Best Self-Hosted Photo Gallery Apps for Keeping Your Pictures Private

Immich leads for phone-first backup, PhotoPrism for browsing and search, Memories for existing Nextcloud users, and Ente Photos for an encryption-led design. Learn the trade-offs, requirements and recovery practices before self-hosting your library.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Immich is the best starting point for most people who want automatic phone uploads to a server they control. PhotoPrism is a stronger fit for desktop-first browsing and search, Memories makes sense when you already run Nextcloud, and Ente Photos is aimed at people who put its device-side encryption design ahead of deployment simplicity. Photoview and Nextcloud Photos are narrower alternatives.

Self-hosting changes who operates the server; it does not automatically make a photo library private or backed up. Your exposure depends on authentication, network access, software updates, storage permissions, encryption, and whether a separate copy of the originals exists. Choose the application whose workflow and maintenance burden match what you can reliably operate.

Quick picks

App Best fit What you operate Phone workflow Important qualification
Immich Automatic mobile backup and a modern self-hosted library Docker-based server application Official mobile apps and web access Project guidance calls for at least 6 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores; thumbnails and transcoded video add storage
PhotoPrism Browsing, indexing and search on a standalone server Docker is recommended; manual Linux packages are also documented Progressive Web App; background upload can use a compatible app such as PhotoSync Do not assume a first-party native uploader or unchanged edition features
Nextcloud Memories People who already use Nextcloud Nextcloud plus the Memories app Nextcloud mobile apps; an early-access Android client is documented Preview generation and file indexing affect performance, especially with external storage
Ente Photos A privacy architecture centered on device-side encryption A multi-component Docker Compose deployment Use the clients documented by the project The sample self-hosting setup is a starting point, not a turnkey production design
Photoview RAW files and EXIF-focused personal galleries Self-hosted server application Not stated in the project material reviewed here A narrower choice; the project material does not establish it as the best general-purpose option
Nextcloud Photos A simpler official photo app inside Nextcloud Nextcloud Mobile access is documented Memories exposes more of the documented organization and processing features

The descriptions above come from each project’s documentation rather than independent laboratory tests. Check the current release notes, hardware requirements and licensing before deployment.

What “self-hosted” does—and does not—protect

With a self-hosted gallery, you choose the server or hosting environment, store the library there and administer the software. That can reduce dependence on a consumer cloud provider, but the server becomes your responsibility. A stolen password, an exposed administrative port, an unpatched container or a failed disk can still reveal or destroy the collection.

#1 Best Overall
Synology 2-Bay DiskStation DS223j (Diskless)
  • Secure private cloud - Enjoy 100% data ownership and multi-platform access from anywhere
  • Easy sharing and syncing - Safely access and share files and media from anywhere, and keep clients, colleagues and collaborators on the same page
  • Automated Backup Protection - Set-and-forget backups for Macs, PCs and mobile devices to multiple destinations including cloud and external drives
  • Home Security System - Record and monitor your property 24/7 with support for multiple IP cameras and remote viewing
  • 2-Year Warranty - Reliable hardware backed by Synology's expert customer support team and ongoing software updates

Separate the privacy properties

  • Server ownership: who controls the machine and its storage.
  • Transport security: whether connections use HTTPS and whether credentials are protected in transit.
  • At-rest protection: encryption of disks, volumes or backups if someone obtains the storage.
  • End-to-end encryption: whether the service operator can read content or metadata. This is different from merely running software on your own server.
  • Operational privacy: account permissions, logs, sharing links, exposed ports and the people who can administer the host.

Decide which threat you are addressing. A private home server may protect against a platform’s data-mining policy, while it does little against an attacker who reaches an unpatched service. Encrypted uploads may limit server-side inspection, but they do not remove the need to secure clients and recovery keys.

Backups are a separate system

A gallery indexes and displays files; it is not automatically a backup. Keep an independent copy of original photos and videos, preferably on a different device or location, and perform a test restore before deleting the phone originals. Include the database, configuration and any encryption or recovery material required by your chosen application. If a project advises retaining plaintext copies while you establish a backup plan, follow that advice rather than deleting the only readable originals.

Immich: the strongest fit for phone-first backup

Immich is the clearest choice when the primary job is getting photos and videos from a phone into a self-hosted library, then browsing them from the web and mobile applications. Its official quick-start documents a Docker-based installation, first-user administrator registration, web access and mobile apps.

Capacity guidance

Immich’s requirements documentation recommends at least 6 GB of RAM for a smooth experience, especially while uploading, and the quick-start lists at least 2 CPU cores. These are project guidelines, not independent benchmark results; indexing load, collection size, simultaneous users and video processing can change the practical requirement. Immich also states that thumbnails and transcoded video increase library size by an average of 10–20%. Treat that percentage as the project’s stated average, not a guarantee for your collection.

