The best smart display depends on the assistant and devices already in your home. Choose an Alexa model if your routines and accessories are built around Alexa; choose a Google display if your home uses Google Home; consider an iPad if you need Apple Home controls plus a full tablet’s apps. For a kitchen shared by several people, a 15- or 21-inch wall display is easier to read than a compact counter unit. For a bedside table, the 5.5-inch class is more practical.
For video calls, prioritize a camera, auto-framing and a calling service your household actually uses. For recipes, prioritize screen size, viewing distance, voice-controlled timers and a stable counter or wall position. For smart-home control, check the exact model’s protocols and compatibility instead of assuming every display supports the same devices.

Start with the ecosystem, not the screen
Alexa households
An Echo Show makes the most sense when your home already has Alexa routines, compatible lights, cameras, plugs or sensors. You can ask for timers, lists, recipe steps and camera feeds using the same assistant that operates other Alexa devices. The exact smart-home hub and radio set varies by model, so check the specification for the generation you are buying. For example, Tom’s Guide reports Thread, Matter and Zigbee support for the Echo Show 8 (4th Gen); that should not be generalized to every Echo Show.

A Nest display is the natural fit when your routines and connected products are managed through Google Home. The Nest Hub Max adds a camera for calls and auto-framing, while the Nest Hub (2nd Gen) deliberately omits a camera. That distinction matters more than a small difference in display size if calls are a core requirement.

- Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
- Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
- See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
- See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.
Apple households
The 2025 iPad is not a dedicated smart display, but Tom’s Guide reports that it can serve as a Home app interface for supported HomeKit or Matter devices. It is worth considering when app flexibility, browsing and general tablet tasks matter as much as hands-free control. It does not provide the same always-ready, voice-first experience as a purpose-built display, so treat it as an alternative rather than a direct specification match.
Match screen size to the room
Bedside tables and desks: about 5 inches
The Echo Show 5 has a 5.5-inch display and a 2MP camera. It suits a nightstand or desk where you sit close to the screen, and Amazon positions it for video calls and viewing compatible cameras. Recipe text and timers viewed from several feet away are less comfortable on this size.
Countertops and desks: 8 to 10 inches
An 8- to 10-inch screen is the practical compromise for most kitchens. The Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) has an 8.7-inch display, while the Echo Show 10 has a 10.1-inch HD screen. The Google Nest Hub Max has a 10-inch touchscreen. These sizes leave counter space for food preparation while keeping text, ingredients and timers readable at normal standing distance. Measure the intended spot, including clearance around the device and any stand.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShared dashboards: 15 to 21 inches
The Echo Show 15 uses a full-HD 15.6-inch display, and the Echo Show 21 expands that to 21 inches. These are suited to a family calendar, to-do lists, recipes visible from across a kitchen and shared smart-home controls. The trade-off is footprint: a wall installation or a large, dedicated surface is more realistic than a crowded worktop. Amazon describes the Echo Show 21 as wall-mountable and says mounting equipment is included; still confirm what is in the regional box before installation.
Best smart displays for video calls
Echo Show 10: a strong Alexa counter choice
The Echo Show 10 combines a 10.1-inch HD screen with a 13MP auto-framing camera. Its documented kitchen uses include hands-free recipe steps, timers and lists, so it can handle a call without abandoning cooking tasks. Before buying, confirm that the calling service used by your family is supported on the device and that the camera’s placement gives a clear view of the people who will use it.

