The most reliable approach is to check your PC against the published requirements, then test one setting at a time in the same location, at the same resolution and game speed. If slowdowns happen only in particular areas, shadows are a reasonable first setting to investigate; that lead comes from one player report and a developer reply, not a benchmark for every PC.
Start with a controlled before-and-after test
Settlement size, activity, camera position, resolution and game version can all affect what you see. If those conditions change between tests, it is difficult to tell whether a graphics adjustment helped.

- Record your game version, resolution, CPU, GPU and RAM. Note the settlement’s approximate stage or population, game speed, location and current graphics settings.
- Choose a scene where the slowdown is easy to notice. Keep the camera position and game speed consistent for each comparison.
- Change just one graphics option, then revisit that scene under the same conditions. Record whether the slowdown feels better, unchanged or worse.
- Restore the original option before testing another one, or clearly record each successive change so you know what caused any difference.
This is a practical diagnostic method, not a published performance test. Crate Entertainment’s official material does not provide a setting-by-setting FPS table or a guaranteed target across different hardware, resolutions and settlement sizes.
Which settings should you test first?
Shadows for slowdowns in particular areas
If performance drops in specific areas rather than across the whole settlement, test a lower shadow setting or turn shadows off, then compare the same view again. In an August 2026 forum thread, a player reported area-specific drops; a Crate representative replied that newer shaders and technology used in the affected assets were more intensive and that lowering shadows made a difference for that player. This is a useful clue for similar cases, not proof that shadows are the cause—or the best fix—on every system. Read the forum report and reply.

Weather effects when slowdowns coincide with effects
Crate’s v1.0.0 and hotfix notes document an in-game option to toggle weather particles or effects. If a slowdown coincides with those effects, try the toggle and compare the same scene. The notes establish that the option exists, but do not quantify an FPS benefit from disabling it. See the official v1.0.0 and hotfix notes.
When no single graphics option helps
If slowdowns occur everywhere, first check your hardware against the requirements below and confirm that the installed game is current. If the problem appears mainly as your settlement grows, record the settlement size and affected scene along with your other test details before seeking help. An older v0.9.3 changelog mentions an optimization aimed particularly at large settlements, but it does not establish performance for current builds. View the historical v0.9.3 changelog.

Check your PC against the published requirements
The table reflects the requirements shown on Steam, accessed October 4, 2026. These are published system requirements, not independent benchmarks; meeting the recommended tier does not guarantee a particular frame rate in every resolution or settlement. Check the Steam listing for current requirements.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
If your PC is below a listed requirement, that is a reason to investigate compatibility or a suitable upgrade—not evidence that a specific purchase will fix your slowdown. In particular, 16 GB is the published recommended memory figure, but the available sources do not show that adding RAM alone improves performance on a system that already meets it.
