If you mainly play one or two free-to-play games now and then, start without Game Pass: Xbox says free-to-play multiplayer is available to every Xbox player. A subscription is worth considering when you expect to use its changing game library, plan-specific benefits, or cloud play often enough to justify a recurring charge.
Do free Xbox games require Game Pass for online multiplayer?
No. Xbox says free-to-play multiplayer access is open to every Xbox player, so you do not need Game Pass simply to play a free-to-play game online. Xbox’s free-to-play catalog includes titles such as Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, eFootball, and Marvel Rivals (Xbox free-to-play catalog; Xbox Game Pass plan comparison).

That answers the basic cost question: a casual player can choose a free-to-play title and play its multiplayer without paying for a Game Pass subscription. The free-to-play route is not the same as getting every paid game for free; it applies to the games Xbox identifies as free-to-play.
What does Game Pass add?
Game Pass is a subscription that provides access to a changing library of games, with features that depend on the plan. That gives you a broader selection to try than choosing from free-to-play titles alone, but a large advertised catalog does not guarantee that a particular game is available on your plan, device, or in your region.

Which option fits your play habits?
Choose free-to-play first if you play occasionally
- You mostly return to one or two free-to-play games.
- You do not want a recurring subscription for access to games you may not play.
- You are satisfied with the free-to-play games available on your device.
Consider Game Pass if you will use the library
- You regularly want to try different games, including titles beyond the free-to-play catalog.
- The games you want are currently included in a plan available for your device and region.
- Your chosen plan includes a feature you expect to use, such as cloud play on a supported device.
Cloud play and device support vary by plan and device, so confirm that your exact setup is supported before subscribing. A plan’s advertised library size alone is not a reason to pay if the games you want are missing or you will rarely play.
How should you compare the cost?
Compare the current local subscription price with how often you expect to use the included games and features. Xbox says subscriptions continue automatically, so review the renewal and cancellation terms before signing up. Prices and terms can vary by location and change over time; check Xbox’s current local plan page rather than relying on an old price or a one-time promotion.

Bottom line for a casual Xbox player
Free-to-play is usually the sensible starting point if you mainly want a few free games: Xbox says you can play their multiplayer without Game Pass. Subscribe only when the included library or a plan-specific feature matches what you will actually play and use.
