Grant the bot only the server permissions its features need, set sensitive command defaults with default_member_permissions, and use Server Settings > Integrations for role, user, and channel exceptions. Test the final result with a non-administrator account.
The two permission systems you must configure
Discord separates a bot’s capabilities from a member’s ability to run an application command. They overlap operationally, but one cannot replace the other.

| Control | What it limits | Where it is configured | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bot or app permissions | Actions the bot user can take in a server | Installation permission selection and the server’s role/channel permissions | Whether the bot can send messages, read message history, or manage a channel |
| Application-command permissions | Members, roles, and channels that may invoke a slash command or other application command | Command registration defaults, plus the server’s Integrations settings | Allow an AI moderation command only to moderators in one channel |
A bot can have permission to post in a channel while ordinary members are blocked from invoking its command. Conversely, a member may be allowed to see a command that fails because the bot lacks the server permission required to complete it. Configure both layers and verify them independently.

Before selecting permissions, describe each feature as an action in Discord. “AI bot” is not a permission category, and there is no universal minimum permission set for every implementation.

Request only the corresponding bot permissions during installation. If a feature does not need a capability, leave that capability unrequested. Revisit the selection whenever a feature is added or removed rather than granting a broad preset “just in case.”
Some command-only applications do not need a bot user at all. Discord’s documentation says the bot scope and a bot permission bitfield are unnecessary when the app’s commands do not require a bot user. If the app must act as a bot user—for example, posting a reply as that user—install it with the capabilities that action requires.
Choose whether commands are global or limited to one server
Application commands are registered through Discord’s HTTP API. The registration scope affects where the command exists; it does not decide which members may use it.

| Choice | Reach | DM availability | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guild command | One specified server | Not available in DMs | Server-specific rollout, staging, or testing |
| Global command | Servers that install the app | Can be available in supported DM contexts, depending on configuration | A command intended for every server using the app |
Guild commands update immediately, which makes them practical for testing a new AI feature in one server. A global command is appropriate when the feature is part of the app’s general product, but its broader reach makes conservative defaults more important.
For global commands, use the contexts property to choose where an interaction can occur. Discord documents GUILD, BOT_DM, and PRIVATE_CHANNEL; the private-channel context applies to user-installed apps. A guild command cannot use BOT_DM. Contexts control interaction surfaces, not which server members may use a command, so you still need command-permission settings.
Do not confuse integration_types with contexts. Installation context describes where an app was installed. Interaction context describes where a command can be used. Neither setting substitutes for a server’s application-command permission controls.
Set a safe default for each sensitive command
The developer-side default is default_member_permissions. It is a serialized bitwise OR of Discord permission values. Set it to the permission that a member must have by default, such as a management permission for a configuration command.
For an administrator-only default, Discord documents the string "0". That denies ordinary guild members by default while allowing administrators to use the command. The setting is applied when you create or update the command.
{
"name": "ai-config",
"description": "Configure this server's AI features",
"type": 1,
"default_member_permissions": "0",
"contexts": ["GUILD"]
}
The example makes the command guild-only and unavailable to ordinary members by default. It does not permanently lock the command to administrators. Server administrators can create explicit overrides in the client, including granting access to a role, user, or channel. Treat "0" as a safe starting policy, not as a complete server access policy.

Use a specific Discord permission when administrators are not the only audience
If a command should be available to members with a particular Discord permission, serialize that permission in default_member_permissions instead of using "0". Discord’s documentation uses MANAGE_GUILD as an example. This provides a broad default across servers, while administrators can still refine it with server-level overrides.
Do not build new commands around deprecated fields
Discord marks default_permission as deprecated and not recommended. Use default_member_permissions for the default audience and contexts for interaction surfaces. Discord also marks dm_permission as deprecated in favor of contexts.

