Four watches cover most of this ground: Apple Watch, Google Pixel Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch and, with a major caveat, Garmin Venu 4. The question that matters most is who gets the alert after a fall. Apple, Google and Samsung document workflows in which the watch can call emergency services. Garmin says its detected-fall alerts go only to your designated contacts. No official source reviewed here gives a comparable accuracy figure, so no watch should be treated as one that catches every fall.
Contact alert vs. emergency-services call
“SOS” on a spec sheet can mean two different things. One is a message to a person you chose. The other is a call to emergency services. Garmin states that its incident and fall notifications go through Garmin Connect to your assistance contacts and do not contact emergency services on your behalf. Apple, Google and Samsung document emergency-call behavior in specific fall or SOS workflows, subject to model, region, phone and network. | Watch | What happens after a detected fall | Phone pairing | Key checks |

| Google Pixel Watch | If you don’t respond to the alert within 60 seconds, it can call emergency services and share location in an automated voice message | Android phone; Wi-Fi models rely on the phone to place the call | Country availability, connectivity |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch (supported models) | Hard Fall Detection can share information or call, depending on your settings | Samsung and other Android phones (per Samsung’s compatibility page) | Off by default; needs setup and contacts |
| Garmin Venu 4 | Sends your name and location, if available, to assistance contacts via Garmin Connect | Garmin Connect app | No automatic emergency-services call for a detected fall |
Apple Watch: the iPhone choice
Apple says Fall Detection on Apple Watch Series 4 or later and Apple Watch SE or later can connect you to emergency services after a hard fall. If you remain immobile, the watch can place the call. Non-cellular models need an iPhone nearby for that call. Network setup and local support affect whether it works, so check Apple’s support page for your country before buying. For iPhone owners this is the most direct option, because the watch is iPhone-only.
Google Pixel Watch: the Android choice
Google says that when a hard fall is detected and you don’t respond to the alert within 60 seconds, the watch can share your location in an automated voice message during the emergency call. That 60 seconds is a response window, not a measure of accuracy. Fall Detection isn’t available in every country and depends on network connectivity and other factors. A Wi-Fi Pixel Watch relies on its paired phone to call emergency services, so leaving the phone behind can break the chain. See Google’s safety features page.
#1 Best Overall
- FALL DETECTION WITH COUNTDOWN & CAREGIVER ALERT:When fall detection is enabled on both the watch and companion app, a detected fall starts a countdown so the wearer can cancel a false alert. If not canceled, the configured caregiver alert process begins through the paired smartphone. Bluetooth, app permissions and phone connection are required; test the alert after setup and before daily use.
- SOS ACCESS & BLUETOOTH CALLING:Open the SOS function from the watch to reach a preset emergency contact, and answer or make Bluetooth calls while connected to a compatible smartphone. This is a phone-connected safety watch, not a standalone cellular, GPS or 911 dispatch device.
- CAREGIVER-ASSISTED SETUP FOR RELIABLE USE:A family member should help install the app, pair the watch, add emergency contacts, enable fall detection on the watch and phone, approve background permissions, and complete a test alert. Once configured, the senior can focus on wearing the watch and using its essential safety functions.
- 1.9-INCH DISPLAY WITH MULTIPLE BAND OPTIONS:The 1.9-inch screen provides a larger view of time, calls, reminders and daily activity. Choose silicone for softer everyday wear, leather for a classic look, or steel for a dressier finish. Review the watch dimensions and band style before ordering, especially for smaller wrists.
- DAILY WELLNESS TRENDS & REMOTE FAMILY VIEW:Review steps, heart rate and sleep information through the companion app, along with alarms and sedentary reminders for everyday routines. Wellness readings are intended for general reference only and should not replace professional medical equipment or emergency services.
Safety Signal is a separate service
Safety Signal has its own region, carrier, LTE-watch and subscription requirements. Per Google’s Safety Signal page, it is limited to the US, Canada, UK and Germany, with carrier exceptions for some Watch 2 and 3 purchases. Don’t assume it comes with every Pixel Watch.
Samsung Galaxy Watch: configurable, but you must switch it on
Samsung says supported Galaxy Watch models offer Hard Fall Detection, which is off by default. You enable it through the Galaxy Wearable app and must add emergency contacts. Settings control when falls are detected and whether the watch shares information or places a call. Samsung warns that high-impact activity can register as a fall. Screens and options may vary by provider, phone or watch. Details: fall detection, emergencies, and phone compatibility, which lists SOS Request and Fall Detection as working with Samsung and other Android phones.

- Confirm your exact Galaxy Watch model is listed as supported.
- Open Galaxy Wearable on the paired phone and enable Hard Fall Detection.
- Add emergency contacts.
- Choose whether the watch shares information or also calls.
Garmin Venu 4: only with the caveat
Garmin’s current support article says Fall Detection is only available on Venu 4. When it detects an incident or fall, Garmin Connect can send your name and location, if available, to your assistance contacts. You must set up those contacts first, and supported activity profiles vary by device. Voice-enabled Venu watches dial emergency services only when you activate assistance manually. Garmin adds: “These should not be relied on as a primary method to obtain emergency assistance.” (Garmin Support). It suits someone who wants a family alert on a fitness-focused watch, not someone who needs an automatic emergency call.

How to choose
- iPhone user: Apple Watch. Choose cellular if you may be away from your phone.
- Android user wanting a clean setup: Pixel Watch, after confirming Fall Detection is offered in your country.
- Android user wanting adjustable behavior: Galaxy Watch, remembering to enable the feature yourself.
- Contacts-only alerts are enough: Garmin Venu 4.
- Need professional monitoring: none of these sources describe a monitored service for these watches, so a dedicated medical-alert product may suit you better.
Limits to accept
Availability can differ by model, software version, country, carrier and phone connection, so verify each on the manufacturer’s page for your region. Detection can miss falls and can misfire, and the sources provide no accuracy statistics. Test the setup, including contacts and phone proximity, before relying on it.
