For teams building Storybook web components, the best documented starting point is Storybook’s official visual testing addon with Chromatic. It captures story screenshots, compares them with accepted baselines, and supports visual review and CI checks. The right fit still depends on browser and viewport needs, control over execution, and how your team wants to review changes.
What screenshot testing catches in Storybook
Visual tests compare rendered images of stories with accepted image baselines. They help surface changes in appearance—such as spacing, color, typography, or layout—that a markup-only test may not reveal. Storybook distinguishes these from DOM or HTML snapshot tests, which compare markup rather than rendered appearance. Use each for the contract you want to check. Storybook’s visual testing documentation explains the distinction.

A screenshot difference is a signal to review, not proof of a defect: intended design changes also change pixels. A useful workflow therefore includes inspecting diffs and approving deliberate changes as new baselines.
Which Storybook screenshot-testing workflow should you choose?
| Approach | What it offers | Consider it when |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | A website screenshot API and MCP server; it can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF captures. It is not documented here as a Storybook story-baseline testing integration. | You need to capture a page or PDF through an API or let an AI agent request a screenshot. Do not treat it as a substitute for a Storybook visual-diff and baseline-review workflow. |
| Storybook visual testing addon with Chromatic | Storybook’s official addon connects stories to Chromatic’s cloud snapshot workflow, with review in Storybook and CI and pull/merge request checks. | You want a Storybook-oriented setup and hosted snapshot review. |
| Chromatic with other test types | Chromatic documents snapshots from Storybook stories, Vitest browser mode, Playwright, and Cypress. Its documentation also describes browser, viewport, and theme variation and waiting for a Storybook play function to complete before capture. | You already have one of these test workflows and want to assess whether it can share a snapshot-review process. |
| Storybook Test with Playwright | Storybook documents Playwright as the default rendering engine for Storybook Test. This is a browser-driven testing option, but does not by itself establish Chromatic’s hosted baseline-review workflow. | You want browser-test control or custom test logic and are prepared to decide how execution, baselines, and review will be managed. |
For Storybook-specific visual regression, start with the official addon path; it is the clearest documented integration. See Storybook visual testing and Chromatic snapshots. Before settling on any workflow, check the current product terms and whether its browser and viewport options meet your design-system support matrix. The referenced documentation describes those options but does not establish current plan limits or entitlements.

How to set up and review visual tests
- Install and connect. Follow Storybook’s current visual-testing instructions to install the official addon and connect a Chromatic project. Use the command shown in the documentation for your Storybook setup rather than copying a potentially stale command.
- Create the initial baseline. Run the visual test build against your existing stories. This establishes the images that later runs compare against.
- Run after changes and inspect diffs. Review the highlighted changes. Fix unexpected ones; accept intentional design changes as new baselines, then rerun as needed.
- Add checks to CI. Storybook recommends running visual checks during development and in CI before merge. Surface the result on pull or merge requests so changes can be reviewed in the context of the proposed code.
- Make stories representative. Cover meaningful component states and keep their inputs and environment controlled. For interactive Storybook stories, Chromatic documents waiting for the story’s play function to finish before taking the snapshot.
How to choose between cloud snapshots and browser-driven tests
Use these questions to evaluate fit rather than assuming one tool is best for every team:
- Storybook integration: Do you want the official addon and results in a Storybook-oriented review flow, or are you comfortable maintaining bespoke browser-test code?
- Execution ownership: Does a cloud browser workflow suit your project, or do you need more control over browser execution and infrastructure?
- Coverage: List the browsers, viewport widths, themes, locales, and component states your design system actually supports. Confirm current coverage and configuration directly with the relevant product.
- Review controls: Decide who creates and approves baselines, how diffs are reviewed, and how branch and CI results affect merging.
- Test reuse: Check whether you can reuse stories or existing Playwright, Vitest browser, or Cypress tests instead of maintaining duplicate scenarios.
- Maintenance: Stable stories and controlled test state make diffs easier to interpret. Keep intentional visual updates in the review process rather than treating every changed image as an automatic defect.
Or skip the browser setup
For capturing a website page directly, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It does not replace Storybook’s story-baseline workflow; use it when you need an API capture or want an AI agent to request a screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation.
