Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For most Windows 11 users, the built-in Snipping Tool is enough for everyday screenshots, short recordings, annotations and text extraction. If you need more, choose ShareX for configurable capture and automation, Greenshot for straightforward screenshot markup, PicPick for capture plus design utilities, or Snagit for repeatable visual documentation.
What is the best Snipping Tool alternative for Windows 11?
There is no single best replacement for every user. The right choice depends on what Snipping Tool does not do for your workflow: ShareX has the broadest set of capture and automation features; Greenshot keeps screenshot capture and annotation focused; PicPick adds design tools; and Snagit is built for documentation tasks such as step guides and scrolling captures.

Check what Snipping Tool can already do
Microsoft’s current guide covers freeform, rectangular, window and full-screen image snips, as well as video snipping. You can annotate and crop images, extract text, quickly redact detected sensitive text, and save or share captures. Text extraction is performed locally on the device, according to Microsoft.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
Use Windows+Shift+S to start image snipping or Windows+Shift+R to start video snipping. Microsoft identifies Perfect Screenshot and Color Picker as Copilot+ PC features, so do not assume they are available on every Windows 11 computer.
Choose an alternative by workflow
ShareX: capture breadth and automation
ShareX is the strongest fit if you want to customize what happens after a capture rather than simply save an image. Its official feature list includes selected regions, active windows, monitors, scrolling pages and GIF capture, along with screen recording, annotation and editor tools, blur or pixelation, OCR, QR scanning and upload destinations. Configurable post-capture actions can connect those steps into a repeatable workflow.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
That breadth can be useful, but it also means more options to configure than a focused screenshot utility. ShareX describes itself as free and open source for Windows.
Greenshot: straightforward screenshots and markup
Greenshot focuses on taking a region, window or full-screen screenshot, then annotating, highlighting or obscuring parts of it before export. It is a practical fit when your main task is to explain or share a static screen image rather than build an automated capture pipeline.
Rank #3
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
Be precise about its scrolling feature: the Greenshot site’s scrolling-page wording specifically names Internet Explorer. It does not establish scrolling support in current browsers, so do not choose it on the assumption that it will capture long pages in your browser.
PicPick: screenshots plus design utilities
PicPick combines capture and editing with tools such as a color picker, ruler and magnifier. Its listed capabilities also include scrolling capture, multi-monitor support, customizable shortcuts and recording with system audio and microphone. It suits users who want those measurement and design utilities in the same Windows application as their screenshots.

Snagit: recurring documentation and guides
Snagit is aimed at people who repeatedly create instructions or other visual documentation. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide
- Stay with Snipping Tool if its image and video capture, annotation and text-extraction features cover your usual tasks.
- Pick ShareX if you need many capture modes or want to automate editing, uploads or other after-capture actions.
- Pick Greenshot if you want a focused workflow for capturing and marking up screenshots, and do not rely on unverified current-browser scrolling support.
- Pick PicPick if its color, measurement and magnification tools are as important as capture; confirm commercial-use terms if needed.
- Pick Snagit if you regularly produce step-by-step guides, need its documentation features, or want a Windows-and-macOS option.
Is there a free alternative to Snipping Tool?
Yes. ShareX describes itself as free and open source, while PicPick is free for personal non-commercial use. Greenshot is another Windows screenshot utility; check its official site for current terms. Snipping Tool is built into Windows. Do not treat PicPick’s personal-use terms as permission for commercial use: its site says a license is required for that.
