For most travel and everyday backup needs, the Samsung T7 Shield is the best starting point: its 10Gbps USB connection is practical for routine transfers, and Samsung rates it IP65 for dust and water resistance and for drops up to 3 meters. If you have a compatible USB4 computer and regularly move very large files, the LaCie Rugged SSD4 or SanDisk Extreme PRO with USB4 can be much faster. For high capacity, consider the Crucial X10, but check that your computer supports its faster interface.
Which rugged portable SSD should you buy?
Choose based on your computer’s data interface, the size of the files you move, the capacity you need, and the protection claims that matter for your travel. A USB-C plug does not mean a drive can use USB at 20Gbps or USB4: the host port and cable must support the faster interface too.

| Drive | Best fit | Interface and protection claims | Independent benchmark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung T7 Shield | Everyday backups and travel | USB 3.2 Gen 2, 10Gbps. Samsung lists IP65 dust and water resistance and drop resistance up to 3 meters. | StorageReview measured the 4TB model at 893.8 MB/s read and 936.5 MB/s write in Blackmagic Disk Speed Test. StorageReview, 2026. |
| LaCie Rugged SSD4 | Premium USB4 travel option | USB4, 40Gbps; StorageReview reports IP54 and 3m drop resistance. Confirm your host supports USB4. | StorageReview measured 3,183.1 MB/s read and 3,185.4 MB/s write in Blackmagic testing. StorageReview, 2026. |
| Crucial X10 | High capacity | USB 3.2 Gen 2×2; listed up to 8TB, IP65 and 3m drop protection. Confirm host compatibility with the faster connection. | StorageReview measured 1,784.2 MB/s read and 1,801.4 MB/s write in Blackmagic testing. StorageReview, 2026. |
| SanDisk Extreme PRO with USB4 | Fast USB4 alternative | USB4 model; do not confuse it with the distinct 2023 USB 3.2 datasheet. Check the exact generation and host compatibility. | StorageReview measured 3,172.3 MB/s read and 2,863.6 MB/s write in Blackmagic testing. TechRepublic reports manufacturer ratings up to 3,800/3,700 MB/s; Tom’s Hardware testing noted sustained writes fell after several minutes. StorageReview, 2026; TechRepublic, 2026. |
The benchmark numbers are reported lab measurements, not guaranteed speeds. StorageReview’s Blackmagic results are useful for comparing these tested models under that test, but real transfer rates vary with the computer, port, cable, workload and sustained-write behavior. Peak manufacturer figures and independent test results are not interchangeable.

The T7 Shield combines a 10Gbps interface with manufacturer-listed IP65 protection and drop resistance up to 3 meters, making it a sensible balance for carrying documents, photos and routine backups. StorageReview lists 1TB, 2TB and 4TB options in its reviewed roundup. Its measured 4TB result—893.8 MB/s read and 936.5 MB/s write in Blackmagic Disk Speed Test—is a benchmark for that model and test, not a speed promise for every setup.

- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
Samsung’s Portable SSD brochure says, “Damage caused by drop is not covered under warranty.” A drop-resistance specification is therefore not the same as accidental-damage warranty coverage. IP and drop ratings describe bounded protection claims, not immunity from every fall, spill or travel mishap. Samsung Portable SSD brochure, 2025.
When a faster interface is worth paying for
Choose USB4 for compatible high-throughput work
The LaCie Rugged SSD4 and SanDisk Extreme PRO with USB4 are the shortlist’s faster options for systems that support USB4. StorageReview’s Blackmagic measurements were about 3,183/3,185 MB/s for the LaCie and 3,172/2,864 MB/s for the SanDisk, read/write respectively. Those results illustrate potential in the reported test; they do not mean every USB-C computer will achieve those rates.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Check the port, not just the connector
USB-C describes the physical connector shape, not a data rate. A USB-C host port may not support USB4 or USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, and using a faster drive on a slower-compatible port can limit performance. Verify the computer’s specifications and use a suitable cable before selecting a premium interface.

If you mainly copy everyday files or run periodic backups, a well-matched 10Gbps drive may be sufficient. The extra throughput of USB4 matters most when the host supports it and the workload involves substantial transfers. Sustained writes can also differ from short benchmark bursts; Tom’s Hardware reported that the SanDisk USB4 model’s writes fell after several minutes.

How to choose capacity and protection
- Estimate your working set: Allow room for the files you intend to carry or back up, plus future growth. The reviewed roundup lists the T7 Shield in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB; StorageReview lists the Crucial X10 up to 8TB.
- Read the exact protection rating: Samsung lists IP65 and up to 3m drop resistance for the T7 Shield; StorageReview reports IP54 and 3m drop resistance for the LaCie Rugged SSD4; the Crucial X10 is listed with IP65 and 3m drop protection. These are not directly interchangeable guarantees.
- Confirm the product generation: SanDisk’s USB4 model is distinct from its 2023 USB 3.2 datasheet. Check the exact model before comparing its interface or specifications.
- Compare ownership details before purchase: Check current availability, price, warranty terms, size and weight, and the manufacturer’s precise protection wording for the specific variant. Prices in the 2026 TechRepublic comparison were accurate at publication and may change.
How to use a portable SSD safely for backups
A rugged drive is still a portable object that can be lost, stolen or damaged. Keep irreplaceable files in another location rather than treating one SSD as the only copy. A second drive stored separately or a separate backup destination reduces the risk that one incident takes out both the original and its only backup.
No comparable longitudinal failure-rate evidence establishes that one of these models is the most reliable. The measurements here support comparison of reported speed and stated protection, not a ranking by long-term failure risk.
