For a smoother PS Portal session, start with the network: connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet if possible, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal, and check the Portal’s network status while a problem is happening. Then compare the Portal’s 1080p Standard and 1080p High Quality maximum-resolution settings on the same connection. Sony recommends a connection of at least 15 Mbps, but that is guidance—not a guarantee of smooth play.
Set up the PS5 and Portal before adjusting picture quality
A connection problem can look like a stream-quality problem. First make sure the console is configured to accept Remote Play and, if needed, wake from Rest Mode.

- On PS5, go to Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- Make sure the PS5 is online and signed into the same account as the Portal.
- To start Remote Play while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Install available system software updates on both devices. Sony’s system software page lists Portal version 7.0.2 as a performance and stability update and says version 7.0.0 added 1080p High Quality. Those version details can become outdated as new updates arrive.
Improve the network path first
PlayStation Support recommends connecting the PS5 to the internet with a wired connection. If the PS5 has to use Wi-Fi, Sony recommends putting the PS5 and Portal on the same Wi-Fi network. These are recommended setup choices, not a promise that every home network will behave the same way.

Ethernet avoids relying on the PS5’s Wi-Fi link. If the console is near the router or can be connected by cable, this is Sony’s recommended arrangement.
- Connect the Portal to 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Sony recommends 5 GHz for the Portal. If the router’s band-steering feature shifts the Portal between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, Sony suggests disabling band steering if possible.
- Check the connection, not just the speed rating. Sony recommends high-speed internet of at least 15 Mbps. This is a general recommendation from PlayStation Support, not a minimum that guarantees a stable session in every home or on every public network.
See PlayStation Support’s PS Portal Remote Play setup guidance. Public Wi-Fi can be harder to control, and network quality may affect play; Sony also notes that some public networks may not support Portal connections, including some 5 GHz networks because of regional regulations.

Choose a maximum resolution based on stability
During Remote Play, the Portal adjusts video quality automatically according to the internet connection. The quick menu’s Max Resolution setting lets you choose a ceiling; it does not guarantee that the stream will sustain that resolution.

To compare them fairly, change only the maximum-resolution setting and test both under similar network conditions. Keep the option that gives you the better balance of image detail and stability. Sony’s Remote Play guidance describes the automatic quality adjustment and the two maximum-resolution choices.

Use the Portal’s diagnostics while the issue is occurring
Open the Portal quick menu during Remote Play and check network status and troubleshooting information. Depending on the activity or software version, the relevant option may appear under Tools & Info or as a network-status or troubleshooting item. Checking during a stutter is more useful than relying on a status readout from a time when the connection was working normally. PlayStation’s quick-menu instructions cover the available controls.

Troubleshoot a stutter or connection failure
- Check the Portal’s network status and tips in the quick menu. Note whether the issue is happening during the check.
- See whether other devices can use the same Wi-Fi. If they also cannot connect, the access point or internet service may be involved. Sony’s error guidance advises contacting the internet service provider when Wi-Fi fails across devices.
- Review the Portal’s Wi-Fi or access-point settings. If the problem seems limited to the Portal, try another Wi-Fi network to see whether the behavior changes.
- If many devices are connected, disconnect some temporarily. Sony lists this as a troubleshooting step for a Wi-Fi error; it is not a universal fix.
- Recheck PS5 Remote Play and Rest Mode settings. A console that is offline, signed into a different account, or not configured for Remote Play may prevent a session from starting even if the Portal’s Wi-Fi is working.
For Wi-Fi error steps, consult PlayStation Support’s PS Portal connection troubleshooting page. If you are on public Wi-Fi, network quality, access restrictions, or compatibility may be outside your control.

Which settings affect smoothness—and which are for comfort?
Network setup, the maximum-resolution choice, and connection diagnostics are the relevant controls for addressing stutter or instability. The quick menu also includes Display Brightness, while controller settings let you adjust vibration and trigger-effect intensity. Those change visibility or feel; Sony’s guidance does not identify them as ways to make the Remote Play stream smoother.
The Portal also accepts wired headsets and earbuds with a 3.5 mm audio input. That can be useful for listening privately, but it is not a streaming-performance fix; see Sony’s PS Portal audio guidance.
