If you want Reddit-style topic forums with posts, votes, and threaded comments, start with Lemmy. Discord is a better fit for ongoing group conversation, while Discourse is worth looking for when you already know the independent forum you want. Mastodon and Bluesky are social-feed alternatives, not established Reddit-style forum replacements. No service is a universal winner for activity: check whether the particular communities you care about are active and well moderated.
Which Reddit alternative should you try?
| What you want | Best place to start | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Topic forums with posts, votes, and threaded discussion | Lemmy | Federated servers host separate communities, and server rules and activity can differ. |
| Ongoing group conversation around an interest, especially gaming | Discord | Communities are organized around group participation; this is a different model from topic forums. |
| A particular organization’s, product’s, or hobby’s forum | Discourse-powered community | Discourse is software used by separate communities, not one shared destination. |
| A person- or feed-oriented social experience | Mastodon or Bluesky | These are adjacent social-feed options; the sources reviewed do not establish them as subreddit-equivalent forums. |
There is no established apples-to-apples activity ranking across these services in the sources available for this comparison. A large network does not guarantee that your niche has lively, useful discussions; inspect the specific community before committing.

Lemmy: the closest match for Reddit-style forums
Lemmy describes itself as “A decentralised discussion platform for communities.” Its official site describes choosing communities and posts, voting, threaded comments, and tools for blocking and filtering. The project’s official repository explains that users can subscribe to forums hosted on other servers as well as their own: “For a link aggregator, this means a user registered on one server can subscribe to forums on any other server, and can have discussions with users registered elsewhere.”
How federation affects your choice
Lemmy is not one centrally operated site. Different people operate servers, often called instances, and each sets its own moderation policy. You choose a server to register with, but you can still follow communities on other participating servers. This gives communities room to set their own rules and lets users reach beyond one server; it also means the experience depends partly on the server you pick.
#1 Best Overall
- Fast to Learn, Hilarious to Play Set up and teach the entire game in under 2 minutes. Perfect for game night groups who want big laughs without a long rulebook
- Cooperative Storytelling With Magical Mishaps Play as student wizards trying to solve chaotic college problems—but every spell you cast is unpredictable. Say your spell intention, draw a disc, and watch the unexpected magically unfold.
- Unique Spell-Casting Mechanic Spell outcomes are determined by randomly drawn discs with colors and symbols. Another player interprets the disc, leading to surprising twists and unforgettable moments every round.
- Two Ways to Play: Standard or Epic Mode Enjoy the fast 20-minute standard game for quick fun, or switch to the 90–120 minute epic version for a deeper, RPG-inspired adventure with expanded storytelling.
- Perfect for 3–8 Players Ideal party game for families, friends, and tabletop RPG lovers. Complete your magical objectives to win—or simply enjoy the creative chaos you conjure together.
- Before joining, look for the topics you want and check recent posts and discussion quality.
- Read the server’s rules and moderation approach; policies are not uniform across Lemmy.
- Check whether the server and communities you’re considering are active enough for your interests.
The Lemmy project lists apps for iOS, Android, desktop, and web. It also says the project has no advertising or user tracking. Those are project statements, not guarantees about every independently operated server or third-party app.
Discord: choose it for live group participation
Discord is a strong option when an interest is organized around a group that talks regularly, particularly in gaming. Its official community page centers on gaming communities and showcases game-related examples.
Rank #2
- ADULT TWIST ON THE CLASSIC BOARD GAME: This adult board game is a hilarious adult twist on classic Monopoly gameplay
- WORK TOGETHER…OR NOT: This adult party edition of the Monopoly game has players moving around the board contributing to community projects…unless they can steal projects to get ahead
- WINNING IS FOR CAPITALISTS: Contribute to the Community Fund…unless you choose deplete it. Consider the best interest of the group…unless you want to forget that and just do what you need to do
- CHANCE CARDS: Working together might seem ideal, but Chance Cards can abruptly shake things up with things such as lousy neighbors, vegan meatloaf, and bad plumbing
- FUN ADULT PARTY GAME: Get ready for laughs as the twists and turns of life put a damper on working toward a shared, utopian society. Cooperation isn't always what it's cracked up to be
That makes Discord a different destination from Reddit’s topic-based forum model. Choose it when you want to participate in a group, rather than assuming it will provide the same kind of persistent, topic-organized discussion experience. The official material reviewed here does not establish a platform-wide activity comparison with Reddit or other alternatives.
Discourse: find the specific forum you want
Discourse is community software, not one unified social network. Its official site presents it as a platform for communities; separate organizations and interest groups use it for their own forums. It makes sense if you already have a group in mind—for example, a product community or hobby forum—and discover that it uses Discourse. Finding the forum is a separate step; the platform itself is not a single directory of every topic community.

Mastodon and Bluesky: social feeds, not proven forum substitutes
Mastodon and Bluesky are worth considering if you prefer a social-feed experience. The official Mastodon site and Bluesky blog do not establish enough detail in the sources reviewed for a precise comparison of topic discovery, feeds, or community structure. Treat them as adjacent social options rather than assuming either provides a direct replacement for Reddit’s subreddit-style forums.
How to tell whether an alternative will work for your interests
- Identify the format you want. If you want public topic forums with posts, votes, and threaded discussion, try Lemmy first. If you want sustained group conversation, look at Discord. If you have a specific group in mind, search for its own forum, including one powered by Discourse.
- Search for your actual topics. A service’s overall scale says little about whether your particular interest has useful, recent discussion.
- Check recent activity and quality. Look at post dates, replies, and whether discussions are substantive before moving your attention there.
- Review moderation and participation expectations. On Lemmy, rules vary by server. In any community, check its posted norms and decide whether they suit you.
- Try more than one destination if needed. Different interests may be better served by different formats; there is no need to force every community into one network.
Do you need to buy anything?
No physical purchase is needed to follow online communities. Lemmy can be self-hosted, but that is an optional task for operators who want to run a server, not a requirement for ordinary readers.
