If you want a fantasy party RPG with companions and consequential choices, start with Pillars of Eternity. For a more tactical, turn-based take on party relationships and player choice, choose Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition. Both are strong Dragon Age alternatives, but neither game’s current Steam Deck compatibility rating is established here; check its live Steam listing before you buy.
What makes an RPG feel like Dragon Age?
“Like Dragon Age” is a mix of preferences, not one combat system. You might be looking for a fantasy setting, a customizable or authored hero, companions, story choices that matter, and party-based combat. The two closest picks below share much of that bundle, but play very differently: Pillars of Eternity uses real-time-with-pause combat, while Divinity: Original Sin 2 is turn-based.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition: best for turn-based tactics
Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition on Steam is a better fit if you want tactical, turn-based battles rather than Dragon Age’s real-time-with-pause tradition. Larian Studios’ listing emphasizes party play, companion relationships, exploration, consequential decisions, and battles where positioning and planning matter. It supports solo play and cooperative play, and the Windows requirements list 60 GB of storage.
The game is not an interchangeable substitute for Pillars of Eternity: choose it for turn-based encounters and companion bonds. Its Steam page does not, by itself, confirm a current Deck compatibility rating.

How the alternatives compare
| What you want | Start with | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Fantasy party combat with real-time pausing | Pillars of Eternity | Steam tags it for real-time-with-pause combat, and its description centers on companions and choices. |
| Tactical, turn-based combat and companion relationships | Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition | Larian’s listing emphasizes party play, relationships, choices, and turn-based battles. |
| Dragon Age’s own origins, choices, and combat style | Dragon Age: Origins | The Steam description identifies a customizable hero, six origin stories, reactive choices, and real-time-with-pause combat. |
| Medieval role-playing sandbox and large battles | Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord | Its store description focuses on diplomacy, trade, armies, and real-time battles rather than companion-led storytelling. |
Is Dragon Age: Origins worth considering?
Dragon Age: Origins on Steam is the reference point if you want the series itself: its listing describes a customizable hero, six origin stories, reactive choices, and real-time-with-pause combat. Steam identifies BioWare as developer and Electronic Arts as publisher. The page says the base game is no longer available separately on Steam and shows an Ultimate Edition listing; availability and regional offers can change. An older PC release or its availability on Steam does not establish how it currently runs on Steam Deck.
When Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is a better fit
Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is a looser match, not a companion-story substitute. Consider it if you want a medieval sandbox built around diplomacy, trading, commanding armies, and taking part in real-time battles. The official store description does not foreground the companion-centered narrative that makes the other recommendations closer to Dragon Age.

Valve uses four labels: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Verified means a game works well out of the box; Playable means it may require manual adjustment. Valve’s criteria include controller input, display readability, setup, and system support. Ratings and compatibility details are shown on individual reviewed titles in the Steam store or library, and Valve says its review is ongoing. See Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility guide.