Restrict a command in a server’s Integrations settings
A server administrator can make the practical, server-specific changes in the Discord client:
- Open the server and choose Server Settings.
- Open Integrations.
- Select the AI application to open its management view.
- Review the application-command permissions. Depending on the client view, apply a rule across the app’s commands or open an individual command for a separate policy.
- Add or remove allowed and denied roles, users, and channels as required.
- Save the change, then check the command from an account in each affected role and channel.
Discord supports role, user, and channel targets for application-command permission overrides. The documented maximum is 100 permission entries per command. That is an API limit, not a recommendation to create 100 exceptions; a small number of role and channel rules is easier to audit.
Command permissions can be synchronized with app-wide settings or unsynchronized for more granular, individual-command controls. If one AI command is more sensitive than the rest—for example, a command that changes system prompts or exports data—give that command its own policy instead of weakening the defaults for every command.
What a blocked member sees
When a member is not allowed to use an application command, Discord does not show that command in the command picker for that member. This is useful for reducing confusion, but it is not a substitute for testing: check both visibility and execution in the actual target channel.
Administrators remain able to manage access
Administrators can use commands that are denied to ordinary members by the default administrator-only setting, and they can create explicit overrides in the Integrations interface. Document who is responsible for those overrides before deploying a bot; otherwise a later server change can make the effective policy differ from the developer’s default.
Use the server-wide “Use Application Commands” gate carefully
Discord identifies Use Application Commands as a permission that can grant or deny a member the ability to use app commands. It is broader than restricting one AI command: denying it can affect application commands generally in the scope where the permission is applied.
Use this gate when the server needs a broad boundary, such as allowing commands only in a designated commands channel or denying them for a restricted role. If the goal is to protect one sensitive AI feature while leaving other applications available, use that command’s Integrations rule instead. Explain the scope to moderators before applying a category- or server-wide deny.

A complete developer-to-administrator setup sequence
1. Inventory every bot action
Write down the exact server operation behind each AI feature. Separate receiving an interaction from posting a message, reading history, managing content, and changing configuration. Map each operation to the narrowest Discord permission it needs. If an action is performed only through an interaction response and does not require a bot user, consider a command-only installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Select the command scope
Register a guild command for a server-specific rollout or test. Register a global command when every server that installs the app should receive it. Remember that a guild command is unavailable in DMs, while a global command can be exposed in supported DM contexts if its contexts allow that surface.
3. Install the app with only required bot capabilities
During installation, select the bot permissions that correspond to the inventory. The bot scope adds the bot user to the selected guild. The applications.commands scope adds application commands and is included with bot. If no bot user is needed, Discord says those bot-specific selections are not necessary for the command-only use case.
4. Set command defaults in registration code
Give ordinary commands the least permissive useful default. Use a serialized Discord permission for commands intended for a management role, or "0" for an administrator-only default. Add contexts for the surfaces where the command should function. Keep this policy in the same deployment process that creates or updates commands so a later registration does not silently reset it.
5. Apply server-specific exceptions
Ask a server administrator to open Server Settings > Integrations and set role, user, and channel overrides. Use per-command controls for sensitive features. Avoid assuming that the developer default will match every server’s staffing model; a server may need a trusted role to use an administrator-default command.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →6. Decide whether a broad command gate is appropriate
Review the placement of Use Application Commands. A deny at a broad role or channel level can block more applications than intended, so reserve it for a deliberate server-wide or area-wide policy.
7. Verify with a non-administrator account
Test in the actual target channel with at least one account that should be allowed and one that should be denied. Confirm that:
- The command appears for the intended role and is absent for the denied role.
- The bot can complete the response with its granted server permissions.
- The command is unavailable in DMs when the command is guild-only.
- A channel-specific exception behaves differently from the server default.
- An administrator can still manage or invoke an administrator-default command.
This verification is a deployment check, not a replacement for maintaining the policy. Repeat it after changing command registration, moving channels, changing roles, or reinstalling the app.
Automating permission overrides through the API
The client’s Integrations page is generally simpler for a server administrator. Use API-based writes when you are building repeatable provisioning or a management tool for multiple servers.

