If you are replacing Selenium to automate website screenshots, start with Playwright when you need multiple browser engines or visual-regression checks, and consider Puppeteer for direct page and element captures in a code-controlled workflow. If you would rather send an HTTP request than operate a browser, compare hosted services—starting with ScreenshotNeo, which removes common consent banners and charges only for clean shots, alongside Browserless and ScreenshotOne. The right Selenium alternative for website screenshots depends on the control you need, how much browser infrastructure you want to manage, and whether your target sites permit automated access.
Which Selenium alternative fits your screenshot workflow?
| Option | Best fit | What the documentation establishes | Consider before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | One-request captures, including workflows where clean output and avoiding browser operations matter | One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture. Only clean shots are billed. | Review the API documentation for the options your capture needs. |
| Playwright | Multi-engine screenshot automation and visual regression checks | Chromium, WebKit, and Firefox; page screenshots, full-page capture, and test-runner screenshot assertions. | Keep the baseline and screenshot execution environment consistent. |
| Puppeteer | Direct page or selected-element captures from code | Documents both page and element screenshot methods. | The screenshot guide alone does not establish cross-browser coverage. |
| Browserless | Managed screenshot requests or browser infrastructure | REST screenshot endpoint accepts a URL or raw HTML, Puppeteer-style options, and can return PNG, JPEG, or WebP. | Bot defenses may result in blank images, CAPTCHA pages, or access-denied output. |
| ScreenshotOne | A dedicated hosted screenshot API | GET and POST request patterns, URL or HTML input, and rendering options. | Check its current documentation for the exact options and terms you need. |
| Urlbox | Another hosted service to evaluate for full-page capture | Its documentation describes a full_page option and scrolling before capture by default. |
The available documentation establishes only this narrow capability; investigate other requirements directly. |
These are capability-based choices, not a speed, reliability, or price ranking. The vendor documentation reviewed does not establish a fair comparative benchmark or current cross-provider price winner.
Playwright: choose it for browser coverage and visual checks
Playwright is a strong starting point when screenshot output is part of a browser test suite or needs to be checked across browser engines. Its documentation covers Chromium, WebKit, and Firefox, and its Page API supports screenshots, including full-page capture. For visual regression, the Playwright test runner offers toHaveScreenshot() assertions.

When it fits
- You need to exercise more than one browser engine.
- You want screenshot assertions integrated with automated tests.
- You need browser-level control over navigation and the page state before capture.
Keep screenshot baselines reproducible
Playwright cautions that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in a consistent environment, and pin relevant browser and runtime versions where your workflow allows. A mismatch can reflect an environment change rather than a website regression. See the visual comparison guidance.
Puppeteer: choose it for direct page and element captures
Puppeteer’s screenshot guide documents Page.screenshot() for a page and ElementHandle.screenshot() for a selected element. It is a straightforward fit when your existing code and browser requirements align with Puppeteer and you want capture calls inside your own script.

Use the official screenshot guide to adapt navigation and capture to your application. Do not infer multi-engine support from the screenshot methods alone; establish that separately against current browser documentation if engine coverage is a requirement.
Hosted screenshot APIs: send a request instead of operating a browser
A hosted API can avoid running and maintaining your own browser process for each capture. This is useful for a service that needs a screenshot from a URL or HTML and does not require the same degree of in-process browser control. Compare the required input, output format, rendering options, target-site behavior, authentication, and operating terms before moving a Selenium workflow.
Recommended Free Tools
ScreenshotNeo
ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try when you want a simple capture request and clean output: it accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI-agent clients.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. The example below captures Stripe as WebP; replace the target URL with the page you are authorized to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for supported parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo also accepts the parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can ease migration. Its 63 options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF settings, HTML/CSS capture, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector hiding, wait conditions, request and resource blocking, custom headers and cookies, user agent and authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture, usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Confirm exact parameter behavior in the docs before porting existing Selenium settings.