Echo Show 8 (4th Gen): smaller, high-resolution camera
The Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) has an 8.7-inch display and a 13MP camera, making it easier to place on a counter than the larger models. It is a sensible general-purpose Alexa candidate when calls and smart-home controls matter equally. Tom’s Guide reports that this generation does not have a physical camera shutter. If a hardware cover is important to you, that is a decisive privacy difference, not a minor accessory detail.
Echo Show 21: the large-screen call option
Amazon describes the Echo Show 21 as its largest display, with an auto-framing camera, Fire TV, smart-home controls and Wi-Fi 6E. The 21-inch panel can keep several people in view and remain readable across a room. Its fixed wall position means you should decide the mounting location before purchase: check power access, viewing height, glare and whether the camera points into a private area.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Echo Show 5: calls where space is scarce
The 2MP camera and 5.5-inch screen are adequate for a close desk or bedside call, but the small panel gives callers less room and makes group framing more difficult. Choose it for compactness, not for a kitchen where several people need to see the display.
Google Nest Hub Max: Google’s camera-equipped option
WIRED reports a 10-inch touchscreen, a 6.5MP camera, a 127-degree field of view and auto-framing for the Nest Hub Max. Those specifications make it the Google candidate to consider when on-device calls and a broad view are required. Availability and support status can vary by market, and the evidence here does not establish current official stock, so check Google’s local store and support information before treating it as a current purchase.
Nest Hub (2nd Gen): explicitly camera-less
The Nest Hub (2nd Gen) has no camera. That is useful for readers who want Google Home controls, recipes and a screen without an on-device lens, but it cannot perform the same video-call role as the Nest Hub Max or camera-equipped Echo models. Do not infer camera capability from the similar product name.

Camera checklist before you buy
- Confirm that the model has a camera and note its resolution; the documented examples range from 2MP on Echo Show 5 to 13MP on Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) and Echo Show 10.
- Look for auto-framing if people move around during calls. It is documented for Echo Show 10, Echo Show 21 and Nest Hub Max.
- Check the calling platform and whether every participant can join from their phone or computer.
- Check privacy controls. The Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) is reported to lack a physical shutter; the Nest Hub (2nd Gen) has no camera at all.
- Place the display at eye level or angle it toward the seating area. A high wall position can make faces appear from below, while a low counter position can be blocked by cookware.
Best smart displays for recipes and kitchen work
For a normal counter: Echo Show 8 or Echo Show 10
The Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) uses less counter area than the 10.1-inch Echo Show 10 while retaining a 13MP camera for calls. The Echo Show 10 gives recipe text and timers more room and adds a 13MP auto-framing camera. Amazon specifically describes hands-free recipe steps, timers and lists for the Echo Show 10. Choose the smaller unit when counter space is tight; choose the larger one when you stand farther away or share the cooking area.
For a shared family kitchen: Echo Show 15
The full-HD 15.6-inch screen is easier to read from several feet away and can act as a household calendar and to-do board. Fire TV and the integrated smart-home hub add non-cooking uses, but the size means you should plan its wall or counter location first. A wall-mounted dashboard can remain visible while the counter stays clear for preparation.
For maximum distance: Echo Show 21
The 21-inch screen is the strongest size-led option documented here. It can display recipes, schedules and controls in a shared room without requiring people to stand close. It is also the least forgiving of a poor installation: measure the wall, locate a suitable power outlet, and account for glare and viewing angles before committing.
For Google kitchens
The Nest Hub Max provides a 10-inch touchscreen and camera for calls, while the Nest Hub (2nd Gen) provides Google Home controls and recipes without a camera. Confirm that the recipe service you use is available on the exact model and in your region; recipe and streaming support can change by platform and device.
Kitchen placement checklist
- Keep the microphone and speaker clear of the extractor hood and other loud appliances.
- Place the screen where steam, splashes and direct heat are limited.
- Use a stand or wall mount that is made for the exact generation; compatibility varies, and Tom’s Guide notes that an Echo Show 8 stand is sold separately.
- Test readability from the chopping board, hob and sink before fixing a wall display permanently.
- Use voice commands for timers and list updates so you do not touch the screen with wet or food-covered hands.
Using a display to control a smart home
Verify protocols and device compatibility
“Smart-home hub” does not mean universal support. Compare the display’s supported protocols with the lights, locks, sensors and cameras you own. The Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) is reported to support Thread, Matter and Zigbee, but that combination is model-specific. For any other Echo Show or a Google display, confirm the exact specification and whether your device manufacturer supports the chosen platform.

