Use Xbox Wireless to connect the Xbox Nano controller to an Xbox console. On a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, the documented wireless method is Bluetooth; compatible PCs can also use the Xbox Wireless setup in Windows. For charging, the controller has an internal rechargeable battery and needs a USB-C cable, which is sold separately.
Choose the right connection method
The host determines the pairing process. The Nano controller uses Xbox Wireless with Xbox consoles, while the official specification identifies Bluetooth as the wireless connection for Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, iOS, Android and compatible smart TVs.

Wireless pairing and charging are separate. The USB-C cable is an accessory for charging the internal battery; it is not listed as the radio connection for the Xbox or Windows procedures below.

- Turn on the Xbox console or start Windows before beginning the pairing sequence.
- Make sure the Nano controller has enough charge to stay on while pairing. Xbox specifies an internal rechargeable battery.
- For Bluetooth, confirm that Bluetooth is enabled in Windows before searching for the controller.
- Keep the controller close to the console or PC during setup. Microsoft specifically advises keeping a device powered on, nearby and in pairing mode when adding it manually.
- Identify the controller’s Pair button. The Xbox button is used to power the controller and provides the flashing or steady-light status described in the setup steps.
Connect the Nano controller to an Xbox console
Xbox-console connectivity uses Xbox Wireless. The console and controller must both enter their pairing states; turning on the controller alone does not complete the connection.

- Turn on the console. Wait until the Xbox is fully at its home screen or otherwise ready to accept a controller.
- Power on the controller. Press the controller’s Xbox button.
- Start pairing on the console. Press the Xbox console’s pair or sync control. The control’s exact placement varies by console model, so use the physical button marked for pairing on your console.
- Put the controller in pairing mode. Press and hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox button begins flashing.
- Wait for completion. When the Xbox button stops flashing and remains steady, pairing has completed. You can then use the controller on the console.
If the console does not finish pairing
Keep the controller close to the console and check that it is charged. Restart the sequence by pressing the console’s pair control again, then holding the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox button flashes. A flashing button means the controller is still searching; a steady light is the documented completed state.
Pair with a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC over Bluetooth
Bluetooth is the standard wireless PC procedure identified for the Nano controller. Microsoft’s instructions apply to Windows 10 Anniversary Update or later, which includes supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations.
- Turn on the controller. Press the Xbox button.
- Enter Bluetooth pairing mode. Hold the Pair button for three seconds. The Xbox button lights up and starts flashing.
- Open Windows Bluetooth settings. Select Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on. If the Bluetooth switch is off, enable it and wait for Windows to initialize the radio.
- Start adding a device. Select Add device, then choose Bluetooth when Windows asks which device type to add.
- Select the controller. Choose the Xbox controller shown in the device list. Keep the controller in pairing mode while Windows completes the connection.
- Confirm the result. The controller’s Xbox button remains lit when the connection is established.
What the three-second hold does
A brief press of Xbox powers the controller. Holding Pair for three seconds changes it to Bluetooth discovery mode, indicated by a flashing Xbox button. If the button is not flashing when you open Add device, hold Pair again for the full three seconds and search once more.

Connect to Windows using Xbox Wireless
Some Windows PCs support Xbox Wireless in addition to Bluetooth. Microsoft documents a separate Windows path for that radio. Use it only when the PC exposes Xbox Wireless support; otherwise, use Bluetooth.
- Turn on the controller. Press the Xbox button, then hold Xbox until its light flashes.
- Increase the pairing signal. Hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox button flashes more quickly.
- Open device setup in Windows. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device.
- Choose the device category. Select Everything else, not the ordinary Bluetooth category.
- Select the controller. Choose Xbox Wireless Controller from the results and wait for Windows to complete the connection.
The faster flashing pattern indicates the Xbox Wireless pairing state in this procedure. If Windows does not offer an Xbox Wireless result, return to the Bluetooth method or verify that the computer actually supports Xbox Wireless.
Bluetooth versus Xbox Wireless on Windows
| Consideration | Bluetooth | Xbox Wireless |
|---|---|---|
| Supported host | Windows 10/11 PC with Bluetooth | Windows PC with Xbox Wireless support |
| Controller setup | Hold Pair for three seconds until the Xbox button flashes | Hold Xbox until it flashes, then hold Pair until it flashes faster |
| Windows menu | Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth | Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Everything else |
| Completion indication | Xbox button remains lit | Windows reports the Xbox Wireless Controller as added |
| Charging | The controller’s internal battery is charged separately with a USB-C cable sold separately | |
For a typical Windows laptop or desktop with Bluetooth, the Bluetooth route has the clearest documented menu path. The Xbox Wireless route is useful when the PC provides that capability and Windows lists the controller under Everything else.

3. Reduce the distance
Place the controller close to the PC while Windows searches. Microsoft’s device-setup guidance calls for the device to be nearby, powered on and in pairing mode when it is added manually.
4. Add it manually again
Close the Add device window, put the controller into pairing mode again, and repeat the complete menu path. Starting a new search after the controller begins flashing is more reliable than leaving an expired search window open.

5. Check charge and retry
A controller that powers off cannot remain discoverable. Charge the internal battery with a USB-C cable, then repeat the pairing steps. Xbox states that the charging cable is sold separately, so make sure one is available before troubleshooting a low-power failure.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Charging the Xbox Nano controller
The Nano controller contains an internal rechargeable battery. Xbox specifies that charging requires a USB-C cable and that the cable is sold separately. The cable is therefore an essential accessory even though the controller pairs wirelessly.
Choosing a replacement cable
- Confirm that the controller-side connector is USB-C.
- Check that the listing explicitly supports charging rather than offering a cable intended only for a different connector or use.
- Choose a length that reaches your charging position without putting strain on the controller or console.
- Use the product description phrase “USB-C charging cable for Xbox Nano Controller” when searching, then verify the connector, charging capability and length in the listing.
Charging does not replace the pairing sequence: after the controller has enough power, follow the Xbox Wireless or Windows Bluetooth instructions for the host you want to use.
Quick decision guide
- Connecting to Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One: use the console’s pair control and the controller’s Pair button. The connection is Xbox Wireless.
- Connecting to a Windows 10/11 PC with Bluetooth: hold Pair for three seconds, then use Add device > Bluetooth.
- Connecting to a Windows PC that supports Xbox Wireless: hold Xbox until it flashes, hold Pair until it flashes faster, then use Add device > Everything else.
- Controller turns off during setup: charge its internal battery with a separately purchased USB-C cable and retry.
- Windows shows no controller: keep it close, powered on and flashing in the correct pairing mode, then repeat the manual Add device flow.
Compatibility covered by the official specification
The Xbox Nano Controller specification lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox on PC, Windows, Android and iOS compatibility. Its radio description distinguishes console and PC use: Xbox Wireless connects it to Xbox consoles, while Bluetooth provides wireless connections to Windows 10/11 PCs and the other listed mobile platforms.
