools; Baobab is presented for GNOME/Linux; DaisyDisk and GrandPerspective are Mac options in SquirrelDisk’s comparison. SquirrelDisk lists builds for macOS, Windows 10/11, and Linux x86_64.
  • Scan method: WizTree says it reads the NTFS Master File Table directly. That is a specific NTFS method, not proof of a cross-platform speed advantage.
  • Visual style: Choose a radial or ring chart if you prefer nested visual summaries, or a treemap if you want to compare areas by relative size.
  • Remote access: Baobab documents remote-folder scans; SquirrelDisk documents SSH and cloud scanning through rclone. Do not assume the other tools offer the same workflows.
  • Cleanup: A large-file chart identifies space usage, not whether a file is safe to remove. Check what a file does before deleting it.

The product descriptions cited here do not provide controlled, same-computer benchmark results, so they do not support a precise speed ranking across these applications.

Which SquirrelDisk alternative fits each operating system?

Tool Best fit Platform scope in cited sources Key distinction Important caveat
SquirrelDisk People who want one visual tool across desktop operating systems macOS (Apple silicon and Intel), Windows 10/11, Linux x86_64, per its download page Sunburst or treemap, interactive cleanup, SSH and rclone-based cloud scanning Its macOS build is outside the App Store and not code-signed; first launch can require an extra approval step.
WizTree Windows users focused on NTFS scans and finding large files Windows; its official documentation covers NTFS and other Windows-supported drives Direct NTFS Master File Table reading, treemap, largest-file list, and duplicate-file detection The stated MFT method applies to NTFS scanning; it is not a cross-platform replacement.
WinDirStat Windows users who want a free, open-source treemap analyzer Windows Interactive treemap; its project repository also describes large-file discovery, duplicate detection, and file-system monitoring Use the project’s authorized channels; its repository warns about impersonation sites.
Disk Usage Analyzer (Baobab) GNOME Linux users who want a graphical view of storage GNOME/Linux context in the cited sources Ring chart or treemap; can scan folders, storage devices, and remote locations GNOME notes remote scans may be slower than local scans. The cited sources do not establish Windows or macOS support.
DaisyDisk Mac users who prefer a paid visual analyzer macOS, according to SquirrelDisk’s comparison Sunburst visualization; that comparison reports Mac-specific snapshot and System Data features Feature and price details here come from SquirrelDisk’s comparison, not an independently opened DaisyDisk source. Check the vendor’s current requirements and store listing.
GrandPerspective Mac users who want an open-source treemap option macOS, according to SquirrelDisk’s comparison Free, open-source treemap alternative The reviewed source provides fewer current details; confirm compatibility and distribution with the project.

Windows: WizTree or WinDirStat?

WizTree for NTFS-focused large-file discovery

WizTree’s distinguishing claim is its scan method: it reads the NTFS Master File Table directly. It also provides a treemap, a largest-file list, and duplicate-file detection. That makes it a focused choice when you want to locate what is consuming space on Windows NTFS storage. Its MFT approach should not be generalized to other file systems, and the available product descriptions are not a controlled speed comparison.

WinDirStat for a free, open-source treemap

WinDirStat is the straightforward fit if you want a Windows treemap analyzer with an open-source project. The project describes large-file discovery, duplicate detection, and file-system monitoring. It also cautions users not to remove files needed for correct PC operation. Download it through the project’s authorized channels because the repository warns that impersonation sites exist.

Linux: what does Baobab offer?

GNOME’s Disk Usage Analyzer, also known as Baobab, can scan a local folder, the file system, a home folder, or a remote folder. Results can be shown as a ring chart or a treemap, making it useful for understanding which parts of a Linux storage hierarchy are largest. GNOME notes that remote scans may be slower than local scans.

macOS: DaisyDisk or GrandPerspective?

DaisyDisk for a paid visual analyzer

SquirrelDisk’s comparison characterizes DaisyDisk as a macOS sunburst analyzer and reports snapshot and System Data features. The same comparison, checked on 28 September 2026, lists a $9.99 one-time price for up to five personal Macs and macOS 10.13 or newer. Those are time-sensitive details reported by SquirrelDisk rather than independently verified DaisyDisk store information; confirm current compatibility, features, and regional pricing with DaisyDisk before buying.

GrandPerspective for an open-source treemap

When SquirrelDisk itself may still be the better fit

SquirrelDisk’s project describes the application as free and open source under AGPL-3.0. Its download page lists version 2.5.0, released 30 September 2026, for macOS, Windows 10/11, and Linux x86_64. It offers sunburst and treemap views, and documents scans of reachable machines over SSH and supported cloud storage through rclone.

Rank #4
Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0, 1-Year Rescue
  • Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

The project describes safeguards and accounting rules that matter if you plan to clean up from the app: it protects system folders, the home folder, whole drives, and other essential locations from collection; app and settings folders prompt for additional confirmation. Users choose whether selected items go to Trash, are permanently deleted, securely erased, or backed up first. SquirrelDisk also says cloud-only files count as zero local disk usage and linked folders are counted once. These are the vendor’s stated behaviors, not independent test findings. If you back up items before deletion, the documented workflow can send them to a folder or external drive; an external SSD is one possible destination, not a requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installation has a platform-specific wrinkle. The project says its Windows installer is per-user and also offers a portable executable; its Windows build is not code-signed and may display “Windows protected your PC.” On macOS, its app is distributed outside the App Store, and first launch can require approval in Privacy & Security.

How to use storage charts safely

  • Use the visualization to identify unusually large folders and files, then inspect their purpose and location before acting.
  • Do not assume a large system or application file is expendable. WinDirStat’s project specifically warns against removing files needed for correct PC operation.
  • Prefer a backup before deleting anything whose purpose you do not understand. SquirrelDisk documents a backup-before-delete choice, but cleanup decisions remain the user’s responsibility.
