For reliable screenshots of dynamic pages, wait for the specific content or state your application needs—not a fixed delay or networkidle—then make volatile visuals predictable with screenshot options such as disabled animations, masks, or injected CSS. Choose viewport versus full-page capture and CSS-pixel versus device-pixel scale to match your use case, and keep the rendering environment consistent for visual comparisons.
Wait for the page state you actually need
A browser lifecycle event does not prove that an application has finished rendering the content you want to capture. A page can fire load while client-side work is still updating the interface. Playwright discourages using networkidle as a general test-readiness rule; it means there have been no network connections for at least 500 ms, not that the page is visually or functionally ready. Wait for a meaningful, page-specific condition: for example, a results heading to become visible, a loading indicator to disappear, or a particular state to appear. There is no universal selector or delay that guarantees readiness on every dynamic site. Replace the example selector below with one that represents the content your own page must show.

Use stable screenshot options
The appropriate settings depend on whether you need a repeatable visual comparison or a faithful capture of motion and device-pixel detail. Explicitly set options that matter to your workflow rather than relying on defaults that differ between screenshot APIs.

For page screenshots, Playwright’s injected style can affect Shadow DOM and inner frames. Mask or hide only content that is genuinely irrelevant to the test; suppressing a changing region can also conceal a regression you intended to catch. Keep visual comparisons reproducible
Screenshot output can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and check baselines in the same environment wherever practical, and keep relevant browser and execution settings consistent. A baseline created under different rendering conditions may differ even when the page’s intended appearance has not changed. Playwright describes these factors in its visual comparison documentation.
Troubleshoot common screenshot problems
- The screenshot catches a loading or incomplete state: wait for a locator or assertion that represents the content or state under test. Do not treat
load, an arbitrary pause, ornetworkidleas a universal readiness signal. - Repeated captures differ around a clock, avatar, or live counter: decide whether that region matters. Mask its locator or hide/restyle it with screenshot
styleor assertionstylePath; leave it visible if changes there are part of what you need to test. - Animations cause mismatches: set
animations: 'disabled'forpage.screenshot(). Screenshot assertions already default to disabled animations; check which API you are using before adding overrides. - The output image is unexpectedly large or has different dimensions: check
scale. A page screenshot defaults to device-pixel scale, whereas screenshot assertions default to CSS-pixel scale. - A comparison fails only on another machine or CI runner: align the OS, browser version, settings, hardware/headless configuration, and other rendering conditions with the environment that produced the baseline.
