For the highest-resolution streaming, choose TIDAL; for hi-res listening plus permanent downloads and human-written editorial, choose Qobuz. Apple Music is the easiest fit for people already using Apple hardware and services, while Spotify itself is no longer automatically disqualified: Premium lossless began rolling out in 2025 and is available in more than 50 markets. Amazon Music may suit an Amazon or Alexa household, but its current lossless specifications and pricing need to be checked for your country before you subscribe.
The right choice depends on more than a “lossless” badge. Maximum resolution, catalog availability, discovery tools, immersive formats, offline behavior, family terms, playlist transfer and your playback hardware all affect what you will actually hear and use.

Lossless audio uses a codec that preserves the encoded recording data instead of discarding information to reduce file size. FLAC is the lossless format named by Spotify and TIDAL. A 16-bit/44.1 kHz stream corresponds to CD-quality resolution; 24-bit files carry more amplitude detail and higher sample rates can represent frequencies beyond the CD sampling rate. A higher number does not automatically mean a better master, however. The recording, mastering and your listening chain still determine the audible result.

Streaming quality also changes when a service cannot supply its preferred source. TIDAL describes a source hierarchy of HiRes FLAC first, then FLAC, then AAC when a higher-quality source is unavailable. That means a “Max” setting is a ceiling, not a guarantee that every song is delivered at 24-bit/192 kHz.
Why the connection and headphones matter
Bluetooth normally compresses audio before it reaches wireless headphones. Spotify therefore recommends wired headphones or speakers for the smoothest lossless experience. TIDAL recommends wired or Wi‑Fi playback and checking that your digital-to-analog converter (DAC) supports lossless 24-bit/192 kHz when you want its highest tier. A capable DAC cannot restore information removed by Bluetooth or by a lossy source.
Spotify is now a lossless option
Spotify Premium began rolling out lossless on September 10, 2025, in selected markets. Spotify says Premium can stream up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, with support across mobile, desktop and tablet applications and many Spotify Connect devices. An October 6, 2025 update said the feature had reached Premium users in more than 50 markets.
Recommended Free Tools
Availability is attached to the account’s market, so a Premium subscriber in one country may see the lossless control before a subscriber elsewhere. The app’s audio-quality setting is the practical check: if Lossless is offered for your account and device, select it and allow downloads to be rebuilt at that quality. Wi‑Fi is preferable for uninterrupted high-bitrate playback.
When staying with Spotify makes sense
- Your playlists, follows, recommendations and listening history are more valuable than changing services.
- Your market has received the lossless rollout and 24-bit/44.1 kHz is sufficient for your system.
- You depend on Spotify Connect and do not want to rebuild device integrations.
- You primarily listen on Bluetooth, where the wireless link will limit the benefit of a lossless source anyway.
TIDAL: best for maximum streaming resolution and immersive formats
TIDAL’s two relevant quality levels are High, up to 16-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, and Max, up to 24-bit/192 kHz HiRes FLAC. The service says it has more than 180 million songs in HiFi sound quality. Its own description is that HiRes FLAC can recreate the sound quality artists and producers hear through suitable speakers, but the actual source can fall back to FLAC or AAC when a higher-quality file is unavailable.
Features that distinguish TIDAL
- Dolby Atmos tracks for compatible devices and listening systems.
- Ad-free offline listening for subscribers.
- Personalized mixes and discovery features.
- DJ access and family and student plans.
- Playlist importing, useful when moving from another service.
The official U.S. pricing page lists $11.99 per month for an individual plan and $19.99 per month for a family plan, with a 30-day trial. Regional prices, taxes, plan names and trial eligibility can differ, so confirm the checkout page in your country.
Who should choose TIDAL
Pick TIDAL when 24-bit/192 kHz availability, Dolby Atmos, offline files and DJ-oriented access matter more than a permanent download library. It is also the most direct choice for someone who wants to import existing playlists rather than start from an empty account. Buy a DAC only if your phone, computer or streamer cannot already decode and output the format you intend to use; the DAC’s supported resolution should match the files, and wired or Wi‑Fi playback avoids Bluetooth’s compression.