- 99% sRGB color gamut - Immerse yourself in a world of brilliant color from HDR10 that helps enhance picture quality and up to 99% sRGB color gamut expression to make games visually pop.
Prioritize the controls you will actually use
- Lighting scenes and room-by-room brightness controls benefit from a screen because you can see the room or group name before tapping.
- Camera feeds are useful when the display is positioned in a kitchen or entryway, but check that the camera service works with the assistant.
- Thermostat, door-lock and alarm controls deserve extra confirmation of account linking, permissions and household-user access.
- Matter compatibility can simplify cross-platform pairing, but it does not guarantee that every advanced device feature appears in every app.
Build routines around the room
Use the display as a dashboard for the room where it lives. A kitchen routine might turn on lights, show a timer and open a shopping list; a hallway display might surface cameras and an away scene. Keep safety-critical actions, such as unlocking a door, behind the platform’s authentication and confirmation settings rather than relying on an unprotected tap.

How to choose and set up the right display
- List your existing ecosystem. Write down whether your lights, cameras, locks and routines are managed by Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home, then select a display that uses that platform.
- Define the primary room. Measure the available width, depth and wall area. Reserve about 5 inches for a compact bedside device, 8–10 inches for a counter compromise, or 15–21 inches for a shared dashboard, based on the documented screen classes.
- Decide whether calls are essential. Eliminate camera-less models if you need on-device video calls. If calls matter, compare camera resolution, auto-framing, field of view and privacy controls.
- Check the exact model generation. Features such as Thread, Matter, Zigbee, camera shutters and accessory fit can differ between generations. Do not rely on a retailer’s generic family name.
- Confirm services. Verify your calling provider, recipe service, streaming apps and camera brand on the manufacturer’s current support pages for your region.
- Plan power and mounting. A wall display needs a safe cable route and suitable mounting surface. A counter display needs a stable stand and enough clearance for ventilation and controls.
- Set privacy controls before linking accounts. Review microphone and camera switches, household voice recognition, calling permissions and which rooms can view camera feeds.
- Pair one device first. Add a light, camera or sensor, test its controls from the display, then build routines. This isolates compatibility problems before you migrate the entire home.
Privacy, placement and maintenance
A camera-equipped display should face the people who use it, not an open bedroom or a neighbor-facing window. Use the hardware camera switch or software control whenever a call is not expected, and explain the device’s behavior to everyone in the household. If a physical shutter is a requirement, avoid assuming that a camera resolution implies one; the Echo Show 8 (4th Gen), for example, is reported without a physical shutter.
Keep firmware and assistant apps updated through the manufacturer’s normal process, and periodically remove devices or household members who no longer need access. When you move a display, revisit camera framing, microphone pickup and smart-home permissions. For wall-mounted units, inspect the mount and cable strain after installation rather than treating the first setup as permanent.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Buying by display size alone
A large panel cannot compensate for an incompatible assistant or a missing camera. Start with ecosystem and calling requirements, then select the largest screen your room can support.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming all models share the same radios
Protocol support is model-specific. Confirm Thread, Matter or Zigbee on the exact product page and check that your device is supported in the platform’s app.

Putting a small display in a large kitchen
A 5.5-inch panel may be comfortable beside a bed but difficult to read from a stove. Move to the 8–10-inch class for a typical counter, or 15–21 inches for a shared wall dashboard.
Ignoring camera privacy
Check for a physical shutter or switch before purchase. If you prefer no camera, the Nest Hub (2nd Gen) is explicitly camera-less; do not confuse it with the camera-equipped Nest Hub Max.
Mounting before testing the view
Temporarily place the display at the intended height and call someone from the room. Confirm faces, recipe readability, glare and voice pickup before drilling holes or routing a cable.
Bottom line
Choose the Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) for a compact Alexa kitchen that needs calls and connected-home control, the Echo Show 10 when a larger counter screen and auto-framing matter, and the Echo Show 15 or 21 when a family dashboard deserves wall-scale readability. Choose the Nest Hub Max for a Google setup that needs a camera, or the Nest Hub (2nd Gen) when Google controls and recipes are wanted without one. The right “best” display is the one that matches your assistant, room and privacy expectations before its screen size or feature list.
