Best PC VR Settings for Smooth Performance and Less Motion Sickness

There is no universal PC VR preset for comfort. Choose a sustainable refresh rate, adjust resolution and game settings based on diagnostics, and stop if symptoms occur.

There is no universal PC VR preset that prevents motion sickness. The most useful starting point is a refresh rate your PC can sustain, followed by deliberate resolution and graphics adjustments guided by frame-time diagnostics. Smoother frame delivery may remove one source of discomfort, but it cannot guarantee that you will feel well in VR.

What settings matter most for smooth PC VR?

Start with consistent frame delivery, not the highest refresh-rate or resolution slider. Your result depends on the headset, runtime, game, drivers, and PC. A setting that works in one game or headset may not work in another.

  • Refresh rate sets the display cadence and the time available to render each frame.
  • Render resolution affects image detail and GPU workload; its controls and behavior vary by runtime and application.
  • In-game graphics settings can add substantial workload. Lower demanding options when diagnostics show missed frames.
  • Reprojection or motion smoothing may serve as a runtime-specific fallback, but can introduce visual artifacts and does not make missed native frames disappear.

Change one setting layer at a time, then test the same demanding scene. That makes it easier to tell which adjustment helped.

What is a good refresh rate and resolution to aim for when playing in VR?

Choose a refresh rate supported by your headset and application that your PC can sustain in the game you actually play. A higher rate gives each frame less rendering time. Meta Horizon OS Developers describes the relationship this way: “A higher refresh rate enables higher frame rates, brighter output, and improved color clarity.” Its documentation also cautions that the app must do its work in a shorter time at higher rates.

Refresh rate Frame time available Qualification
72 Hz 13.9 ms Meta Horizon OS Developers’ published frame budget
90 Hz 11.1 ms Meta Horizon OS Developers’ published frame budget
120 Hz 8.3 ms Meta Horizon OS Developers’ published frame budget
207 Hz 4.8 ms Meta Quest 3-specific extended-rate example
240 Hz 4.2 ms Meta Quest 3-specific example using display scaling, which lowers rendered resolution

These are frame budgets documented by Meta, not universal PC VR targets or evidence of a refresh-rate threshold that prevents sickness. Rates above 207 Hz on Quest 3 involve display scaling and trade image quality for bandwidth; do not apply those device-specific examples to other headsets. Meta’s Set Display Refresh Rates documentation was updated August 27, 2026.

A game-specific Steam announcement recommends consistent 90 Hz for that game and lowering graphics if it cannot be sustained. That is a game-specific baseline, not a universal standard or a proven anti-nausea threshold. Steam’s game announcement is useful as an example of how a title may state its own target.

For resolution, begin at your runtime’s ordinary or default render resolution rather than assuming one multiplier is right for every headset. If performance tools show missed frames, reduce render resolution or costly in-game settings, one at a time. Meta’s Oculus Debug Tool documents a pixels-per-display-pixel override and an adaptive GPU performance scale; availability and interaction of controls differ by runtime and application. See Meta’s Oculus Debug Tool documentation.

How to tune settings in a reproducible order

  1. Check supported refresh rates. Use the headset and runtime’s available settings, and select a rate the PC can maintain in your intended game. Do not raise it merely because the menu offers a higher value.
  2. Start with default render resolution. Load a demanding scene. If diagnostics show missed frames, lower render resolution or a costly game setting, then test again before changing another layer.
  3. Watch frame timing in the actual game. In SteamVR, open the Advanced Frame Timing graph and look for spikes. In Meta’s Oculus Debug Tool, use the performance HUD or frame-drop indicator. These tools help distinguish frame-delivery trouble from a visual impression alone.
  4. Test reprojection only if available. Try the runtime’s options with the same game and scene, and compare perceived smoothness against artifacts. Behavior varies by runtime; do not assume one mode is best for every setup.
  5. Stop if symptoms occur. If you experience nausea, dizziness, motion sickness, or eyestrain, discontinue play and try again later rather than pushing through.

How to tell whether the problem is frame timing or tracking

A wobble, drift, or apparent movement is not proof that the PC is simply delivering too few frames. Use frame-time tools to look for spikes and dropped frames; SteamVR says spikes commonly indicate CPU performance trouble. Meta’s Oculus Debug Tool offers performance and frame-drop diagnostics. If frame delivery looks consistent but the view still drifts or moves unexpectedly, tracking may also be involved. These diagnostics help narrow the cause; they do not make every symptom a frame-rate problem.

When should you use reprojection or motion smoothing?

Reprojection is a runtime-specific fallback, not a substitute for rendering every frame at the display’s native cadence. Meta documents PC Asynchronous Spacewarp modes in the Oculus Debug Tool. Microsoft describes Windows Mixed Reality motion reprojection for SteamVR operating with the game at half the display rate in the configuration it documents. Those behaviors are not interchangeable across platforms, and either approach can change artifacts or perceived motion. Test the option on your own headset and game rather than treating it as a universal fix. See Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR guidance.

What to do if VR makes you feel sick

Stop playing if nausea, dizziness, motion sickness, or eyestrain occurs. Valve Steam Support advises: “If you or any of your family experience these symptoms, please discontinue use and test the issue at a later time.” Its gameplay support guidance also notes that playing in smaller increments may be beneficial. This is practical support advice, not a clinical protocol. Read Valve Steam Support’s guidance on nausea or motion sickness during gameplay.
