For a practical starting point on PC, set Shadows to Medium, Screen Space Reflections and Volumetrics to Low, and Effects to Medium. If big fights still stutter, try lowering Background Swarm Size to Low or Medium. Keep textures high when your graphics card has enough VRAM, and use DLSS or FSR only if the GPU is limiting performance. These are settings to test, not a guaranteed best configuration: Space Marine 2 can be CPU-limited, in which case lowering resolution may do little.
Start with these settings
Change one setting at a time in a repeatable, demanding encounter. Check both average frame rate and whether frame times feel consistent; a single average can conceal short combat dips.

| Setting | Starting point | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Background Swarm Size | Low or Medium if large fights dip | May ease CPU work from enemy simulation, at the cost of making the largest hordes look less populated. PC Optimized Settings reports a 3–5% improvement in its tests when reducing this setting; Tier1Settings gives a similar estimate. These are publisher-specific results, not a guaranteed gain on every PC. Tier1Settings PC Optimized Settings |
| Shadows | Medium | A reasonable GPU-load reduction to test. PC Optimized Settings measured only a 1–2% difference in its scenes, so the benefit can be small and setup-dependent. Tier1Settings PC Optimized Settings |
| Screen Space Reflections | Low; use Default if you prefer the image | Tier1Settings recommends Low, while PC Optimized Settings found Default barely slower than Off on its test system. The better choice depends on the scene and your visual preference. Tier1Settings PC Optimized Settings |
| Volumetrics | Low when GPU-limited | Can reduce load in open battles; PC Optimized Settings reports up to a 5% frame-rate cost in large open areas on its tested setup. Fog, lighting and particles may look less full at Low. Tier1Settings PC Optimized Settings |
| Effects | Medium during combat dips | May help in horde combat, though another analysis found a smaller average cost in its tests. Keep it higher if the visual change is not worth the performance difference on your system. Tier1Settings PC Optimized Settings |
| Textures and filtering | High with at least 8 GB VRAM at 1080p or 1440p; Medium is a sensible test on a 6 GB card if stuttering suggests memory pressure | Texture memory use varies by resolution, scene and system. PC Optimized Settings reports up to 6.25 GB at 1080p, 7 GB at 1440p and 10 GB at 4K Ultra on its test setup; these are not universal requirements. Tier1Settings PC Optimized Settings |
| Upscaling | Try DLSS on supported RTX cards or FSR for broader hardware support; begin with Quality | Upscaling renders below the output resolution and can improve performance when the GPU is the limit, with a possible loss of image clarity. At 1080p, test native rendering or DLAA if you have headroom; the preferred balance depends on your display and taste. Tier1Settings PC Optimized Settings |
| Frame generation | Optional; assess base performance and responsiveness first | The game supports DLSS and FSR frame-generation components, but the available sources do not establish a universally best option or a reliable gain across hardware. Focus Patch 5.0 notes Focus FSR and DLSS Q&A |
Find out whether the CPU or GPU is the limit
- Choose a repeatable demanding scene. Note the average FPS and whether frame times remain consistent through combat. Avoid comparing different encounters or changing several options at once.
- Test resolution or upscaling. If lowering resolution or enabling upscaling barely changes performance, a CPU limit is possible. An independent analysis observed CPU-bound behavior across resolutions on its test rig; that result does not diagnose every PC. Tier1Settings PC Optimized Settings
- Try Background Swarm Size. If the dips happen around large groups, reduce it to Low or Medium and compare the same scene. The trade-off is a less populated-looking horde.
- Test GPU-heavy options if resolution helps. Try Volumetrics Low, Shadows Medium and Screen Space Reflections Low individually. Keep a change only when its visual cost is worth the measured improvement on your PC.
- Check texture settings if you see stutter. On a lower-memory graphics card, try Medium textures and filtering, particularly if the issue appears at higher resolution.
Choose upscaling and frame generation for your hardware
Focus describes FSR 2 Super Resolution as hardware-agnostic and FSR 3.1 as adding frame generation. Its Q&A lists Radeon RX 5000 Series and GeForce RTX 20 Series as AMD’s recommended minimum specification for FSR 3.1 frame generation. For NVIDIA, it lists RTX 20 Series and later for DLSS upscaling or DLAA, and RTX 40 Series and later for DLSS frame generation. Focus also says HAGS is needed for DLSS frame generation on Windows 10. Support can change with game builds and drivers, so check the graphics menu on your installed version. Focus FSR and DLSS Q&A
Upscaling and frame generation solve different problems. Upscaling can reduce GPU rendering work; frame generation creates additional displayed frames, but the cited sources do not establish its effect on responsiveness for every system. Try it only after checking how the game feels at its base frame rate, and judge smoothness alongside input response.

Troubleshoot instability separately from low FPS
If the game is unstable rather than simply slow, Focus support says overlays such as RTSS and NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience performance overlay may cause problems. Close them as a troubleshooting step and update your display driver; neither action is a guaranteed FPS boost. Focus support
