There is no single best running watch for every runner. The Garmin Forerunner 570 is a strong all-around choice for training tools, the COROS PACE 4 is a value-oriented alternative, and the Apple Watch Series 11 suits iPhone owners who put smartwatch features and ecosystem integration first. For a first 5K, pace, distance, clear data and simple controls may be enough; marathon training makes GPS-mode battery life, workout support, comfort and pacing tools more consequential.

Which running watch is best for a 5K and marathon training?

TechRadar’s running-watch guide puts the choice plainly: “Ultimately, there’s no universal winner.” The models below reflect published editorial recommendations, not a head-to-head test conducted for this article. Match the watch to your training needs, phone and charging habits rather than treating any ranking as an objective category win.

Runner priority Model to consider Why it may fit Important qualification
Broad training support Garmin Forerunner 570 The5krunner highlights its workout and training features, including structured workouts, daily suggestions, recovery time and race predictions. The5krunner reports 18 hours of GPS runtime; actual runtime depends on settings and configuration.
Value and low weight COROS PACE 4 TechRadar and the5krunner describe it as a lightweight, long-battery alternative, with an AMOLED display and running-focused tools. Check current availability and pricing. TechRadar notes that the older PACE 3 may be a better buy when discounted.
Smartwatch and iPhone ecosystem Apple Watch Series 11 The5krunner positions it for iPhone owners who value ecosystem depth. The5krunner reports up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode only; do not assume that runtime in other modes.
Garmin platform at a lower tier Garmin Forerunner 70 TechRadar recommends it for runners who want Garmin’s training platform without flagship expense, and includes it among beginner options. It lacks some higher-end features; older comparisons are not a current official specification sheet.
Polar training and recovery tools Polar Vantage M3 The5krunner identifies it as its leading Polar running option, citing dual-frequency GPS, running power and Polar training and recovery features. Compare its current feature set and availability against your specific route and training needs.

What a 5K runner actually needs

For a first 5K or regular short runs, prioritize reliable pace and distance recording, a display you can read while moving, and controls that feel straightforward. Maps, extensive recovery metrics and ultra-distance battery capacity may not improve your experience enough to justify paying for them.

  • GPS and pace: Decide whether basic distance and pace are sufficient or whether you need more detailed route options.
  • Readability and controls: Consider whether you prefer touch controls, physical buttons, or both, especially when you are running in rain or want to make changes without stopping.
  • Comfort: A watch that feels comfortable on everyday runs is more likely to suit regular training.
  • Phone fit: Check that the watch supports your phone and the smart features you actually use.

TechRadar recommends the Forerunner 70 and COROS PACE 3 alongside each other for beginners. The PACE 3 is an older alternative, so compare its current price and availability with the PACE 4 rather than assuming the newer model is automatically better value.

What changes when you train for a marathon

Long training sessions make battery estimates, workout guidance and comfort more important than they are for a short 5K. Before choosing, compare your expected time on course with the watch’s stated runtime in the GPS mode you plan to use. Leave margin for display and GPS settings, incidental use, and battery aging; a headline smartwatch-mode figure is not a substitute for a GPS-workout estimate.

Battery: compare the mode, not just the biggest number

The5krunner reports 18 hours of GPS battery life for the Garmin Forerunner 570 and considers that sufficient margin for marathon runners. That is the publication’s assessment, not a guarantee for every configuration or runner. The5krunner also reports up to 38 hours for Apple Watch Series 11 in Low Power Mode; that figure applies to the named mode and should not be generalized to other settings. Confirm the runtime for the specific GPS and display configuration you expect to use.

Workouts and pacing

Structured workouts and pacing support can make a marathon build easier to follow. The5krunner lists structured workouts, daily workout suggestions, race predictions, acute load, training readiness and recovery time among the Forerunner 570’s features. These are tools to inform training, not guarantees of a particular race result.

Fit and usability over long sessions

Try to assess comfort, display readability and button use as part of the marathon decision, not as an afterthought. A feature-rich watch is less useful if it is uncomfortable over long runs or difficult to read and operate at your intended pace.

How the leading options differ

Garmin Forerunner 570: a training-focused all-rounder

The5krunner names the Forerunner 570 its pick for most runners in its October 2026 guide. Its cited strengths include training readiness, acute load, recovery time, race predictions, daily workout suggestions, structured workouts and pacing support. Treat that as a reviewer’s recommendation for runners who want a deeper training toolkit, not as proof that it is the best fit for every budget or phone ecosystem.

COROS PACE 4: a value-oriented alternative

TechRadar describes the PACE 4 as a refinement of the PACE formula with an AMOLED display and longer battery life, while the5krunner highlights its light weight, running power support and track mode. Those assessments make it worth considering if you want a running-first watch and value battery life and low weight. Platform preferences still matter, and current model availability and pricing can change.

Apple Watch Series 11: for iPhone-first smartwatch users

The5krunner positions Series 11 for runners who prioritize Apple ecosystem features. Its reported battery figure is up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode, so check whether your preferred mode and settings suit your planned training and race duration. It is not a like-for-like choice for someone whose main requirement is a running watch’s GPS-workout endurance.

Other options: Forerunner 70 and Polar Vantage M3

The Forerunner 70 is a lower-tier way into Garmin’s training platform according to TechRadar, though it omits some higher-end features. For runners interested in Polar’s training and recovery approach, the5krunner points to the Vantage M3 and cites dual-frequency GPS and running power support. Compare the exact features you need rather than inferring a full specification from these editorial descriptions.

Check these details before buying

  1. Set your budget and priorities. Decide whether you value a focused running tool, extensive coaching and recovery metrics, or broader smartwatch features most.
  2. Check GPS-mode runtime. Use the specific GPS and display mode you expect to run with, then compare its estimate with your longest training session and expected marathon time.
  3. Match route features to your runs. If you rely on route guidance or maps, verify the model’s relevant navigation capability; a 5K runner who follows familiar routes may not need it.
  4. Review workouts and data needs. Check whether the watch supports the structured workouts, pacing guidance and training metrics you will use.
  5. Confirm phone and accessory compatibility. Verify compatibility for your phone and any heart-rate sensor or other accessory before purchase.
  6. Check the current listing. Model availability, exact variants and prices can change, so confirm the details with the seller and manufacturer for your region.

Is a chest strap necessary?

No. A chest strap is an optional add-on for runners who prioritize precise heart-rate-zone work. Check that the strap is compatible with the watch and that any model-specific analytics you want actually support it. Runner’s World discusses Garmin HRM 600 in connection with some Forerunner 970 analytics; that does not make it a requirement for every watch or runner.
