Bedford Falls and Raven Creek are the two strongest starting points for a modded Project Zomboid multiplayer server. Bedford Falls is a very large fictional town suited to groups that want varied neighborhoods and long-term scavenging. Raven Creek is a denser, more dangerous urban map built around high loot concentration and heavy zombie pressure.
Both are primarily Build 41 choices in the material available for this guide. Bedford Falls does not have confirmed Build 42 support, and the Raven Creek identifiers and compatibility should be checked on their current Workshop pages before you create a production save. Treat the configurations below as examples to verify, not immutable templates.

| Map | Best for | Compatibility evidence | World feel | Installation risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bedford Falls | Groups wanting a huge town with varied districts, buildings and loot routes | Build 41 community map; Build 42 status unconfirmed | Broad fictional town with many structures and survival challenges | Moderate; edge-cell conflicts and uncertain load-order interactions |
| Raven Creek | Players who want dense city combat, concentrated loot and frequent zombie encounters | Commonly used with Build 41; verify the current Workshop item and internal mod ID | High-density urban environment | Moderate to high when combined with other large maps |
| Large map collections | Experienced administrators building a multi-region campaign | Collections target Build 41 builds such as 41.78; individual items can change | Many connected additions with dependencies | High; dependencies, cell overlaps and load order require testing |
If you want one map and the least administrative work, start with Bedford Falls or Raven Creek rather than a collection. If you want the most variety, add maps incrementally and test a fresh save after every major change.
What to check before installing any map
Match the game build
Project Zomboid map mods are build-specific. Build 41 mods do not run on Build 42 servers. Confirm the server’s branch and the map’s stated target before editing a configuration file. Bedford Falls is documented as a Build 41 map, while its Build 42 status is not confirmed; do not assume that a map that worked on an older save will load on a new Build 42 server.

Plan for a new save
Map changes are safest before the first world is generated. Adding, removing or moving a map after players have explored its cells can leave missing buildings, inaccessible areas or mismatched spawn data. Keep a backup of the server save and test a new world whenever you change a major map or its load order.
Separate the three configuration concepts
A working server normally needs the numeric Workshop item ID, the mod’s internal ID and the map folder name. They are different values:
- WorkshopItems= takes the numeric Steam Workshop ID.
- Mods= takes the mod ID supplied by the mod, not the numeric Workshop ID.
- Map= takes the map folder names, including the vanilla entries and any added regions.
Using the display title in place of an internal ID is a common reason a server starts without the map.
Bedford Falls: the best all-round town expansion
Bedford Falls is described by its Build 41 guide as a huge, detailed fictional town. It adds new structures and loot locations and gives a group more room to spread out than a compact urban map. Its scale supports several play styles: builders can establish a base away from the center, scavengers can plan district-to-district runs, and a larger group can divide responsibilities without exhausting the same few vanilla neighborhoods.
Known Workshop and mod identifiers
The guide identifies the community map author as RingoD123 and gives Workshop ID 522891356. Confirm that number and the current internal mod ID on the Workshop page before deploying; Workshop items can be replaced or updated.
Example server configuration
The Bedford Falls guide gives this example map line:

Keep the vanilla map entries required by your server. The example is intended to show the relationship between the fields, not to replace the complete configuration generated by your hosting panel or dedicated-server installer.
When Bedford Falls is the better choice
- Your group wants a town-sized expansion instead of a wall-to-wall high-rise district.
- You prefer more varied building types and longer routes between loot areas.
- You are running a verified Build 41 setup and can test map interactions before inviting players.
The Bedford Falls guide also says to place the map before other maps that share edge cells. That advice conflicts with another collection’s recommended order, so treat it as a starting point and verify the result in your own map combination.
Raven Creek: the dense urban challenge
Raven Creek is described as a high-detail urban map packed with loot and zombies. Its density changes the rhythm of multiplayer: players encounter threats quickly, buildings are close together, and a short supply run can become a major combat operation. It suits groups that want pressure from the first session and do not mind losing characters while learning the streets.
Identifiers that require verification
One hosting configuration lists Workshop ID 2196102849, internal mod ID RavenCreek, and this map entry:
WorkshopItems=2196102849
Mods=RavenCreek
Map=Muldraugh, KY;RavenCreek
That configuration is not independently confirmed. Check the current Steam Workshop page for the numeric ID and internal name. The display title can differ from the internal mod ID, and copying a title into Mods= can make the server appear to start while silently omitting the map.
When Raven Creek is the better choice
- Your players want dense city fighting rather than long rural travel.
- You want high-risk early scavenging and concentrated urban loot.
- You are willing to test spawn points and cell conflicts with every other map in the pack.
Raven Creek is also more sensitive to combinations with other large city maps. A map can load successfully while buildings or spawn zones from an adjacent map are overwritten, so check the actual in-game border rather than relying only on a clean server boot.
Should you install a large map collection?
Collections can turn the vanilla region into a much larger campaign, but they are a different administrative project from installing one map. A Steam collection titled “+150 Maps Mods Full Compatible” targets Build 41.78 single-player and multiplayer and includes dependencies and a suggested load order. Its summary describes 175 additions even though the title says “+150,” so verify the current item count and each dependency on the collection page.

