Offline navigation apps such as Organic Maps and OsmAnd help with the first; Dawarich, OwnTracks, and Traccar can support the second, with varying setup and data-control tradeoffs. Apple Maps also offers an optional built-in visit history for Apple users. Self-hosting can put the server under your control, but it does not make precise location data risk-free.
Navigation and location history are different jobs
A navigation app helps you find a route or browse a map. A location-history app records where you have been so you can revisit trips or search a timeline later. Some people asking for a Google Maps Timeline alternative want both, but offline maps do not automatically create a searchable personal visit record.

Compare options by asking where precise points are stored, who can access them and set retention, whether you can import or export records, how tracking works in the background, and how much configuration is required. Battery life and location accuracy depend on devices, settings, and conditions; the product information cited here does not establish comparative test results.

Google Maps Timeline
Google says Timeline is off by default and requires an opt-in. When it is enabled, it regularly saves precise device location on each participating device, including when Google apps are not open. Google provides controls to turn Timeline off, delete some or all of its data, and set auto-delete. It also says location data may be used to improve services and for some ad-effectiveness estimates, with only estimates shared with businesses. See Google Maps Help on Timeline.

- 📱 Global Cloud Positioning – Works with both Google's Find Hub and Apple Find My (Not for GPS & Huawei)
- 📢 Loud Alert Sound – Built-in speaker with up to 105dB for quick locating
- 🔋 Far Superior Battery Life – Up to 2 years battery life on Android and ios
- 💧 IP65 Waterproof – It provides protection against rainwaterand splashes
- 🔊 Visualize Distance – Visualize distance using UWB technology within Bluetooth range, allowing you to immediately see the distance
Deleting a Timeline visit does not necessarily remove related searches, interactions, or photos saved through other settings. Google says some particularly personal places are identified for deletion from Timeline soon after identification, but cautions that place designations may not always be up to date. Search-services settings are also being updated gradually, so available controls can differ between accounts.
Apple Maps Visited Places
Apple’s Visited Places is an optional feature that records places visited after it is enabled, with a user-adjustable retention period. Apple says: “Your Visited Places are end-to-end encrypted and cannot be read by Apple.” For users signed in with two-factor authentication, Apple says Pinned Locations, Recents, Visited Places, and Guides sync with end-to-end encryption. Details are in Apple’s Maps & Privacy documentation.

This does not mean Apple Maps never handles location. Apple says it may receive request information, including location when permitted, and some route requests include the origin, current location, and destination. Also consider Significant Locations & Routes, a separate Location Services feature that learns recently visited places and routes on signed-in devices. Apple explains it in its Location Services privacy documentation.

Both apps are based on OpenStreetMap data and support offline maps, but neither should be mistaken for a complete replacement for a visit timeline.

| App | Best fit | Privacy and control notes | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organic Maps | Offline directions and map browsing | Privacy Guides describes it as open-source, with offline OpenStreetMap maps and no tracking, data collection, or ads. | Privacy Guides notes it lacks satellite imagery, street view, and real-time traffic; its feature set is comparatively basic. |
| OsmAnd | Offline maps with more navigation functions | It uses offline OpenStreetMap-based maps. Privacy Guides notes a rotating UUID for internal reporting and map downloads, plus anonymous-data settings that vary by platform. | Review privacy settings for your platform; it should not be described as telemetry-free. |
Privacy Guides’ product notes for Organic Maps and OsmAnd are useful for checking their navigation features and privacy tradeoffs. Choose one if your main aim is reducing reliance on a mapping service for directions; choose a timeline-capable tool as well if you need a durable record of visits.
For a searchable visit record: Dawarich, OwnTracks, or Traccar
| Option | Best fit | Where the history goes | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dawarich | Timeline visualization, trips, insights, and importing existing records | Self-hosted instance or Dawarich Cloud; official documentation also describes mobile apps. | Self-hosting requires administration. Cloud hosting is easier to operate but means trusting the hosted service with the records. |
| OwnTracks | Users willing to configure a destination and assemble a tracking setup | OwnTracks does not send location data to a server until you configure one; it supports MQTT and other setup options described in its documentation. | It is not a turnkey timeline product by itself. Reverse-geolocation lookups use platform services by default, with an optional OpenCage configuration. |
| Traccar | Tracking with a server, history, reports, or connected trackers | Client reports go to the configured server, which can be self-hosted or managed. | The server operator controls access and retention. Stopping or uninstalling the client does not delete reports already sent. |
Dawarich: the closest fit for a Timeline-style archive
Dawarich documents location-history visualization, insights, trips, and imports including Google Timeline and OwnTracks. Its Android app records location on-device and uploads it to Dawarich Cloud or a self-hosted instance, according to the vendor documentation. Check current import formats and export behavior before moving an irreplaceable archive; support can change. Start with Dawarich’s documentation for its installation, apps, and import details.

