Squarespace remains polished, but its 2026 price changes and conflicting published figures make a direct check essential before you renew.
The right alternative depends less on a single “best” platform than on four trade-offs: recurring cost (including renewal rates), visual and code control, commerce capability, and how much technical administration you want to own.

Quick picks for the most common Squarespace switches
| Need | Best fit | Why it fits | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free all-in-one starting point | Wix | Permanent free plan with platform ads, plus hosted templates, pages and commerce upgrades. | The free address and ads are not appropriate for a finished business site; paid prices vary by location. |
| Maximum visual and code control | Webflow | More granular layout and styling control than template-first builders, with a $15 yearly-billed Basic site plan. | Workspace seats are separate, and the interface has a steeper learning curve. |
| Animated, modern brochure site | Framer | Quick design-to-site workflow, free publishing on a Framer address, and built-in motion capabilities. | Editors cost extra, and older pricing references to a $100 Scale plan may no longer apply. |
| Online store first | Shopify | Commerce is the core product rather than an add-on to a design platform. | Current prices in the available 2026 listings are not verified against the official pricing page. |
| Plugin ecosystem and ownership | WordPress | WordPress.com offers hosted plans; self-hosted WordPress.org can be extended with plugins and custom code. | You must choose between hosted limitations and managing hosting, updates, security and backups yourself. |
If your only goal is paying less, compare the complete first-year and renewal cost rather than the largest introductory number. Multi-year promotions, annual billing, regional taxes and add-ons can reverse the apparent ranking.
What changed with Squarespace pricing in 2026
Published 2026 figures do not agree. One roundup lists annual-billed plans at Basic $16, Core $23, Plus $39 and Advanced $99 per month. A September 17, 2026 report says a July increase moved Basic from $16 to $19, Core from $23 to $29 and Plus from $39 to $49, while Advanced stayed at $99. Another September 25 listing shows Basic at $12, Core at $17 and Advanced at $25 on annual billing, but that publisher was not confirmed in the search results.

Those discrepancies may reflect different countries, billing dates, promotional periods or plan definitions. Treat every figure as a lead, not a quote. Check the current regional offer at squarespace.com/pricing, select monthly and annual billing, and record the renewal amount before comparing an alternative.
The practical implication is straightforward: calculate the price of the features you actually use—custom domain, commerce, contributors, storage, analytics and any paid extensions—then compare that total with the alternative’s renewal price. A lower entry tier that omits a required feature is not cheaper in practice.
Wix: the easiest all-in-one alternative with a free tier
Wix is the clearest replacement when you like Squarespace’s hosted convenience but want to start without a subscription. Its free plan is permanent, but it displays Wix advertising and uses a Wix address. A custom domain and a professional, ad-free presentation require a paid plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| Plan | Reported price | Billing qualification | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Ads and Wix address | Prototype, personal experiment or temporary landing page |
| Light | $17/month | Annual billing; monthly billing can be up to 41% higher | Basic custom-domain site |
| Core | $29/month | Annual billing | Site that needs additional business features or basic selling |
| Business | $39/month | Annual billing | More substantial store and business requirements |
| Business Elite | $159/month | Annual billing | High-end business requirements and larger allowances |
These figures are reported for 2026 and vary by location. Confirm the offer shown for your country at wix.com/plans before committing. Wix Studio is a separate designer-and-agency product, with reported prices from $19 to $159 per month; do not assume a Wix Studio quote applies to the regular Wix editor.
When Wix is the better choice
- You need a hosted editor, templates, forms and basic marketing tools in one account.
- You want to test a concept at no cost before connecting a domain.
- You prefer visual freedom beyond a rigid template, but do not want to manage a server.
Where Wix is weaker
The free plan is unsuitable for a polished brand because of ads and the platform address. Annual prices are not universal, and monthly billing can materially increase the total. Before moving, list every Squarespace feature you rely on—commerce, member areas, scheduling, email campaigns and third-party integrations—and verify its Wix equivalent at the tier you can afford.

Webflow: the strongest Squarespace alternative for design control
Webflow is aimed at people who want to design a responsive site with fine control over structure, layout and styling instead of accepting a template’s boundaries. It is the closest fit when “flexible” means controlling the output at the HTML/CSS level while still using a visual interface.
