One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor FFmpeg streaming that encodes H.264 on the board, the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is the better-supported choice. Raspberry Pi documents a hardware H.264 encoder on Pi 4, while Pi 5 has no hardware video encoder and must use software encoding for H.264. That makes Pi 4 the more direct fit when the board itself needs to encode the stream—not proof that it will run uninterrupted around the clock.
Why Pi 4 is the safer fit for on-board H.264 encoding
The deciding factor is the encoder path, not which board is newer. Raspberry Pi’s published comparison identifies the Pi 4’s H.264 hardware-encoding path as h264_v4l2m2m. Pi 5 has no hardware video encoder; an H.264 workflow therefore relies on CPU-based software encoding such as libx264. See Raspberry Pi’s H.264 encoding comparison and its explanation of Pi 5’s software environment.
That distinction matters when choosing a small computer to encode a camera or other live input and send it to YouTube. Pi 5 is a faster general-purpose computer, with a quad-core 2.4 GHz Cortex-A76 CPU and a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder, but neither its newer CPU nor its decoder is an H.264 hardware encoder. The Pi 5 specifications should not be read as evidence that its software encoder will meet every stream’s demands.
When Pi 5 can still make sense
Pi 5 may be a viable choice if software encoding performs well enough for your chosen input, resolution, frame rate, and FFmpeg filters. The available evidence does not establish a universal performance threshold for a YouTube stream. Validate the actual workload on the exact board and software stack rather than inferring encoding capacity from general CPU specifications.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What “24/7” can—and cannot—mean here
The hardware information supports choosing Pi 4 for its documented encoder; it does not establish continuous uptime. There is no directly comparable endurance test here of Pi 4 and Pi 5 running a complete FFmpeg-to-YouTube workload, and a board specification is not an uptime guarantee. Before relying on either setup, test the complete chain under sustained load: input source, FFmpeg build and drivers, output settings, cooling, power supply, network, and restart or recovery behavior.
There is also no universal RAM minimum established for this job. Requirements depend on the source, filters, audio, operating system, and other processes running on the board.

Configure the stream to match YouTube’s ingest guidance
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists H.264 and RTMP/RTMPS as supported options. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, its recommended bitrate range is 5–14 Mbps. Rates vary by resolution and frame rate, so use the table on YouTube’s page for the mode you actually plan to send; do not apply the 1080p30 range to a different mode by assumption. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery.
- Codec and transport: H.264 over RTMP or RTMPS.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: every two seconds is recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: choose the published recommendation for your exact resolution and frame rate. At 1080p30 H.264, YouTube lists 5–14 Mbps.
Platform guidance can change; check YouTube’s current settings page again when configuring a new stream. FFmpeg commands depend on the input, audio, pixel format, bitrate, installed FFmpeg build, and available drivers. In particular, confirm that your Pi 4 software stack exposes the intended hardware encoder before relying on an example command. Avoid unnecessary decode-and-re-encode work if the source is already encoded and can be passed through compatibly, but verify that the stream’s codec and other output requirements meet YouTube’s needs.

Power and sustained operation
Raspberry Pi recommends a 3 A USB-C supply for Pi 4. Its hardware guidance warns that an inadequate supply or cable can trigger low-voltage warnings, and that low-quality supplies may cause unpredictable behavior or storage corruption. Use a suitable supply and cable, and monitor for warnings during testing; this reduces avoidable power risks but cannot guarantee uninterrupted service.
For a long-running installation, treat cooling, storage health, network reliability, and recovery after a power or connection interruption as parts of the system, not as properties guaranteed by the board. Test the exact enclosure and workload you intend to deploy. The available specifications do not establish a universal streaming temperature, power draw, or failure rate for either model.

Practical decision
| Model | H.264 encoding path | Fit for this use |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 4 Model B | Documented hardware path: h264_v4l2m2m. |
Best-supported recommendation when the Pi must encode H.264. |
| Raspberry Pi 5 | No hardware video encoder; H.264 uses software encoding such as libx264. |
Consider only after testing software-encoding performance with the actual stream and settings. |
Choose Pi 4 Model B if you want the documented hardware H.264 encoding route. Choose Pi 5 only when your workload has been tested and software encoding meets its needs. Neither choice, by itself, establishes 24/7 reliability.
Or let it run in the cloud