An instruction manual is included. If you're concerned about understanding it, you can watch the video tutorial on our page.
OwnTracks: a configurable tracker, not a complete timeline service
OwnTracks is useful when you want to choose and configure where tracking data is sent. Its security documentation says location data is not sent to a location server until the user configures one. It supports TLS client certificates for MQTT and optional payload encryption. Those protections depend on configuring and maintaining the receiving service correctly.
Reverse geocoding is a separate consideration: OwnTracks says its iOS app uses Apple infrastructure and its non-open-source Android build uses Google Play services for these lookups. It also documents an optional OpenCage configuration. See OwnTracks’ security documentation.

Traccar: history and reports backed by a configured server
Traccar offers a client and server arrangement for location history and reports. The server can run on your own hardware or in the cloud. Its client privacy policy says reports go to the configured server, which may be operated by Traccar, an organization, or another provider. “The operator controls access, sharing, and retention on that server.” Use HTTPS where supported and choose a server operator you trust; the policy warns that HTTP may not encrypt delivery. Reports already uploaded remain on the server unless they are deleted there.
The client policy, effective September 21, 2026, separately discloses Firebase-based analytics, crash reporting, and messaging in distributed builds. These are distinct from location reports sent to the configured server. Read the Traccar client privacy policy and Traccar product information before choosing an instance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What self-hosting changes—and what it does not
With a self-hosted tracker, you take on the server as well as the data. That can give you direct control over access and retention, but it also makes you responsible for keeping the system updated, protecting accounts and network access, and managing backups and deletion. A home server or mini PC is one possible place to run a service; cloud hosting is another, but it places operation with a provider.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Secure delivery: Use HTTPS for a server exposed beyond a trusted local network. Avoid sending location reports over unencrypted HTTP.
- Restrict access: Use strong authentication, limit who can view the history, and avoid exposing an administration interface unnecessarily.
- Set retention deliberately: Decide how long records and backups remain, and learn how to delete data from both the app and server.
- Maintain the system: Apply updates and have a recovery plan for server failure. A self-hosted archive is still vulnerable to compromise, loss, or mistaken sharing.
If you do not want to maintain infrastructure, a managed service can reduce setup and update work, but the provider becomes another party holding sensitive location records.
Move an existing history without losing it
Do not disable the old source until you have confirmed that the archive you care about is present and usable in the new setup. Import and export formats can differ, so verify current support in the chosen product’s documentation.
Quick Recap
- Export first: Save a copy of your existing Timeline or other history before changing settings or deleting data.
- Check compatibility: Confirm the destination accepts the actual export format. Dawarich documents imports from Google Timeline and OwnTracks, but confirm current requirements.
- Test a short interval: Import a limited date range or a copy if possible, then check whether dates, places, and trips appear as expected.
- Verify retention and deletion: Find the controls for deleting records and setting retention in the new app and, if applicable, its server.
- Only then switch off the old source: Once the import and archive are confirmed, decide whether to stop future recording or delete the old history.