Qobuz: best for hi-res depth, editorial context and ownership
Qobuz advertises more than 100 million tracks and 24-bit hi-res streaming in all of its applications. Its independent, artist-first identity is expressed through human-written recommendations and reviews rather than an algorithm-only feed. That editorial layer is valuable if you want context around a record, connections between artists and guidance beyond whatever is currently popular.

The download store changes the ownership question
Qobuz also sells albums for permanent download in lossless CD quality or hi-res formats. A purchased file remains yours to keep and play independently of an active streaming subscription. This is different from an offline cache: an offline stream is tied to the service and account, while a purchased album is an ordinary file you can archive and back up.
The opened U.S. page lists $12.99 per month or $129.99 for 12 months, equivalent to $10.83 per month when the annual payment is spread across the year. The annual figure is a one-time 12-month charge, not a monthly billing amount. Check local currency, taxes and any current trial terms before paying.
Who should choose Qobuz
- You want hi-res playback in every Qobuz application rather than a limited device mode.
- You value human-curated reviews and recommendations.
- You plan to buy favorite albums permanently as lossless or hi-res files.
- You are comfortable managing a separate music library and backups for purchased downloads.
Apple Music: the integrated choice for Apple households
Apple Music advertises lossless audio that preserves the detail of original recordings, along with Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos. The service is ad-free and combines personalized recommendations with artist interviews and performances. Collaborative playlists make it convenient for groups, and family sharing covers up to five other people under the stated family arrangement.
The product page reviewed for this comparison emphasizes trials and plan types but does not display a current monthly price. Because Apple prices and plan availability vary by country, use the subscription screen for your Apple ID region rather than relying on a price from another market.
Where Apple Music fits best
Choose it when your household already uses Apple devices, family sharing or Apple media apps and you want lossless and Dolby Atmos without adding another ecosystem. Check the playback path carefully: a lossless setting in the app does not make a Bluetooth link lossless, and compatible wired equipment is needed to hear the source without that wireless compression.
Amazon Music: an ecosystem option that needs verification
Amazon’s official homepage confirms free music and podcast listening, artist and album discovery and playlists. It presents a broad current catalog and is a natural place to look if your household is organized around Amazon accounts, Echo speakers or Alexa voice control.
The page reviewed does not expose a current lossless-format specification or subscription price. Do not assume a particular bit depth, sample rate or plan entitlement from the service name alone. Before switching for sound quality, open the offer for your country and verify the codec, maximum resolution, offline rules and whether your devices support the advertised mode.

Maximum resolution and codec
TIDAL has the highest stated ceiling in this group at 24-bit/192 kHz HiRes FLAC. Qobuz confirms 24-bit hi-res streaming but does not state one maximum in the supplied product information. Spotify’s ceiling is 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. Apple Music confirms lossless and Dolby Atmos without a single universal maximum on the page reviewed. Amazon Music’s current lossless specification was not shown on that page and therefore requires a regional check.