Site-plan prices reported by Webflow
| Plan | Price | Billing | Important note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $15/month | Billed yearly | Webflow’s May 2026 help-center update |
| Basic | $25/month | Billed monthly | Same plan, higher monthly rate |
| Premium | $25/month | Billed yearly | CMS and Business site plans were merged into Premium |
Workspace seats are billed separately from site plans. Third-party listings put seats at roughly $16–$19 per seat per month, so treat that range as indicative rather than an official quote. A solo site can therefore cost less than a multi-person production workflow even when both publish the same number of sites.
Choose Webflow when
- You need precise responsive breakpoints, reusable classes, interactions or custom layout behavior.
- A designer and developer need to work in the same visual system.
- You are prepared to learn a more technical interface and plan content structures carefully.
Budget and workflow cautions
Separate the site-plan cost from workspace seats, domains and any external services. Decide who needs a paid seat before inviting collaborators. Build a small representative page first—navigation, a CMS collection if required, a form and mobile layouts—then confirm that the editor and publishing workflow suit the whole team.
Framer: fast, animated sites without a heavy setup
Framer suits portfolios, launch pages and modern marketing sites where motion and visual polish matter more than a large editorial backend. You can publish on a Framer address for free, making it useful for prototypes and early client review.
Reported Framer pricing
| Plan | Annual-billing price | Monthly-billing price | Use case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | Framer address and early prototype |
| Basic | $10/month | $15/month | Small custom-domain site |
| Pro | $30/month | $45/month | Larger or more demanding site |
Extra editors add cost. One 2026 listing reports $20 per additional editor and $10 for content editors; confirm which editor role and billing rules apply to your account. An older source lists a $100/month Scale plan, while newer references say that plan was removed, so do not budget around it without seeing it in the current account interface.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Framer’s trade-off
Framer is quicker to make an attractive animated page than a general-purpose content system, but assess your long-term content needs before moving a large publication or catalog. Count the number of editors, required integrations and recurring updates. A free prototype can reveal whether the animation, accessibility and mobile behavior meet your standards before you pay.
Shopify: choose it when selling outranks visual design
Shopify is positioned as the stronger option when the website’s primary job is taking orders, managing products and running a store. Its design system can be customized, but the decision should start with catalog, checkout, inventory, payment and fulfillment requirements rather than a page-builder comparison.
2026 secondary listings report $29/month with annual billing and $39/month for monthly billing, but those figures were not verified against Shopify’s official pricing page. Confirm the current regional plan, transaction terms, payment requirements and app costs before migrating.
Shopify is a good fit if
- Your store has enough products, orders or operational complexity that commerce tooling is the main constraint.
- You need a workflow centered on inventory, checkout and fulfillment rather than bespoke editorial layouts.
- You can budget for paid apps when a required function is not included in the base plan.
Do not switch solely for a lower headline price
Compare the complete store stack: subscription, payment processing, domain, theme, apps, shipping tools and staff access. Export products, variants, customer consent records and orders from Squarespace before changing DNS, and keep the old site available until checkout and redirects have been tested.
WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress.org: flexibility with different levels of responsibility
WordPress.com: hosted convenience
Secondary 2026 listings report WordPress.com plans from $4 per month, Personal at $9 and Commerce at $70, but the source and current regional terms were not confirmed. Verify the plan matrix directly on WordPress.com. Hosted WordPress.com reduces server administration, while the exact plugins, themes, storage and commerce features depend on the plan you select.

WordPress.org: maximum extensibility, maximum ownership
Self-hosted WordPress.org is software rather than a bundled website subscription. You select a hosting provider, install WordPress, choose themes and plugins, and maintain updates, backups, security, performance and email deliverability. There is no single meaningful monthly price without specifying those services.
Choose self-hosting when you need a plugin or custom code that hosted builders cannot provide and you have someone responsible for maintenance. Choose a hosted plan when reducing operational work matters more than unrestricted configuration. In either case, document the active plugins, license renewals, administrator accounts and backup location before migration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Design-control comparison
| Platform | Visual freedom | Code or structure control | Best content shape | Administration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wix | High within a hosted editor | Customizations available, but platform boundaries remain | Business sites, portfolios and smaller stores | Low |
| Webflow | Very high | Strongest HTML/CSS-style control among the listed hosted builders | Custom marketing sites and structured content | Low to medium |
| Framer | Very high for modern layouts and motion | Visual-first; evaluate advanced content and integration requirements | Launch pages, portfolios and animated brochures | Low |
| Shopify | Theme- and commerce-oriented | Extensible, but checkout and store architecture impose constraints | Product catalogs and stores | Low to medium |
| WordPress.com | Depends on plan, theme and available extensions | More extensible on higher tiers | Blogs, publications and mixed-content sites | Low to medium |
| WordPress.org | Limited mainly by your theme and skills | Full plugin, database and code access | Sites needing unusual workflows or integrations | High |
“Design control” has two meanings. Webflow and Framer let you shape the front end in detail. WordPress gives you broader ownership of the underlying system, but you must supply the maintenance. Wix offers a middle path for people who want more layout freedom without running infrastructure.
