For PC games streamed to an Android phone or tablet, start by testing 1080p at 60 FPS if your display, host PC, and network can sustain it. It is a practical baseline, not a guaranteed optimum. If the picture stutters, lower the bitrate or resolution and check the streaming app’s performance stats before changing devices. There is no universal battery-life figure: the phone still decodes and displays a live video stream, so measure drain on your own device.
What settings should you start with?
These settings apply to streaming a game from a PC to an Android device, such as with Moonlight or Steam Link. The PC runs the game; the Android device receives and decodes video. Actual results depend on the host, client hardware, network, game, and display.

| Setting | Practical starting point | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Test 1080p if the Android display, host setup, and connection can handle it. | Lower it if the stream hitches or the device struggles to decode. Match the stream to the display or host setup where practical. |
| Frame rate | Test 60 FPS on a display and client capable of supporting it. | Try 90 or 120 FPS only if the whole chain supports those rates and the stream remains smooth. |
| Bitrate | Use a rate the network can sustain without hitches or drops. | Reduce it if network drops or jitter appear; raise it gradually only while the connection remains stable. |
| Moonlight frame pacing | Start with Balanced (recommended) on Android. | Compare with the lowest-latency option if responsiveness matters more and the connection remains stable. |
Higher resolution can improve image detail, while higher FPS can make motion and input feel more responsive. Both demand a capable client and a stable stream. Higher bitrate can preserve detail but may cause hitches on a constrained connection. These are trade-offs to test, not measured guarantees of improved quality or battery use.

1. Establish a stable network first
Moonlight recommends a strong wireless link to the Android device and highly recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Connect the host PC to the router by Ethernet where possible. Valve likewise says wired networking provides the best result when the Remote Play client supports it (Steam Link – Suggested Network Settings).

For Steam Remote Play, Valve suggests beginning at 3 Mbit/s and increasing bandwidth gradually until hitches occur, then reducing it. This is Valve’s tuning method for Steam, not a universal bitrate recommendation for Moonlight or every home network. Steam Link also permits live changes to resolution and bandwidth while streaming.
2. Set resolution and frame rate, then check the stream
Start at 1080p and 60 FPS only if those settings are available and your device and connection can sustain them. If you see stutter, reduce bitrate or resolution and check the client’s performance overlay. Moonlight advertises streaming up to 4K at 120 FPS, but that is a product capability, not a promise that every Android device can decode or display those settings.

Moonlight’s setup guide warns that a resolution mismatch can cause scaling artifacts in its documented HDR configuration. Matching stream and host display resolutions where practical can help avoid that issue in that setup.
3. Adjust Moonlight frame pacing
Moonlight’s Android FAQ labels Balanced (recommended) as its recommended frame-pacing option. It uses an Android frame callback and buffers up to one frame to smooth network jitter and V-sync drift. The lowest-latency option renders decoded frames immediately and keeps display refresh as high as possible. Start with Balanced, then compare the options using the performance overlay; favor lowest latency if the stream stays stable and responsiveness matters more to you.

What to check when the stream stutters
- Network drops or jitter: Moonlight says high network-drop figures can indicate an unreliable connection, including 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Try a more stable connection or lower the bitrate. Check the client performance overlay for relevant indicators.
- Hitches after raising bandwidth: Reduce bitrate to the last stable level. For Steam Remote Play, use Valve’s gradual increase-and-reduce method rather than assuming one rate fits every network.
- Image softness or scaling artifacts: Raise resolution only if the stream remains stable. For the HDR setup described in Moonlight’s guide, avoid a mismatch between stream and host display resolution where practical.
- Host-side bitrate cap: In Sunshine,
max_bitratecaps the encoding rate; a value of zero means Sunshine follows the bitrate requested by Moonlight. Sunshine’s minimum FPS target affects low-motion or static content, so static desktop statistics should not be mistaken for gameplay frame rate. - Host selection behavior: NVIDIA GameStream documentation describes automatic selection based on GPU and home-network conditions, with manual resolution and refresh-rate options. That guidance applies to NVIDIA’s setup, not every streaming host.
How to think about battery use
Streaming avoids rendering the PC game locally on the Android device, but the phone or tablet still decodes and displays a live video stream. No universal Android battery-life estimate, wattage, or percentage drain is established by the cited streaming documentation. Display, decoder, radio, brightness, device, stream settings, codec, and environment can all affect power use; the direction and size of a change should be checked on the device rather than assumed.
To compare settings on your own device, keep the game, screen brightness, network, and play duration constant. Record the battery percentage before and after the same interval at lower and higher resolution/FPS settings, and note whether the stream stays smooth. This gives you a practical comparison for your setup, not a result that applies to other Android devices.

Compatibility details that affect the settings available
Moonlight’s Google Play listing says the app supports H.264 and HEVC; AV1 requires Sunshine and a supported host GPU. HDR requires Android 7.0 or later, an HEVC Main10 hardware decoder, and an HDR10-capable display. These are compatibility requirements, not a guarantee that every Android device or stream configuration will support HDR.
Moonlight supports Android gamepad input, and its app listing describes support for several controller families. A physical controller is optional; compatibility depends on the device and controller. The app listing, updated September 8, 2026, advertises up to 4K 120 FPS as a capability. Sunshine documentation is versioned v2026.214.30634. Settings and device support can change, so verify current app and host compatibility when configuring a particular setup.
