That advice is specific to old film finish on suitable wood—not a guarantee that sanding will remove every penetrating stain or suit every surface. For old paint of uncertain age or composition, use a safer alternative to sanding because the paint may contain lead.
Which sander should you use for an old finish?
| Option | Best-supported use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Belt sander | Rapidly removing old film finish from suitable, broad, flat wood. WOOD Magazine’s method is an 80- or 100-grit belt at about half maximum speed. | It removes material aggressively. Poor control or an unsuitable workpiece can lead to damage; it is not a universal solution for stains or finishes. |
| Random-orbit sander | Woodworking and refinishing where a less aggressive approach or compatible dust extraction is useful. | The available sources do not establish that it removes old finish as quickly as a belt sander. Its swirls can show through stain or dye. |
| Chemical stripper | WOOD Magazine recommends stripping rather than sanding old painted finishes that should be treated as potentially lead-containing. | Suitability depends on the finish and substrate. Follow the product directions and local requirements. |
There is no controlled head-to-head test in the cited sources, so these options should not be read as a tested ranking of models. Match the method to the workpiece’s size and flatness, the finish or paint, the level of control you need, and available dust collection and abrasives. WOOD Magazine’s power sander guide describes belt sanders as aggressive tools for rapid material removal.

How to remove an old film finish with a belt sander
- Check the coating first. If it is old paint of uncertain age or composition, do not sand it; see the paint-safety guidance below.
- Confirm the surface suits the tool. A belt sander’s aggressive action is best reserved for suitable broad, flat wood—not delicate or irregular work where material removal is hard to control.
- Fit an 80- or 100-grit belt. For removing old film finish, WOOD Magazine recommends one of these grits and running the sander at about half its maximum speed. Its finish-removal guidance does not establish that this method works for every stain, finish, or wood species.
- Work with control and check progress. The source recommendation is not a substitute for following your sander’s manual or adjusting technique to the workpiece. Stop and inspect often enough to avoid removing more wood than intended.
- Switch tools for finishing. WOOD Magazine places 60–120 grit in rough-sanding territory and recommends changing to a finishing tool afterward. Continue with a suitable finer progression for the finish you plan to apply.
What if the finish is a stain, not a film?
The specific fast-removal recommendation concerns an old film finish. It does not establish that sanding quickly removes penetrating stains. Sanding also affects how color takes: finer sanding can leave fewer openings for pigment to lodge, making a pigmented stain appear lighter. Test the planned sanding and stain on an offcut or hidden area if color matters; results vary with the wood and stain formulation. WOOD Magazine explains the relationship between sanding and pigmented-stain color.
How to prepare the surface for a new finish
After removing the old coating, use a finer sanding progression appropriate to the new finish and inspect for scratches. WOOD Magazine says bare-wood finish sanding typically reaches 220 grit before dust removal; that is a general guideline, not a guarantee for every project. Its finish-sanding guide covers the typical endpoint and cleaning the surface.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL - With a 2.8 amp motor and 13,000 orbits per minute, it's able to deliver a smooth performance over a variety of sanding applications.
- EASY TO CLEAN DUST CONTAINER - The X-flow dust collector uses cyclone force to collect dust in it's easy-to-empty transparent container.
- SPEED CONTROL - Variable speed control provides the right amount of power and control across different materials.
- LOW VIBRATION - Through its ergonomic design and a soft rubber grip your hand stays comfortable while counterweight balance reduces hand fatigue from vibration. All so that you can work longer.
- SAND IN TIGHT PLACES - With a compact size and ergonomic design This sander can get into tight spaces easily and maximizes user control.
A random-orbit sander can leave swirl marks that become visible after stain or dye is applied. Inspect the wood under suitable light before applying color. If needed, hand-sand with the grain at the final grit; no machine alone guarantees a swirl-free stained surface. WOOD Magazine’s sander guide discusses finishing considerations, including the risk of visible swirls.
When sanding paint is the wrong choice
For old painted finishes of unknown origin, WOOD Magazine advises treating the paint as though it contains lead and using chemical stripping instead of sanding. It also recommends respiratory protection, ventilation, and skin protection. DEWALT’s instruction manual likewise advises minimizing dust when removing paint and describes respiratory and containment precautions. These sources do not replace local lead-paint rules or professional advice.
Rank #2
- 3-Amp motor spins the pad at 8,000 - 12,000 OPM
- Separate counterweight design reduces vibration for improved comfort
- Improved dust-sealed switch protects against dust ingestion for longer switch life
- Dust port is designed to fit directly to the DWV010 or DWV012 dust collectors
- Shorter height allows the user to get closer to the workpiece
Read the instructions for the sander, stripper, and protective equipment you use. Dust collection can help manage sanding dust, but performance depends on compatibility and setup; do not assume that an arbitrary vacuum connection captures dust to the same degree as a tested system.
How to interpret sander performance claims
Manufacturer figures are specific to the tool and test conditions, not a general measure of what any sander will achieve. For example, DEWALT’s page for its 20V XR 6-inch random-orbit sander states up to 95% dust collection when used with a compatible DEWALT extractor and says the tool can sand up to 200 square feet under its stated battery and test conditions. Those figures do not establish that the model removes old finish as quickly as a belt sander, or that another tool or extraction setup will match them. See DEWALT’s model-specific features and conditions.
