For a simple stereo upgrade, Roku Wireless Speakers are the most direct choice—but only if your television is a compatible Roku TV system. If you want a soundbar or receiver, choose one that matches your TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC or optical output, and verify any Roku TV Ready certification before buying. The right pick depends on your TV model and the setup you want; there is no single best speaker for every Roku TV.
Which speaker setup fits your Roku TV?
| Option | Best fit | Connection and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Roku Wireless Speakers | A compatible Roku TV owner seeking a direct stereo pair | Pair with specified Roku host devices. Each speaker needs power, and Wi-Fi is used for setup. The TV’s built-in speakers turn off when the speakers pair directly to a Roku TV. They do not work with non-Roku TVs or standalone Roku streaming players. Roku compatibility and setup guidance. |
| Roku TV Ready soundbar | A buyer who wants a wired soundbar integrated with Roku TV controls | Connect to the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port, and verify Roku TV Ready certification as well as ARC/eARC support on both devices. Roku TV Ready soundbar setup. |
| Other compatible soundbar or AVR | A buyer whose TV and audio device share an HDMI ARC or optical connection | Use HDMI ARC or optical as supported by both devices. Supported audio features vary by hardware. Roku surround-sound connection guidance. |
| Roku Wireless Bass or Bass Pro | An owner seeking bass in a supported Roku audio setup | Compatibility depends on the audio configuration. Neither can connect to a Roku TV while a Roku TV Ready soundbar is connected. Roku audio compatibility guidance. |

Are Roku Wireless Speakers compatible with your TV?
First check that the television itself runs the Roku TV system. A regular TV connected to a Roku streaming stick or player is not the same thing: Roku says its wireless speakers do not pair with other TVs or standalone streaming players.
Roku lists these wireless speaker varieties: Roku Wireless Speakers (9020R2), Roku TV Wireless Speakers (9030), and onn. Roku Wireless Surround Speakers (9040). Roku’s setup guidance names Roku TV, Streambar, Streambar Pro, and Smart Soundbar as possible hosts, with model-specific exceptions described in its compatibility guidance. A Roku TV can pair with up to two speakers; specified soundbar hosts can pair with up to four. With a Roku TV, the pair serves as stereo speakers, while supported Roku soundbars can use them as surround speakers. Check Roku’s speaker setup and pairing details.

Each speaker needs its own power outlet. Wi-Fi is used to find and pair speakers; Roku says they work up to 30 feet away with a good wireless signal. That is Roku’s stated setup guidance, not an independently measured range guarantee. Place them where power is available and the wireless signal is suitable.
There is an important configuration exception: speakers cannot pair directly to a Roku TV while a Streambar or Smart Soundbar is connected. In supported combinations, they may instead pair to the soundbar. Roku’s wireless surround combinations are model-specific, so check the exact TV and soundbar models before planning a surround setup. When should you choose a Roku TV Ready soundbar?
Choose this route if you want a wired soundbar designed to integrate with Roku TV setup and sound settings. Roku’s instructions connect the soundbar to the television with one HDMI cable, using the port labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC. The TV should detect the soundbar and begin on-screen setup. Confirm Roku TV Ready certification on the product packaging, manual, or manufacturer’s product page; do not assume that every soundbar with HDMI is certified.

Use the TV’s ARC/eARC-labeled port, not an arbitrary HDMI input. Roku says only that port supports the return communication needed for the integrated setup. See Roku’s Roku TV Ready soundbar instructions.

ARC versus eARC
For eARC benefits, both the TV and soundbar must support eARC. Roku specifies a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet for taking full advantage of eARC. An eARC soundbar connected to an ARC port, or an ARC soundbar connected to an eARC port, can use standard ARC functionality rather than eARC. Check both devices’ specifications before choosing a connection or cable.
When is another soundbar or an AV receiver a better fit?
A non-Roku soundbar or AV receiver can be a sensible choice when the TV and audio device share a supported connection and you do not require Roku TV Ready integration. Roku documents HDMI ARC and optical audio as connection paths for a soundbar or receiver; which one makes sense depends on the ports and audio features available on both devices. Roku’s connection guide covers ARC and optical setups.

- Add cinematic sound to your Roku TV or surround sound to your Roku audio system. Requires Roku TV, Roku Streambar, Roku Streambar Pro, or Roku Smart Soundbar—sold separately. Only works with Roku TV or Roku Audio. Roku Streambar SE is not compatible.
- Powerful, premium audio: With high frequencies and dynamic bass, Roku Wireless Speakers are meticulously engineered to deliver full, clear sound and crisp dialogue with seamless audio/video sync to your Roku TV or Roku Smart Soundbar
- Be immersed in your TV: Experience room-filling audio that moves with the action, conversations like you’re in the room, and soundscapes that transport you to another world—it's cinematic sound for your entertainment
- Elevate your music: Listen to your music come to life with clear highs and volume without distortion—simply tune into your favorite music channels or stream via Bluetooth
- Fine-tune your sound: Easily boost the volume of voices with Speech Clarity, lower loud commercials for consistent sound with Volume Leveling, and enjoy your TV without waking the house using Night Mode
- Choose HDMI ARC/eARC when both devices have the matching port and you want audio returned over HDMI.
- Choose optical when the TV and audio device both provide optical audio connections and the features you need are supported over that path.
- Check the TV and audio device manuals for supported formats and setup requirements; the connection options do not guarantee identical feature support across models.
For a Roku TV Ready setup that uses eARC, follow Roku’s specified cable requirement. For optical audio, use an optical cable only when the equipment supports that connection. If an included cable and the TV’s available ports meet the requirements, an extra cable may not be necessary.
Should you add surround speakers or a subwoofer?
Consider expansion only after confirming the exact host models. Roku describes advanced wireless surround combinations for particular Plus and Pro TV families and compatible audio hosts; the arrangements are not universal across Roku TVs. Roku Wireless Bass and Bass Pro are also limited to supported configurations. Neither can be connected to a Roku TV while a Roku TV Ready soundbar is connected. Check Roku’s compatibility guidance.

Quick Recap
Buying checklist
- Identify the host. Confirm whether you own a Roku TV system or a regular TV with a Roku player or stick. Wireless Roku speakers require a supported Roku host.
- Choose the goal. A direct stereo pair, integrated soundbar, receiver connection, and wireless surround setup have different compatibility requirements.
- Match the ports. Check the TV and audio device for HDMI ARC/eARC or optical. For eARC use, confirm both devices support it and follow Roku’s High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet guidance.
- Verify certification and models. For a Roku TV Ready soundbar, confirm certification and the relevant ARC/eARC support. For Roku wireless speakers, bass products, or surround combinations, check the exact model-specific compatibility details.
- Plan placement and power. Wireless speakers still need outlets. Check room placement, Wi-Fi conditions, and whether any required stands or mounts are included.
