If you want a post-apocalyptic first-person shooter on PS5, start with Metro Exodus: it is the closest fit for a directed story, first-person combat, stealth, exploration, and survival horror. Choose S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl for a harsher, nonlinear exclusion-zone experience. Atomfall is a looser survival-action match, while Fallout 4 and Pacific Drive suit different priorities rather than serving as direct shooter substitutes.
How to choose a PS5 game like Metro Exodus
“Best” depends on what you want to keep from the experience. A close match combines first-person shooting with a post-apocalyptic setting, but the games below differ in how directed their stories are, how much survival pressure they apply, and whether shooting is actually the main activity.

Closest matches for first-person shooting
Metro Exodus: best for a directed, atmospheric story
Metro Exodus is the most direct choice if you want the combination of first-person shooting, stealth, exploration, and survival horror. PlayStation describes a story set across post-apocalyptic Russia, with non-linear levels and a journey that moves through spring, summer, autumn, and nuclear winter. The US PlayStation Store listing identifies PS4 and PS5 versions and gives June 18, 2021 as the release date.

Its defining appeal is a guided narrative and atmosphere, not a sprawling RPG sandbox. Pick it when you want the story and mood to shape your journey, with combat and stealth as parts of the experience rather than a reason to expect unrestricted open-world progression.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl: best for a dangerous, nonlinear zone
GSC Game World describes S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 as a post-apocalyptic survival experience in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, blending first-person shooter, immersive-sim, and horror elements around a nonlinear story. It is a strong alternative if you would rather explore a threatening zone and make your way through a less linear experience than follow a tightly directed campaign.

That makes Atomfall a good option if you want first-person exploration and survival systems in an alternative-history setting. It is a looser match for Metro Exodus: the available descriptions support calling it survival action, not claiming it has the same story structure or is an equally close shooter substitute.
Different kinds of post-apocalyptic alternatives
Fallout 4: open-world RPG progression
Fallout 4 sends you out from Vault 111 to explore post-apocalyptic Massachusetts, improve your armor and arsenal, and progress through an open-world role-playing game. It allows play in either first or third person, making it a reasonable pick if you value exploration and character development more than a consistently first-person, survival-horror campaign.

- Ultra Customizable Controls
- Mappable Back Buttons
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
Do not assume that a PS4/PS5 editorial page proves a native PS5 build. Check your local PlayStation Store listing for the current version and how it runs on your console before buying.
Pacific Drive: survival by car, not a shooter
Pacific Drive is a first-person driving-survival game set in a post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest. Its central loop revolves around scavenging, upgrading a station wagon, and making runs into the Olympic Exclusion Zone. It fits if the setting, resource-gathering, and survival tension matter more to you than gunplay; it is not a first-person shooter alternative in the usual sense.

Should you wait for Metro 2039?
As of October 4, 2026, Metro 2039 is upcoming, not an available alternative. In a PlayStation Blog announcement, 4A Games Head of Brand Robbie Cooke wrote, “Today we’re excited to finally confirm that Metro 2039 launches February 4 2027*.” The asterisk notes a February 5 release in some territories, including Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.
The announcement describes Metro 2039 as a solo, story-driven FPS and discusses radiation and equipment management, plus PS5 and PS5 Pro ray tracing with a 60fps Performance Mode. Those are announcement details, not a report on the released game; release timing and features can change.
