Duck.ai, Proton Lumo and Brave Leo are three privacy-conscious hosted chatbot options worth comparing. Their companies make different claims about training, retention and where chat history is stored; none of those claims, on its own, proves that a service is completely private or independently audited. Choose based on what happens to your prompts, not just a “private” label.
What to compare before choosing a chatbot
Privacy is not one setting. A chatbot might avoid training on your conversations but still retain them, share prompts with a model provider, or permit limited human review. Check these questions for the exact product, account type and settings you plan to use:

- Training: Can prompts or responses be used to improve models, and is that controlled by a setting or a separate opt-in?
- Retention: How long are chats or related data kept, including after you delete a conversation?
- Human review: Can employees or contractors review conversations, and under what circumstances?
- Recipients: Does the chatbot send prompt content to an outside model provider or bot developer?
- History storage: Is chat history kept on the service’s servers, protected with encryption, or saved locally on your device?
Consumer chatbots, business offerings, APIs, signed-in accounts and individual bots can have different terms. A temporary, incognito or delete control should not be assumed to mean the same thing across services.

Duck.ai: a privacy-focused intermediary for model choices
DuckDuckGo says Duck.ai does not record or store chats by default and strips identifying metadata such as IP addresses before requests go to model providers. It also says its agreements require providers to delete prompts and responses after generating a reply and not train on Duck.ai conversations. That arrangement reduces some exposure according to DuckDuckGo, but it does not mean the prompt stays only with DuckDuckGo: the selected model provider still processes it.
DuckDuckGo lists provider-specific exceptions. For some listed providers, prompt caching may last up to one hour, according to DuckDuckGo’s 2026 policy information. Chats submitted as feedback can be stored and reviewed. Model and provider availability can change, so check Duck.ai’s current disclosures rather than relying on an old model list.

Proton Lumo: encrypted saved conversations
Proton says Lumo saves conversations using zero-access encryption, meaning Proton says it cannot read the saved conversations, and says it does not use user data to train AI models. Its service description offers free access with limits and Lumo Plus with higher or unlimited usage. Those are Proton’s representations, not an independent cryptographic assessment. The available description does not establish that a prompt remains encrypted from the model while the model processes it.

Brave Leo: browser-integrated chat with optional local history
Brave positions Leo as a browser-integrated assistant for tasks such as working with pages and documents. Brave says Leo does not retain or share chats and does not use them for additional model training. Its help information also says chat history may be stored locally on the user’s device, which is a separate consideration from server-side retention. Free use does not require an account; premium access requires an account to verify the subscription.

How popular chatbot policies compare
The major services below illustrate why “does it train on my chats?” is not enough to judge privacy. The claims are scoped to the products and account types named, and policies may change.
ChatGPT: consumer controls differ from business and API defaults
OpenAI says it may use content from consumer services to train models unless the user opts out. OpenAI’s Temporary Chat does not appear in history, use or create memories, or train models. Separately, OpenAI says business and API inputs and outputs are not used for training by default; that business/API default should not be applied to consumer ChatGPT. OpenAI also says authorized personnel or service providers may access content for specified purposes, and says it does not sell user data or share ChatGPT conversations with advertisers.

Claude: opt-in improvement and a safety-review exception
Anthropic says consumer Claude conversations may be used for model improvement when users opt in, when content is flagged for safety review, or through another explicit opt-in. Incognito chats are excluded from model improvement even when the main improvement setting is enabled. Anthropic says qualifying data used for improvement after the setting is enabled may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years, according to its 2026 retention policy. The safety-review circumstance is distinct from routine model-improvement use.
Gemini: activity controls do not erase every reviewed copy
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice applies to signed-in Gemini Apps. Google says Gemini activity auto-delete defaults to 18 months, with options for 3 months, 36 months or indefinite retention. Google also says chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data may be retained for up to three years and are not deleted when a user deletes Gemini activity. Google says Gemini activity is not used to show ads. Connected Google or third-party apps, and work or school accounts, may be subject to additional terms.

Poe: check the privacy indicator for each bot
Poe is a multi-model interface, so privacy depends in part on the bot selected. Poe says chat contents are shared with the underlying model provider. Its privacy center describes official bots with a fully shaded shield as not being used by those providers for model training. Third-party developer bots with a half-shaded shield may share content with developers or use conversations for training. Poe says personal account details are not sent to providers unless users include identifying details in a conversation. Because a bot’s shield can change when permissions are granted, inspect the indicator for the specific bot before sharing sensitive content.

- For an intermediary that says it removes identifying metadata: Consider Duck.ai, while accounting for its model-provider processing and listed exceptions.
- For saved chats described as zero-access encrypted: Consider Proton Lumo, while treating Proton’s encryption and training statements as company claims rather than an independent audit.
- For assistance inside a browser: Consider Brave Leo if its workflow suits you, and decide whether local chat history on your device is acceptable.
- For an existing popular chatbot account: Review that service’s controls and account-specific terms. A temporary or incognito option, a training opt-out, and deletion are separate controls with service-specific effects.
- For a multi-model service: Check the individual bot’s provider and privacy indicator instead of assuming one platform-wide rule applies to every bot.
For any service, avoid entering passwords, payment details, private keys, confidential work material or identifying information unless you have confirmed that the service and your organization’s rules permit it. Removing a name from a prompt is not the same as removing all identifying details.