Application-command permission overrides target one of three resource types:
| Target | API type | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Role | type: 1 |
Allow or deny members with a specified role |
| User | type: 2 |
Allow or deny a specified user |
| Channel | type: 3 |
Allow or deny use in a specified channel |
Each entry carries an allow/deny boolean. Discord documents up to 100 permission entries per command.
Authentication and authority requirements
Discord says API permission updates require a Bearer token authorized with applications.commands.permissions.update. The user authorizing the update must have Manage Guild and Manage Roles, must be able to run the command, and must have authority over the affected resources. A bot token alone does not authorize this permission-update endpoint.
In practical terms, do not put a bot token in a script and assume it can rewrite command permissions. Obtain the required user authorization, protect the resulting credentials, and reject changes that target roles or channels outside that user’s authority.
Keep API automation within Discord’s policy
Discord’s Developer Policy requires applications not to bypass Discord privacy, safety, or security features and to respect members’ ability to remove the application. Permission automation should make access clearer and narrower, never use hidden rules to evade a server administrator’s controls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and how to correct them
Giving the bot administrator-level permissions
Symptom: The bot works, but it can perform actions unrelated to the AI feature.
Correction: Revisit the action inventory, remove unneeded installation permissions, and test every feature after narrowing the set. A working response does not prove that broad permissions are justified.
Using bot permissions to control human users
Symptom: The bot can post only in approved channels, but every member can still invoke its AI command.
Correction: Configure default_member_permissions and the app’s Integrations command rules. Bot permissions govern the bot user’s actions; they do not determine who may invoke a command.
Best Value
Assuming default_member_permissions: "0" is immutable
Symptom: A server administrator grants a trusted role access and the developer expects the command to remain administrator-only.
Correction: Treat the value as the default audience. Server administrators can create explicit overrides, so the effective policy must be checked in the server where the app is installed.
Restricting a global command with contexts alone
Symptom: The command is limited to guild interactions, but unauthorized members in that guild can still see it.
Correction: Keep contexts for surface selection and add command permissions for member, role, and channel access.
Using a deprecated field in new code
Symptom: A tutorial relies on default_permission or dm_permission.
Correction: Replace them with default_member_permissions and contexts, respectively, and confirm the current Discord developer documentation before shipping registration payloads.
Blocking all application commands accidentally
Symptom: Other apps stop working after a permissions change.

Testing only as an administrator
Symptom: The developer sees and can run every command, while intended users report missing commands or failures.
Correction: Test with a non-administrator account in each relevant role and channel. Administrators can bypass some default restrictions, so an administrator test cannot validate ordinary-member behavior.
Choosing the right control for common AI-bot designs
| Design need | Recommended configuration | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Private server pilot | Guild command, narrow bot permissions, role/channel override in Integrations | Immediate updates and a tightly bounded rollout |
| Public AI help command | Global command, only the bot capabilities needed to answer, guild context unless DMs are intentional | Broad availability without exposing unnecessary interaction surfaces |
| Server configuration or data-export command | default_member_permissions: "0", guild context, explicit trusted-role override only when the administrator wants one |
Safe default for a high-impact command |
| Moderator workflow in one channel | Permission default for the moderator capability plus a channel-specific Integrations rule | Combines an appropriate audience with a defined operating location |
| Command-only interaction app | Application commands without a bot user when the implementation does not need one | Avoids granting bot-user capabilities that the app cannot use |
A maintenance checklist for bot owners and server administrators
- Record every bot permission and the feature that justifies it.
- Review command defaults whenever a command is created, renamed, or repurposed.
- Check global-command contexts separately from guild command permissions.
- Audit Integrations overrides for stale users, roles, and channels.
- Keep the number of per-command entries manageable and below Discord’s documented limit of 100.
- Use a user-authorized Bearer token, not a bot token, for API permission updates.
- Retest with a non-administrator after permission, role, channel, or installation changes.
- Confirm that the app still follows Discord’s privacy, safety, and security requirements.
The durable pattern is least privilege at the bot layer, a conservative command default at registration, and explicit server-level exceptions only where a real operational need exists. That combination limits what the AI application can do and who can ask it to do it.
