For a Linux desktop where you want to manage scenes, audio and visuals, start with OBS Studio. For a fixed playlist on a headless Ubuntu host, FFmpeg supervised by a service manager is a leaner option if you are comfortable maintaining a command-line setup. Neither option guarantees uninterrupted streaming on its own: the computer, network, YouTube connection and music rights all need planning.

Set up OBS for a Linux desktop stream
The OBS Project lists Linux/Unix support and requires an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and the X window system or Wayland. Those are baseline requirements, not a promise that a particular machine can encode your intended stream continuously. - Prepare the program. In OBS, create a scene and add the audio source, still image or video background you intend to use. Test the actual playlist or program—not just a short empty scene—so you can assess CPU/GPU load and audio behavior.
- Create or schedule a YouTube stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule the broadcast, and retrieve its stream URL and key. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so verify channel readiness before the planned start. - Use the endpoint shown in your Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS when supported; it is RTMP over TLS/SSL. OBS’s maintained service configuration includes a YouTube RTMPS preset with primary and backup endpoints, but use the URL shown for your own stream rather than copying an example endpoint. - Connect OBS and YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube if available, and enter the stream key or connect the account if that option is offered. Confirm the selected server/URL agrees with the Live Control Room’s stream settings. Do not share screenshots or logs containing the key.
- Set sustainable output and test. Use the guidance in the settings section below, then run a representative test and inspect YouTube’s stream health before relying on the broadcast.
- Plan operation and recovery. Keep the computer and network available for the whole session, monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health, and document how to restart the program and reconnect the feed if either stops.
Use FFmpeg for a fixed playlist on a headless host
FFmpeg can suit a playlist with a static or simple visual when you do not need live scene switching. A community Ubuntu VPS example shows looping local audio/video and running FFmpeg as a systemd service. Treat that as a starting pattern, not a turnkey reliability or security guarantee. - Prepare the host and media. Install FFmpeg on an Ubuntu host you administer, place the cleared media where the service can read it, and verify that the combined audio/video program plays as expected. Keep the playlist and file paths stable.
- Build and test the encoder command. Configure the inputs to loop as intended, encode to a YouTube-supported format and bitrate, and publish to the RTMPS URL and stream key from the stream’s Live Control Room. The exact command depends on your input files and chosen codecs; test it interactively before creating a service. Never put a real stream key in a public script or repository.
- Run it under service supervision. Configure systemd or another service manager to start the tested command, restart it after a process failure, and write logs you can inspect. Service restart can recover an FFmpeg process, but it does not by itself guarantee network availability, a valid YouTube session, or successful recovery after every failure.
- Monitor and rehearse recovery. Check service logs and YouTube stream health; test what happens after a process restart and a network interruption. Keep a documented way to rotate a compromised key and restore the service.
The VPS example does not establish a universal host size, security configuration, uptime level or recovery policy. Those depend on your media, encoding choices, network and operational setup.
Choose encoder settings YouTube can ingest
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, its recommendation is 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Match video bitrate to codec, resolution and frame rate; do not select a generic maximum simply because it is available. A kirtan stream built around audio and a still image may gain little from higher video resolution. The right setting is one your encoder and upload connection can sustain over time. YouTube recommends checking upload speed, testing representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health. Prefer a stable wired connection where practical.

RTMPS or HLS?
RTMPS is the straightforward choice for a typical audio-led broadcast. YouTube also supports HLS ingestion, which can be useful for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, but has higher latency because it sends video in segments. HLS has specific requirements for segment duration, TS segment format, rolling playlists and HTTPS POST/PUT; use it only when the needed capability justifies the added setup. Plan around archives, rights and continuous operation
A 24/7 broadcast is not one automatically archived video
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A single 24/7 broadcast exceeds that condition, so plan recurring sessions and decide how you will handle restarts and archives rather than assuming the whole continuous run becomes one archived video. YouTube live stream archives
Clear the music before going live
Kirtan can involve traditional material, new compositions, particular arrangements and specific recordings; rights in one do not automatically settle rights in the others. YouTube’s live-stream terms say streamers represent that they have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of their live content, including music licensing rights. YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. A match can lead to a warning, interruption or termination. If you have a license for third-party material, YouTube says the channel may still need to be added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist to avoid interruption. - Monitor both the local encoder or service and YouTube’s stream health; one can fail while the other still appears active.
- Document how to restart the encoder, reconnect to the correct stream and replace a compromised key.
- Decide who will respond to failures and how recurring sessions will be started and ended.
No cited source establishes a universal uptime guarantee or a failure rate for either OBS or FFmpeg. The recovery burden depends on whether you operate a local desktop or remote host and how you configure monitoring and restarts.