Catalog and discovery
TIDAL states more than 180 million songs in HiFi sound quality, while Qobuz states more than 100 million tracks. Those figures are service-published catalog counts, not an independent overlap audit, and catalog availability can vary by country and licensing agreement. Spotify’s advantage is continuity: your existing playlists and recommendation history remain in place. Apple Music emphasizes personalized discovery and artist content; Qobuz adds human-written editorial; TIDAL combines personalized mixes with an artist-first presentation.
Offline listening versus owning files
TIDAL and Spotify support offline listening as part of their subscription experiences, and Apple Music advertises offline use through its plans. Offline tracks are encrypted or account-controlled service copies. Qobuz is the only service in this comparison whose supplied information explicitly includes a store for permanent lossless and hi-res album purchases. If ownership is a requirement, distinguish a download-store purchase from a temporary offline cache before subscribing.
Immersive audio
TIDAL and Apple Music advertise Dolby Atmos. A compatible album, application, device and playback chain are all required; ordinary stereo headphones will not reproduce an Atmos speaker layout, although some devices can render a binaural version. The presence of Atmos does not replace the need to check whether the specific album has an Atmos mix.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you keep your Spotify playlists?
Your Spotify playlists remain in your Spotify account if you keep the account active. Moving to another service is different: playlist transfer depends on the destination’s import function and on whether tracks are matched in its regional catalog.
A reliable migration workflow
- Audit first. Export or list your most important playlists, including local files, podcasts and collaborative lists. Note songs that are alternate versions, remixes or live recordings because automatic matching can select a different release.
- Use the destination’s importer. TIDAL explicitly lists playlist importing. For any other service, look for an import option in the account or playlist menu and read which source services and list types it accepts.
- Review every match. Compare artist, album, version, duration and explicit-content status. Replace incorrectly matched tracks manually.
- Preserve organization. Recreate folders, playlist order and collaborative permissions where the destination supports them. Keep Spotify until the new library has been checked.
- Test offline playback. Download a representative playlist, enable airplane mode and confirm that the expected files and artwork are available before cancelling the old subscription.
No importer can guarantee that every song, regional edition or personal local file will transfer. A short overlap between subscriptions is the safest way to catch missing matches.
Hardware and settings checklist for audible lossless playback
- Source setting: Select Lossless, High or Max in the service’s audio-quality menu rather than leaving an automatic setting that may reduce quality to save data.
- Network: Use Wi‑Fi for high-resolution streams and downloads. Cellular playback can consume substantially more data and may buffer when coverage changes.
- Output: Use a wired headphone or speaker connection when you want the source signal to remain uncompressed. Wi‑Fi playback is also recommended by TIDAL for compatible devices.
- DAC: For TIDAL Max, verify that the DAC accepts lossless 24-bit/192 kHz. A device that tops out below the stream’s resolution will resample or reduce it.
- App and endpoint: Update the mobile, desktop or tablet application and check that the receiver, streamer or Spotify Connect endpoint supports the selected mode.
- Storage: High-resolution offline files need more space than compressed downloads. Leave room for cached artwork and multiple playlists.
- Listening test: Compare the same master at a matched volume. Louder playback can seem better even when the files are otherwise identical.
Common problems and fixes
The lossless option is missing
Confirm that your account is in a supported market, that the subscription tier includes the feature and that the application is current. Spotify’s rollout is market-specific, and Amazon Music’s lossless details must be verified locally. Some devices expose fewer quality controls than the phone or desktop application.
The app says lossless but wireless headphones sound unchanged
The stream can be lossless while the Bluetooth link is not. Switch to a wired connection or a compatible Wi‑Fi endpoint. Also check that the device has not enabled a system-wide Bluetooth codec or battery-saving mode that changes the output.

A hi-res track plays at a lower rate
Services can fall back when a hi-res source is unavailable, and operating-system audio mixers may resample output. TIDAL’s documented order is HiRes FLAC, then FLAC, then AAC. Check the track’s quality indicator, the app’s exclusive or direct-output options where available, and the DAC’s supported rate.
Transferred playlists contain wrong songs
Search for alternate mixes, remasters, clean versions and regional releases. Compare album artwork and duration, then replace mismatches manually. Keep the original Spotify lists until the audit is complete.
A decision guide by listener type
Choose TIDAL if resolution is your first priority
Its 24-bit/192 kHz HiRes FLAC ceiling, Dolby Atmos, offline mode, DJ access and playlist importing make it the most feature-complete choice for a listener with suitable wired or Wi‑Fi hardware.
Choose Qobuz if you want a streaming library and a personal archive
Its more-than-100-million-track catalog, human editorial and permanent download store suit listeners who want to discover albums and then buy the files they intend to keep.
Choose Apple Music if your household is already in Apple’s ecosystem
Lossless, Spatial Audio, ad-free listening, collaborative playlists and family sharing reduce the friction of adding another service to Apple devices.
Stay with Spotify if continuity beats the highest specification
If Premium lossless is available in your market, 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC may meet your needs without sacrificing playlists, recommendations or Connect devices.
Check Amazon Music if Alexa integration is decisive
It is a sensible ecosystem candidate, but verify the current local codec, resolution, plan and offline terms before treating it as a lossless upgrade.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Bottom line
TIDAL is the strongest all-round Spotify replacement for listeners who want the highest stated streaming resolution and immersive features. Qobuz is the better long-term library for buyers who value human curation and permanent hi-res downloads. Apple Music wins on Apple-device integration and family features. Spotify Premium itself deserves consideration now that lossless has rolled out widely, while Amazon Music should be judged only after its current regional specifications are confirmed.
