For most players, a PlayStation 5 with a disc drive is the best single console for the mainline Uncharted games. It plays the PS4 Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and runs the PS5 Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, which includes Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Choose the Digital Edition if your games are digital; choose a PS4 if you want a lower-cost route to the same collections.
Which PlayStation console should you choose?
| Console | What it can play | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 with disc drive | Digital PS4 games, compatible PS4 discs, and the native PS5 Legacy of Thieves Collection. It does not play PS3 discs. | Most players, especially anyone with PS4 game discs or a mixed disc-and-digital library. |
| PS5 Digital Edition | Digital PS4 games and the PS5 Legacy of Thieves Collection; it cannot read PS4 discs. | Players who buy games digitally and do not need to use PS4 discs. |
| PS4 | The Nathan Drake Collection, plus PS4 versions of Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy. | Players seeking a budget route to the remastered mainline campaigns. |
| PS3 | Original PS3 releases of the early games. | Players who specifically want the original PS3 versions or already own the console; it is not required for the first three stories. |
Sony says PS5 supports “the overwhelming majority” of PS4 games, while explicitly excluding PS3 discs. Check the compatibility and edition details for the particular game or disc before buying: PlayStation’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance.

Which Uncharted games are included in each collection?
The first three campaigns: The Nathan Drake Collection
Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection brings together the single-player campaigns of Drake’s Fortune, Among Thieves, and Drake’s Deception. It is a PS4 title, and its official PlayStation Store listing says it is playable on PS5, with the caveat that some PS4 features may be absent. See the PlayStation Store listing.

Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy: Legacy of Thieves

Does the PS5 Digital Edition work if you own Uncharted on disc?
No: the Digital Edition has no disc drive, so it cannot use PS4 game discs. A PS5 with a disc drive is the practical choice if you want to play a compatible PS4 disc on the console.
PlayStation’s US page describes a paid upgrade to Legacy of Thieves for owners of Uncharted 4, The Lost Legacy, or their digital bundle. For a qualifying PS4 disc, the disc must be inserted whenever you download or play the PS5 digital version. A PS4 disc owner cannot use that disc-based upgrade with a PS5 Digital Edition. The page also says PlayStation Plus members who claimed Uncharted 4 through the subscription are not eligible for the digital upgrade it describes. Upgrade terms, prices, and subscription availability may vary by region and change over time; check your local PlayStation Store.

Are higher frame rates or a 4K display necessary?
No. The advertised PS5 display modes are optional, not requirements for playing Legacy of Thieves. PlayStation lists Fidelity mode with a 30 fps target, Performance with a 60 fps target, and Performance+ with a 120 fps target at 1080p. The listed 4K and 120 Hz modes require a compatible display; choosing a mode does not change which games the console can run. Check the collection page for its mode and display details.
What if you want Uncharted multiplayer?
Legacy of Thieves is single-player and does not include the multiplayer feature found in the original PS4 versions. If multiplayer is important, look specifically at the PS4 release rather than assuming it carries over to the PS5 remaster; details are on the official collection page.

Buying decision by player type
- Choose a PS5 with a disc drive if you want one current console for the PS4 collection and PS5 remaster, particularly if you own compatible PS4 discs.
- Choose a PS5 Digital Edition if you purchase digitally and do not need to use PS4 discs.
- Choose a PS4 if you want the two collections and their mainline campaigns without buying a PS5.
- Keep or buy a PS3 only for a specific reason, such as wanting the original PS3 releases; the PS4 collection makes that hardware unnecessary for the first three campaigns.
Console prices and used-game costs change, so compare current local listings rather than relying on a fixed price recommendation. This guide covers the mainline console releases evidenced by the official collection pages; it does not establish compatibility for every franchise spin-off.