Browserless
Browserless documents a POST /screenshot REST endpoint authenticated with an account token. It accepts a URL or raw HTML, Puppeteer-style screenshot options, and supports PNG, JPEG, or WebP. Its REST overview presents screenshot work as a single HTTP request, so it can fit teams that do not want to manage browser infrastructure for each capture. See the screenshot endpoint and REST API overview.
Automation may be blocked by a target site: Browserless troubleshooting notes that blank images, CAPTCHA pages, or access-denied output can indicate bot defenses. Treat this as a target-site limitation, not as evidence that a particular configuration will bypass it.
ScreenshotOne
ScreenshotOne documents both GET and POST request patterns, URL and HTML input, and rendering customization. Its getting-started guide recommends HTTPS. Check the getting-started guide and options reference for current integration details; do not assume a specific feature or price without checking its current documentation.

Urlbox
Urlbox is another hosted option to investigate if full-page capture is central to your workflow. 1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to choose and migrate from Selenium
- Write down what Selenium actually does. Record target URLs, authentication, browser engine, viewport, full-page or element capture, wait behavior, output format, and any interactions required before taking the shot.
- Choose the execution model. Use Playwright or Puppeteer when your workflow needs browser control in code; consider a hosted API when request-based capture is sufficient and you prefer not to operate browser infrastructure.
- Match the capture behavior. Verify that the alternative supports your page or HTML input, output format, selector or full-page needs, and wait conditions. For a hosted service, test target-site restrictions and credential handling.
- Stabilize visual comparisons. If screenshots are test baselines, generate and compare them in the same environment. Control browser version, operating system, settings, and headless configuration as far as practical.
- Validate representative pages. Include pages with lazy-loaded images, consent dialogs, dynamic content, authentication, and long scroll lengths if those occur in production. Compare output and failure behavior before retiring Selenium.
- Track costs and outcomes. For a managed API, check the provider’s current plan and billing definitions. For ScreenshotNeo, inspect the response’s
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedheaders; failed and cached outcomes are not billed under its stated billing behavior.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can capture a page with one request. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the API documentation for options and response details, then sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
Common migration problems and fixes
The screenshot is blank, shows a CAPTCHA, or says access is denied
The target may be blocking automated traffic. Browserless specifically documents these as possible bot-defense outcomes. Check the site’s automation policy and your authorization to capture it; changing screenshot code does not guarantee access.
Visual tests fail after an environment change
Compare the screenshot environment with the baseline generator. Differences in OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode can change rendering. Restore a consistent environment before treating the difference as an application defect.

A hosted API does not reproduce a Selenium interaction
Inventory every action that occurs before capture, such as login, clicking a control, waiting for an element, or setting headers and cookies. Confirm the provider supports the necessary option and input flow. If the workflow depends on complex browser interactions, a code-controlled Playwright or Puppeteer setup may fit better.
A full-page shot omits late-loading content
Check the target page’s lazy-loading behavior and the provider’s documented full-page and wait options. Test long pages and dynamic content rather than assuming that scrolling and capturing happen identically across tools.
Migration raises a cost or reliability question
There is no fair comparative price or performance winner established by the cited vendor pages. Compare current plan terms and test the same representative URLs, output formats, and failure cases in your own environment before committing.
FAQ
Can I use an API instead of Selenium for screenshots?
Yes. Browserless, ScreenshotOne, and ScreenshotNeo document hosted screenshot request workflows. They can replace browser operation for suitable capture jobs, but verify that the required interactions, waits, and site access are supported.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which tool is best for visual regression testing?
Playwright is the clearest fit among these options when you want screenshot assertions in a test runner and browser-engine coverage. Keep screenshot baselines tied to a consistent execution environment.
Which option captures a single element?
Puppeteer explicitly documents element capture through ElementHandle.screenshot(); Playwright and hosted services should be checked against their current documentation for the selector-based behavior your workflow requires.
