For quick reactions everyone in one voice channel can hear, start with Discord’s built-in Soundboard. Choose a separate app when you want a personal clip library, hotkeys, editing, or sounds routed through your microphone into Discord and other voice apps. The right choice depends on where the audio should go and who should manage the clips.

When Discord’s built-in Soundboard is enough
Discord describes Soundboard as a voice-channel feature that plays a short audio clip for everyone in that same channel. It is the most direct option when the goal is a shared reaction, rather than a sound transmitted as microphone audio. Users can preview clips privately, favorite sounds, and use playback on mobile. A user who is deafened will not hear native Soundboard sounds. Discord’s Soundboard guide covers playback and management.

Slots and Nitro requirements
Discord’s guide lists eight preloaded sound slots per server, with capacity increasing through server boost tiers: 24 at Tier 1, 36 at Tier 2, and 48 at Tier 3. These are Discord server configuration limits, not limits for third-party apps. Discord says Nitro is required to use a server’s Soundboard sounds in other servers; Nitro is not required to play them in the server that owns them. Discord also lists Nitro as required for entrance sounds.
Adding sounds and setting access
Soundboard use and uploads depend on permissions. Server roles or individual channel permissions can control who uses the board, and the Create Expressions permission is needed to add custom sounds. Uploads are available through Discord desktop or browser; the mobile documentation covers playback rather than uploading. If a sound is missing or the upload option is unavailable, check the relevant server and channel permissions first.

When a virtual microphone makes more sense
Voicemod’s documented desktop workflow installs a virtual microphone. In Discord, select “Voicemod Virtual Microphone” as the voice input; the same general approach applies in other voice apps that let you choose an input device. This sends soundboard audio through the selected microphone path rather than using Discord’s server-managed Soundboard. Voicemod documents custom uploads, keybinds, and community sounds. This approach suits someone who wants personal control of clips or wants to use a soundboard beyond one Discord server. The trade-off is setup: Discord must receive audio from the intended virtual input. Voicemod describes desktop and mobile availability, but its virtual-microphone routing instructions apply to desktop voice use. Claims about library size or latency are vendor claims, not independent comparisons.

When Soundpad is the better fit
Soundpad is a Windows-focused microphone playback tool, and its vendor lists Discord among the supported voice applications. It supports sound-specific hotkeys, volume normalization, recording, and editing; output can be directed to headphones, the microphone, or both. The vendor lists Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11. Physical sound buttons are a specialized option
A Stream Deck paired with Wave Link can provide dedicated physical buttons for sound playback. The documented setup requires Wave Link to route its built-in Soundboard audio to Discord, so this is a streaming-oriented control path rather than a prerequisite for using Discord Soundboard, Voicemod, or Soundpad. The setup is described in Elgato’s Wave Link information. Check the exact hardware model and current listing before buying, since hardware and software compatibility can vary.
Set up the option that matches your workflow
Use Discord Soundboard
- Join the Discord server and voice channel where you want sounds to play.
- Open the channel’s Soundboard and choose a clip to play it for participants in that channel.
- If you need to upload a clip, use Discord desktop or browser and make sure you have the Create Expressions permission. Ask a server administrator to review role or channel permissions if controls are unavailable.
- If you want a server’s sounds in another server, check Discord’s Nitro requirement for cross-server use.
Use microphone playback
- Install and configure the soundboard app you selected. For Voicemod’s desktop workflow, install its virtual microphone; for Soundpad, configure its microphone playback and output choices.
- In Discord, open User Settings, then Voice & Video, and choose the relevant virtual or app-provided microphone as the input device.
- Play a test clip and verify that Discord is using the intended input. If other people cannot hear it, recheck the selected input and the soundboard app’s routing settings.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
These options have different destinations, sharing models, and setup requirements, so they should not be treated as interchangeable products in a performance ranking. The product documentation describes workflows and features, but does not establish an independent head-to-head result for latency, reliability, or sound quality. Choose by platform, whether clips should be shared by a server or kept personal, and whether you need hotkeys or editing.