Typical setup path

  1. Choose a supported host with enough memory, CPU, storage and a reliable filesystem.
  2. Install Docker and Docker Compose as required by the current Immich documentation.
  3. Download the versioned Compose configuration from the official quick-start and set the documented storage locations and credentials.
  4. Start the containers and open the web address shown by the installation instructions.
  5. Register the first account; Immich treats that first user as the administrator.
  6. Install the mobile app, point it at your server address and grant only the photo and background-upload permissions you intend to use.
  7. Upload a small test set, confirm dates, motion photos and videos, then verify that the originals exist in your server storage and in your independent backup.

Container updates, database maintenance, reverse-proxy configuration and backup jobs remain your responsibility. A roadmap item marked “Soon” is not a shipped feature, so base your design on the current release rather than planned work.

Choose Immich when

  • Background phone upload is more important than a lightweight installation.
  • You can administer Docker and monitor storage growth from generated thumbnails and video transcodes.
  • You want a dedicated gallery rather than adding a photo layer to an existing file platform.

PhotoPrism: a standalone browsing and search specialist

PhotoPrism is designed around browsing, indexing, organization and search filters for photos and videos. Its feature documentation also describes a Progressive Web App, so a phone can use an installable browser experience without implying that the server includes a first-party native backup client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deployment choices

The project recommends Docker for its self-hosted Community Edition and documents Linux, macOS, Windows, Raspberry Pi, FreeBSD and NAS deployment possibilities. Docker Compose is the recommended private-server route; manual Linux packages are also documented. Follow the current Compose file and edition instructions because licensing, plan names and included functions can change.

Phone uploads need an explicit plan

PhotoPrism documentation mentions compatible applications such as PhotoSync for background phone backup. That is an accessory-app workflow, not evidence that PhotoPrism itself supplies a native mobile uploader. Test background operation on your particular phone platform, especially after battery-optimization updates, before treating it as an unattended backup.

Choose PhotoPrism when

  • You primarily curate and search a large library from a browser.
  • You want a standalone service and are comfortable arranging a separate upload tool.
  • Your host is a NAS or another system covered by the documented deployment options.

Nextcloud Memories: the photo layer for an existing Nextcloud server

Memories is a Nextcloud application, not a standalone gallery server. Its natural audience is someone who already operates Nextcloud and wants a richer photo experience integrated with those files.

Documented capabilities

Memories provides timeline browsing based on EXIF dates, rewind views, albums, external sharing, archive, maps and video transcoding. The project also documents mobile-web support and AI tagging through the Recognize and Face Recognition companion applications. Those AI functions therefore depend on the relevant Nextcloud components; they are not guaranteed by installing Memories alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Indexing and storage considerations

The documentation recommends generating previews for performance. If files are added outside the normal Nextcloud workflow, you may need to run Nextcloud’s file scanning and indexing procedures so Memories can see them. External storage can make indexing slow, and the documented external-storage case disables video transcoding. Plan the location of large libraries before importing them.

Mobile access

An early-access Android client is mentioned, while automatic uploads can use the standard Nextcloud mobile applications. Confirm the current client status and background-upload behavior for your phone before relying on it as the only ingest path.

Choose Memories when

  • Nextcloud already handles your users, files and sharing.
  • You want photos alongside documents instead of another independent server stack.
  • You accept the extra work of previews, scans, indexing and companion applications.

Ente Photos: encryption-led design with a heavier self-hosting path

Ente’s repository documents a Docker Compose quick-start for running a self-hosted instance. Its security documentation describes an architecture in which photos and metadata are encrypted on the device before upload, with face recognition and search analysis performed locally. Those statements describe Ente’s documented design; they do not make an improperly secured server or an untested backup safe.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operational trade-offs

The project labels its sample deployment as a way to get started and recommends understanding the components before using it seriously. That signals a multi-service administration burden: you must understand the Compose stack, persistent volumes, updates, credentials and recovery process rather than treating it as a single gallery container.

Ente advises retaining plaintext backups until a backup strategy is in place. Keep readable originals and verify restoration before relying solely on encrypted storage. Losing the files needed to decrypt or recover a library can turn a privacy feature into permanent data loss.

Choose Ente when

  • Your priority is the project’s device-side encryption model and local analysis claims.
  • You are prepared to operate and update a multi-component deployment.
  • You can document recovery keys, client access and independent backups for your household.

