Best SMS Providers for n8n Missed-Call Text-Back Automation

Twilio and Plivo have documented n8n paths for voice and messaging. Learn how they compare with Telnyx, what US SMS prices exclude, and why missed-call detection depends on your phone setup.

Twilio is the clearest starting point when you want one provider to report a missed-call outcome and send the follow-up text through documented n8n paths. Plivo is a documented alternative for n8n voice-and-messaging workflows; Telnyx is worth comparing on US message pricing, but the available documentation here does not establish a native n8n node or a ready-made missed-call trigger. The key is to choose a provider and phone setup that can detect an unanswered call—not just send SMS.

What a missed-call text-back workflow needs

A text-message API does not automatically know that a business missed a call. The workflow needs a phone system that reports the call result, an event route that n8n can receive, and a condition that sends a text only for eligible unanswered calls. For Twilio, the Voice documentation describes a no-answer call status and an asynchronous status callback to a configured URL. Twilio defines no-answer as “The call ended without being answered.” Twilio’s call-status documentation explains the status values; the callback configuration is described in its Programmable Voice API documentation.

That status-and-callback capability is not, by itself, a complete recipe for every phone number or account configuration. Confirm how the calls to your business number enter the provider’s call flow, and test that the event n8n receives represents the missed call you intend to answer.

Provider comparison

Provider Documented n8n and call support US SMS price reference Best fit
Twilio The n8n node supports sending SMS/MMS and WhatsApp messages, as well as making text-to-speech calls. Twilio Voice documents no-answer status and callbacks. n8n Twilio node $0.0083 per inbound or outbound US local long-code SMS, on Twilio’s rate card accessed 2026-10-03; number rental and other applicable charges are additional. Twilio US SMS pricing Strongest documented starting point when the same Twilio setup can handle both the call event and follow-up message.
Plivo Plivo documents n8n workflows for SMS, MMS and voice calls. Its listed actions include SMS, US/Canada MMS and voice calls. Plivo’s n8n documentation $0.0077 per inbound or outbound US long-code SMS on Plivo’s rate card accessed 2026-10-03; carrier surcharges apply. Plivo SMS pricing A documented provider-centered voice-and-text alternative. Verify that its call event exposes the precise unanswered condition your workflow needs.
Telnyx A native n8n node and a ready-made missed-call trigger path are not established by the documentation reviewed for this comparison. $0.004 per US SMS message part, plus carrier fees, on Telnyx’s rate card accessed 2026-10-03. Carrier passthrough fees and taxes vary by destination. Telnyx messaging pricing A price/API comparison candidate if you are prepared to verify and configure the n8n connection and call-event path yourself.

The prices are provider-published US figures, not all-in cost estimates or a like-for-like “cheapest” ranking. A text may be split into multiple message parts; carrier fees, number rental, destination, volume assumptions and possible registration expenses also affect the bill. Plivo notes carrier surcharges, while Telnyx lists its price per message part plus carrier fees. Check the current price pages for your intended route and usage before choosing.

How to choose for your phone setup

Start with the number customers actually call. A provider’s SMS capability is useful only if the call event can be observed for that number and the reply can be sent from an appropriate business number. Depending on your current phone system, that may require using a provider number, porting or forwarding a number, or connecting the existing system through its own call-event mechanism. The evidence available here does not establish a universal answer for every phone system, country or number inventory.

  • Call event: Can the provider or phone system report the call outcome—specifically unanswered/no-answer—to an endpoint n8n can receive?
  • Number and routing: Can your business use, port or forward its number while preserving the caller details and callback behavior your workflow needs?
  • n8n work: Is there a documented node for the exact operation, or will you need to configure an HTTP request, credentials, request body and response handling?
  • All-in cost: Compare inbound and outbound messages, message parts, carrier fees, number rental, registration or verification charges, and any volume-based pricing.
  • Geography: Verify local number availability, destination support, throughput limits and country-specific carrier or regulatory requirements.
  • Operations: Plan for delivery-status checks, retries, duplicate-event prevention, opt-outs, webhook validation, logging and ownership of failures. The cited material does not establish a comparative reliability winner.

A practical n8n workflow shape

A typical design routes a call outcome into n8n, filters for an eligible missed call, sends one concise text, and records both the event and message result. This is an implementation pattern, not a tested end-to-end workflow; individual providers and phone configurations expose different events and fields.

OSTENT UMTS/HSPA+/LTE 4G Modem Pool 16 Ports for Quectel EC21-A Module
  • 16 Ports Industrial-Grade Modem Pool
  • Based on EC21-A module for Quectel
  • USB Port Interface
  • Control via AT Commands
  • Support FDD LTE: B2/B4/B12, WCDMA: B2/B4/B5
  1. Receive the call event: Configure the phone provider or call flow to send the relevant status to an n8n webhook or supported trigger. Confirm the event includes a usable caller number and call outcome.
  2. Filter before sending: Continue only when the call is genuinely unanswered and meets your business rules. Exclude answered calls, internal calls, blocked or invalid numbers, and duplicate events as appropriate.
  3. Send one useful reply: Identify the business, acknowledge the missed call, and give the caller a clear next step. Send from a number suitable for replies and follow-up.
  4. Log the result: Store the call identifier, time, caller, outcome and message status in the system your team uses. Use an idempotency check or equivalent so a repeated callback does not send repeated texts.
  5. Handle replies and opt-outs: Decide how replies reach staff or another workflow, and stop messaging when a recipient opts out.

For Twilio, the documented status callback is a relevant event source, but verify the incoming-number and call-flow configuration for your account rather than assuming that enabling an SMS node alone detects missed calls. For Plivo, confirm the exact voice event and unanswered-call condition available for your design before building the send step.

US texting requirements to check

For Twilio, application-to-person SMS or MMS sent to US recipients over a 10-digit long-code number requires A2P 10DLC registration, according to Twilio’s A2P 10DLC guidance. Its registration materials ask businesses to describe the opt-in flow and provide message samples. Twilio’s consent guidance also calls out identifying the message type and frequency, disclosing message and data rates, and including opt-out instructions such as STOP. Rules depend on the provider, route, number type and recipient location; this is a setup reminder, not a complete legal analysis or evidence that other vendors apply identical requirements.

Bottom line on the providers

Choose Twilio first if you can route the business call through a configuration that exposes its no-answer callback and want a documented n8n path for messaging. Choose Plivo if its documented n8n voice-and-SMS support better fits your provider-centered setup, after confirming the exact missed-call event. Consider Telnyx for its listed US per-part rate only after verifying how you will connect its API and call events to n8n. In all three cases, phone-number compatibility and call detection matter as much as the SMS rate.
