Choose the platform that fits your must-play games and your total cost—not the cheapest-looking box. First check which systems run the games you care about, then add the hardware, display and accessories you still need, subscriptions you will actually use, and game purchases over the time you expect to own it. There is no universal cheapest choice: your country, budget, current equipment, and play style can change the result.
Start with the games, not the hardware
Write down the games you most want to play and the people you expect to play with. Check each game’s current platform availability, whether online multiplayer requires a subscription, and whether cross-play works for your group. A platform that cannot run a must-play game—or cannot join the friends you play with—should usually be ruled out before comparing specifications.

For PC games, verify the exact title’s minimum and recommended system requirements; there is no single set of requirements for “PC gaming.” Microsoft directs PC Game Pass users to individual game details for requirements, and notes that availability can vary by plan, platform, and region (PC Game Pass details). Check the game publisher’s page too, especially if resolution, frame rate, or specific hardware features matter to you.

Compare what you still need to spend, not just a console’s advertised price or a PC tower quote. List the following for each platform you are seriously considering:
#1 Best Overall

- FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.
- Hardware: the console or a PC configuration that meets the requirements of your target games at the resolution and performance you want.
- Screen and controls: a TV or monitor, controller or keyboard and mouse, and any headset you need. Count equipment you already own only if it is compatible and suitable.
- Storage and accessories: add these only if your games or setup make them necessary.
- Recurring services: include online multiplayer or a game subscription only if you plan to use it. Confirm current regional terms and prices.
- Games: estimate purchases over your intended ownership period. A subscription catalog is not a saving unless it includes games you actually want and you use it.
Use current local prices for the complete setup. Manufacturer recommended prices, retailer discounts, used listings, and availability are different things; keep them separate and date any comparison. The figures below are U.S. examples, not a universal price ranking.

Sony’s recommended PS5 prices in the United States, effective April 2, 2026, are shown alongside Microsoft’s Xbox information. Sony advises buyers in other territories to check local retailers or PlayStation Direct (Sony’s U.S. price announcement).

Include that cost if you need the service for the way you play; leave it out if you do not. For Xbox, check current plan options and local prices directly rather than assuming a price or benefit from these examples. For either platform, compare the recurring cost with the games and multiplayer access you will actually use.
Price a PC for the games and performance you want
A meaningful PC comparison starts with a target: the specific games, desired resolution and performance, and the components needed to meet those games’ requirements. Price a complete setup, including a monitor and controls if you do not already have suitable ones. The available figures here do not establish a comparable current gaming-PC build price, so a blanket claim that a PC is cheaper or more expensive than a console would be unsupported.

Existing equipment changes the calculation. If you already own a capable PC, monitor, or compatible peripherals, compare the incremental cost of upgrading or adding games—not the cost of starting from nothing. If you are starting fresh, price the whole configuration locally and check each game’s requirements before choosing components. PC Game Pass availability also varies by plan, platform, and region, so verify the exact games and terms that apply to you.
Use this decision path to choose
- Confirm game and friend-group fit. Remove options that do not run your must-play titles or cannot play with the people you want to join, unless cross-play resolves the issue.
- Set your real ceiling. Decide whether it covers hardware alone or the complete setup and expected recurring costs. Include a screen or accessories if you need to buy them.
- Check what you already own. Count a PC, TV, monitor, controller, keyboard, mouse, or headset only if it is compatible and fit for purpose.
- Compare the complete local totals. Use current prices for the exact console model or PC configuration, then add needed services and a realistic game budget for your ownership period.
- Choose the lowest-cost option that meets your needs. If the totals are close, let game availability, multiplayer compatibility, and the value you place on a PC’s broader uses settle the choice.
Which platform makes sense in common budget situations?
You have one must-play game or a fixed friend group
Check platform availability and multiplayer compatibility first. Once that identifies viable systems, compare their complete local setup costs; a lower hardware price is not useful if it fails the main reason you are buying.
Best Value
You already own a capable gaming PC
Compare the cost of any needed upgrade, the games you want, and any service you plan to use against buying a console and its required accessories. Do not price the PC as a new build if you already have suitable equipment.
You are starting from scratch and want the simplest comparison
Price a console setup with the screen and accessories you lack, then price a PC that meets your chosen games’ requirements with its own needed screen and controls. Add recurring services only where relevant. Revisit the result if either setup depends on a discount, unavailable configuration, or unverified game requirement.
You are choosing between a disc-capable and digital console
Compare the models’ current prices and media options against how you expect to obtain games. The prices above do not establish how much either option saves on used games, so do not assume a specific long-term saving without checking local game prices and purchasing options.