How to migrate from Squarespace without losing traffic or content
- Inventory the existing site. Export or record every URL, page title, heading, image, downloadable file, form, product, customer list and integration. Mark pages that receive traffic or external links.
- Choose the destination by workload. Select Wix for hosted simplicity, Webflow or Framer for design-led work, Shopify for commerce, or WordPress for extensibility. Confirm the required feature exists on the paid tier you will renew.
- Build on a temporary address. Keep the Squarespace site live while recreating navigation, templates, forms, metadata, analytics and accessibility settings. Test desktop, tablet and mobile layouts.
- Map URLs one by one. Preserve slugs where practical. Create a redirect map from every changed URL to its closest replacement; do not send all old pages to the home page.
- Test forms and transactions. Submit contact forms, newsletter sign-ups and test orders. Check confirmation emails, payment status, taxes, shipping, inventory and staff notifications.
- Lower DNS risk. Record current DNS records, especially email-related records. Follow the destination platform’s connection instructions and avoid deleting mail records while changing the website.
- Connect the domain and monitor. Change DNS only after the replacement is ready, then check HTTPS, canonical URLs, robots settings, analytics and redirects. Keep the old subscription active until the new site is stable.
- Close the old service deliberately. Export any remaining data, cancel only after the retention period you need, and document the new platform’s renewal date, owners and backup process.
Compare the real cost, not the advertised starting number
Use a three-year worksheet with one column for each platform. Enter the first billing term, renewal rate, domain, required commerce tier, extra editors or seats, transaction fees, paid apps, email service, migration labor and tax. Mark whether each figure is monthly or annual billing and whether it is promotional.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Annual versus monthly: annual billing often lowers the displayed monthly equivalent, while monthly billing preserves flexibility.
- Renewal: introductory rates can expire; record the post-promotion amount before you publish a budget.
- Seats: Webflow and Framer can add meaningful costs when several people edit or publish.
- Regional pricing: Wix and other hosted services can show different currencies, taxes and features by country.
- Exit cost: include the time to export content and rebuild integrations if the platform no longer fits.
A platform is financially cheaper only when it delivers the required features at the renewal price with an acceptable maintenance burden.
Best Value
Common failure modes and fixes
The “free” site is not publishable
Free tiers commonly use a platform subdomain and advertising. Use them for prototypes, stakeholder approval or a personal experiment; upgrade before a business launch.
The cheap annual plan lacks one critical feature
Check custom domains, forms, CMS limits, product counts, contributor roles, analytics and redirects before paying. Move up a tier in the worksheet rather than comparing entry plans that are not equivalent.
A redesign breaks search traffic
Keep the URL inventory, preserve high-value slugs, implement individual redirects and verify that staging pages are not accidentally blocked or indexed incorrectly. Monitor error reports after the DNS switch.
Recommended Free Tools
The team cannot publish efficiently
Count required seats and editor roles before inviting everyone. On systems with separate workspace billing, a low site price can become expensive for a larger team.
WordPress maintenance is neglected
Assign an owner for core, theme and plugin updates; automate backups; test restores; use least-privilege accounts; and schedule security reviews. If no one can do this, a hosted builder may be the safer choice.
A practical decision rule
- Pick Wix when you want the closest all-in-one experience and a free starting point.
- Pick Webflow when precise layout, responsive behavior and structured design systems justify a steeper learning curve.
- Pick Framer when a small, highly visual and animated site is the priority.
- Pick Shopify when products, checkout and fulfillment matter more than page-builder freedom.
- Pick WordPress.com when you want hosted WordPress, or WordPress.org when you need full control and can operate the stack.
- Stay with Squarespace if its templates and workflow already meet your needs after you verify the current regional price; switching has a migration cost that a small saving may not repay.
Make the final choice only after a one-page prototype, a feature check at the intended paid tier and a renewal-cost calculation. That process exposes the difference between a genuinely flexible website and a cheaper plan that creates new constraints.