Photoview: a focused option for RAW and metadata

Photoview’s project repository describes a self-hosted personal gallery with RAW-file support and EXIF parsing. That makes it worth considering when camera formats and metadata fidelity are the deciding criteria. The project material does not establish it as the best all-around replacement for a phone-backup service, so evaluate its ingest, sharing and mobile behavior against your own workflow.

How to compare the candidates

Decision axis Questions to answer Why it changes the choice
Privacy architecture Are originals and metadata readable on the server? Is encryption end-to-end or only at rest? Self-hosting and end-to-end encryption solve different threat models.
Phone workflow Is there a first-party app, a PWA, or a separate uploader? Does background operation work on your phone? An attractive gallery is useless if imports are manual and unreliable.
Existing infrastructure Can you run Docker, or do you already maintain Nextcloud? Adding a dependency may be easier than operating a second server, but only if your current host has capacity.
Formats and metadata Do you need RAW files, video transcoding, EXIF dates, GPS maps or face analysis? Indexing and processing can consume CPU, RAM and disk space.
Sharing and household use Which accounts, album permissions and external links are available in the current version? Sharing expands the attack surface and should be tested with a non-admin account.
Maintenance Who applies updates, watches failed containers, rotates credentials and replaces disks? The best app is the one you can keep patched and recover.
Recovery Where are originals, database data and encryption keys copied, and has a restore been rehearsed? A gallery without a tested recovery path is a single point of failure.

A privacy-first deployment checklist

  1. Inventory the source devices. List phones, cameras, removable cards and existing cloud copies. Decide which originals and metadata must remain intact.
  2. Select the host. A home server, a VPS, a managed server or a NAS can work depending on the app. A 2-bay NAS is an enabling category, not a requirement; confirm that the specific device meets the current software requirements and does not replace an independent backup.
  3. Use a dedicated administrator account. Do not share the initial admin login. Create ordinary user accounts for daily browsing and household members.
  4. Restrict network exposure. Prefer a private network or VPN for administration. If remote access is necessary, use HTTPS, a carefully configured reverse proxy and strong, unique credentials.
  5. Set storage boundaries. Keep originals, generated previews, databases and temporary transcodes in documented locations. Watch free space because indexing and video processing can grow the library.
  6. Import a test batch. Include a RAW file, a video, a motion photo and images from different time zones. Check EXIF dates, orientation, GPS handling and duplicate behavior.
  7. Configure uploads deliberately. Decide whether cellular data, background operation and automatic deletion from the phone are allowed. Never enable deletion until a server copy and a separate backup have been verified.
  8. Back up before opening access. Copy originals and required application data to a separate device or location. For encrypted systems, preserve recovery material with the backup.
  9. Patch on a schedule. Read the current project upgrade notes, back up first and keep a rollback path. Do not assume a container image update preserves every configuration change.
  10. Rehearse recovery. Restore a sample album to a clean location, verify metadata and confirm that another household member knows the recovery procedure.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Action
New files do not appear Indexing or file scanning has not run, especially after adding files outside the normal workflow Run the platform’s documented scan/index process, then inspect logs and permissions.
Uploads stop when the phone sleeps Battery optimization or background-data restrictions Allow background activity for the selected uploader, test on Wi-Fi and cellular separately, and confirm that the app can reconnect after a reboot.
Videos consume unexpected space Generated transcodes and previews Measure the generated-data directories, set retention or quality options where supported and leave headroom before importing more media.
Timeline dates are wrong Missing or incorrect EXIF timestamps, timezone conversion or camera clock errors Correct metadata at the source when possible, then re-index; keep an original copy before bulk edits.
External storage is very slow Remote filesystem latency or limited indexing support Test a local library, reduce concurrent processing and check the app’s documented external-storage limitations.
Restore fails after a disk loss Only the media files were copied, not the database, configuration or keys Document every component required by the chosen app and perform a complete restore test, not just a file copy.
Shared links expose too much Public-link permissions or an account with excessive rights Use least-privilege accounts, set expiration where available, and review active links regularly.

Which one should you install?

Pick Immich if automatic phone backup is the non-negotiable requirement and your host can meet its documented baseline of 6 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores. Pick PhotoPrism if browser-based indexing and search matter more than a built-in native uploader. Pick Memories or Nextcloud Photos when Nextcloud is already the foundation, with Memories providing the broader documented feature set. Pick Ente Photos when its device-side encryption architecture justifies the additional operational complexity. Pick Photoview for a narrower RAW-and-EXIF-focused gallery after confirming that its ingest and sharing workflow fits your devices.

Whichever application you choose, keep the server private by design, patch it, monitor storage, and prove that a separate backup can restore the originals. Those operating practices—not the gallery name alone—determine whether your pictures remain both private and recoverable.