A separate Build 41 Modded Map Collection (Cheery Edition) is another starting point. Collections are useful for discovering compatible regions, but they do not guarantee that every combination remains compatible after a Workshop update. Install a few maps at a time, record the exact versions, and keep a rollback copy of the server save.
Why collections need more testing
- Two maps can claim adjacent or overlapping cells.
- One map may depend on a library or another map that is not obvious from its title.
- A collection’s load order may be written for a particular set of maps and fail when you add or remove one.
- Workshop updates can change files between your test and production restart.
The collection guide recommends using a map-mod manager to find cell conflicts. Use that kind of tool as a diagnostic aid, then verify the resulting world manually with a test character.
How to install a map on a dedicated multiplayer server
1. Confirm the branch and make a backup
- Check whether the server and every client are on Build 41 or Build 42.
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Back up the world save and the server configuration files.
- Write down the current Workshop items, mod IDs and map line so you can revert precisely.
2. Subscribe and identify the correct values
Find the map on Steam Workshop and note its current numeric Workshop ID, internal mod ID, dependencies and supported game build. Do not copy an ID from an old forum post without checking the item page. One commonly mentioned supporting mod, Common Sense, is listed with two different IDs—2875848298 and 2685168362—in separate roundups. That conflict is exactly why every ID must be verified before it enters a production configuration.
3. Add the Workshop item
Put the numeric ID in the server’s WorkshopItems= field. Separate multiple IDs with the delimiter required by your server interface, usually a semicolon. Do not put the internal mod name in this field.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →4. Add the internal mod ID
Put the mod’s internal identifier in Mods=. Use the exact spelling and capitalization shown by the mod’s instructions or files. Workshop titles such as “Raven Creek” are not automatically valid internal IDs.
5. Add the map folder and retain vanilla maps
Add the map folder to Map= and leave the vanilla entries in place. Removing default maps—especially Muldraugh, KY—can cause startup and world-generation problems. A simplified pattern looks like this:
WorkshopItems=<numeric-workshop-id>
Mods=<internal-mod-id>
Map=Muldraugh, KY;<added-map-folder>
Replace the angle-bracket values with verified strings; do not leave the brackets in the live file.

6. Pin versions while testing
Pin the Workshop versions, where your hosting control panel or deployment method supports it, so an automatic Workshop update does not change the files between tests. Unpin only after you have a tested update procedure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
7. Start a test world and inspect it
- Start the server with a fresh save.
- Watch the console for missing Workshop items, dependency errors or map-load warnings.
- Join with a client that has subscribed to the same Workshop items.
- Check the intended spawn points, map borders, major buildings and several loot locations.
- Stop the server and record the tested order and versions before opening the server to the group.
Load order: why published advice conflicts
Map load order determines which files win when maps touch the same cells. The Bedford Falls guide says to place Bedford Falls before other maps that share edge cells. The large collection instead recommends giving Dirkerdam, Slocum Lake Redux and Bedford Falls the lowest priority so that Eerie Country, Raven Creek, Kingsmouth in KY and Greenport are not overwritten.
Those recommendations point in opposite directions because they describe different map sets and conflict rules. There is no universally safe order for every combination. Make a copy of the configuration, test one order, then reverse only the disputed entries and compare the same border locations. Keep the order that preserves the buildings, roads and spawn points you actually use.
A practical conflict-testing method
- List every map in the pack and identify maps that share edges or cells.
- Start with the order supplied by the map collection or individual guide.
- Check each shared border in a new world.
- Move only one disputed map at a time, then restart and recheck.
- Record the winning order in a text file alongside the Workshop versions.
Never judge compatibility only by whether the server reaches the login screen. A successful boot does not prove that every map’s structures and spawn zones survived.

