Prepare for the Devil’s Pit fight
In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow is a secondary quest in Devil’s Pit, in central Velen, in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The quest was added in version 4.0 or later. A walkthrough recommends level 15, but that is guidance rather than a quest requirement; TheSixthAxis author Gareth Chadwick reported finding the boss difficult below level 10. Find and make Reinald’s Philter
On the exploration route, look for Wolf School markings and use Aard to open marked barriers. The recipe and most ingredients are in a chest; you may need to supply Celandine. Craft the philter under Alchemy > Quests. It combines effects comparable to Petri’s Philter and Tawny Owl for longer, making Signs available more quickly. The Magic Lamp can reveal optional ghost scenes, but they are not required to finish the quest.

Before using Aard on the salt stalagmites that open the cavern, finish exploring and preparing. The cavern is a point of no return until you defeat the Red Miasmal. The philter is useful but optional.
Defeat possessed Reinald
The apparition may try to persuade Geralt to hand over the philter. A dialogue response that refers to Lambert can expose the deception. Refuse to give the potion away; Geralt can drink it instead. The exact potion dialogue can vary depending on how you reached the scene.
Reinald uses Aard, Igni, sword attacks and Quen. The main tactic is to cast Yrden, draw him into its ring, then hit him with Aard while he is inside. The walkthrough describes this as the intended mechanic and says a few such hits can defeat him; Reinald’s Philter can help you cast Signs more often. Ordinary sword and Sign damage can also work.
Gamer Guides reports a possible fight-progression bug: if conventional damage triggers Reinald’s regeneration, the Yrden-and-Aard sequence may stop advancing the fight. If that happens, switch back to sword damage rather than repeating the same Sign sequence.

How to defeat the Red Miasmal
Once possessed Reinald falls, the Red Miasmal emerges. It attacks with claw swipes and a flame attack that travels along the ground and erupts beneath Geralt. Dodge the eruption, and do not stay committed to a long combo after an opening closes.
- Use measured attacks: Land a short string of fast strikes, then be ready to dodge. The walkthrough reports that attacks can stagger the Miasmal.
- Watch the ground: Move away from the flame’s path and dodge when it erupts beneath Geralt.
- Manage the plague victims: At roughly two-thirds and one-third health, the Miasmal summons plague victims in two waves. The sources differ on how many appear, so do not count on a specific total. Kill them if they interrupt your openings; otherwise, keep moving and watch for their attacks while you continue damaging the boss.
- Use defensive and control Signs: Quen can provide protection, while Yrden—including alternate Yrden—is recommended by TheSixthAxis.
Choose the post-fight dialogue
After the fight, Reinald’s spirit wants to confront the young deacon. You can ask, “Can you prove you’re Reinald?” to obtain the Forgotten Wolven gear diagrams. Then choose “What now?” to reach the decision about the deacon.
