There is no source-backed universal preset or guaranteed FPS gain. Start with your current resolution, adjust one option at a time, and judge changes in comparable gameplay scenes.
What changed in the latest documented update?
The version 1.3.9 update, dated June 3, 2025, said it focused on memory optimization across platforms and expected performance improvements, especially on low-end PCs and consoles. That is the developer’s stated intent, not a quantified benchmark or a promise of a particular frame rate. The notes also said anti-aliasing would function correctly rather than being forced on, and that SSAO, Sobel Lighting, and Gamma Boost should function correctly. Advice based on earlier behavior may therefore no longer apply. Read the version 1.3.9 update notes.

PCGamingWiki lists the following relevant controls. The available options do not establish which one gives the largest performance improvement or is clearest for every player. See the PC technical reference.

How to make Risk of Rain 2 run smoother
- Keep a baseline. Note your current resolution, display mode, and settings. Play a representative scene and observe whether the problem is low or inconsistent frame delivery, stuttering, or something else.
- Change one setting. If performance is poor, adjust a single visual option, then revisit a similar kind of scene. This helps you tell whether the change made a noticeable difference on your PC; it is a troubleshooting method, not a tested performance result.
- Check the result before changing more. If the change does not help, restore it and try a different option. Avoid changing several controls at once, because then you cannot tell which one affected the experience.
- Try a sustainable frame-rate cap. Choose among 30, 60, 120, or unlimited based on what your system can maintain in the scenes you play. A cap is a practical choice to test, not a documented optimum.
- Consider VSync only in response to your display. Toggle it and compare the result if you are troubleshooting image presentation. Do not assume it will raise performance.
Steam’s Windows minimum and recommended hardware requirements can help you check whether your PC meets the listed specifications, but they do not guarantee a particular FPS at your resolution, with your settings, or during a late-game run. Check the Steam listing and Windows requirements.
How to improve readability without guessing
Preserve useful detail first
Do not lower resolution automatically if text, characters, or effects are already difficult to distinguish. First inspect the game at your current resolution and change only what appears to be causing the issue.

Judge anti-aliasing on your screen
Compare Off, FXAA, and SMAA in a scene with edges or details you want to read clearly. The documented options confirm what is available, not which setting will look best on your display or affect performance most.

FOV is a visibility and presentation preference, not a proven universal performance setting. Adjust it to suit how much of the scene you want in view, then decide whether the result remains comfortable to read during play.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The cited sources document PC options and the version 1.3.9 update, but do not provide controlled comparisons of individual graphics settings, clarity tests across displays, or hardware-specific winning presets. Steam’s requirements are specifications, not an FPS study. Your hardware, resolution, and preferences determine the useful trade-off between image detail and frame consistency.
The documented options are software settings; these sources do not show that an accessory or hardware upgrade is necessary to apply them. Console players should consult the settings available in their own version rather than assume the PC menu is identical.