Client and server mod requirements
Every player connecting to a modded server must have the same Workshop subscriptions. If a client is missing a required item, the handshake is refused. Ask players to restart Steam and let Workshop downloads finish before troubleshooting the server.
Server-side content mods, such as weapon or gameplay additions, must be present in the server’s list and downloaded by clients. Pure interface changes can be client-only. For example, Inventory Tetris and CleanUI are cited as client-only UI mods, while content mods such as Brita’s Weapon Pack and Common Sense belong in the server’s content setup when the server uses them.
Supporting mods worth considering
Community Core Library
Community Core Library is recommended in multiplayer roundups as a first installation for a stable mod base. Treat that as a compatibility recommendation, not a guarantee: confirm that the current version supports your game branch and the maps you selected.
Best Value
Common Sense
Common Sense is described as a quality-of-life mod with no intended balance impact and very low RAM use. Its Workshop ID is reported inconsistently, so verify the current item before adding it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Brita’s Weapon Pack
Brita’s Weapon Pack adds more than 200 guns, attachments and ammunition types. The roundups estimate 1–2 GB of RAM use and note that some servers consider its combat balance too generous. Test it separately from your map pack so you can tell whether a memory or gameplay change comes from the map or the weapon content.
Other frequently named additions
Better Sorting, Skill Recovery Journal and Proximity Inventory appear in hosting roundups. Those roundups do not provide primary-source verification for them, so check each mod’s current page, build target and dependency list before treating them as part of a stable server preset.
Troubleshooting missing maps and spawn points
The server starts, but the map is not visible
- Confirm the numeric Workshop ID is current and belongs to the intended item.
- Confirm the internal name in
Mods=; display names are not reliable substitutes. - Confirm the map folder appears in
Map=. - Restore the vanilla map entries, including
Muldraugh, KY. - Check that the server and clients use the same Build branch.
- Test with a fresh save rather than a world generated before the map was installed.
The server refuses a player’s connection
Compare the player’s Workshop subscriptions with the server’s WorkshopItems= list. A missing or unfinished download commonly causes the handshake refusal. Have the player close the game, allow Steam to complete the download, and reconnect.
Spawn points disappear or several maps fail together
A server-owner report described Raven Creek, Bedford Falls and Chinatown failing to show their spawn points at boot. Disabling Chinatown allowed the server to boot, but Raven Creek and Bedford Falls still did not appear. Another commenter said that moving a nature reserve above Bedford Falls and deleting North fixed that particular setup. These are anecdotal fixes, not universal rules, but they illustrate why you should remove one disputed map or edge entry at a time and retest on a backup or fresh save.
A map’s buildings are overwritten
Reverse the order of the maps that share the affected cells, following the controlled test method above. If the problem remains, remove one map from the test pack and confirm which addition owns the cells. Rebuild the pack in small groups rather than reintroducing every collection item at once.
Performance and administration trade-offs
No published benchmark in the available material measures server tick rate, memory use or player capacity for Bedford Falls versus Raven Creek. Do not promise a particular FPS, RAM requirement or maximum player count. Performance depends on the game build, active zombies, player density, other mods and the server’s hardware.
Large cities increase the amount of content players can load and can create more intense combat scenes. Large collections add dependencies and more opportunities for conflicts. The safest operational approach is to start with one map, observe the server under your normal player count, then add one change at a time while watching memory, console warnings and player-reported stutter.
A decision checklist
- Choose Bedford Falls for a broad Build 41 town experience with varied districts and long scavenging routes.
- Choose Raven Creek for concentrated urban danger and high-density loot, after verifying its current Workshop and internal IDs.
- Choose a collection only if you can maintain dependencies, version records, backups and a repeatable conflict test.
- Keep vanilla maps in
Map=; put numeric IDs inWorkshopItems=and internal names inMods=. - Require clients to subscribe to the same Workshop items.
- Pin versions during testing and do not move an established world to a new map order without a backup.
- Assume Build 41 and Build 42 are separate mod ecosystems until a map’s author confirms otherwise.
Recommended starting setup
For a first modded campaign, use a verified Build 41 server, install either Bedford Falls or Raven Creek—not both initially—and retain the vanilla map line. Confirm that players can join, inspect the new map in a fresh save, and record the exact Workshop ID, internal mod ID and load order. Once that baseline is stable, add supporting mods or a second map one at a time. This approach gives you a usable world and a clear way to identify the change when something breaks.
