The right fix depends on what is slowing your particular machine. Start by identifying the bottleneck, then make reversible changes and judge them against the same workload.
Find out what is making the laptop slow
Before changing settings, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc. On the Processes and Performance tabs, look for sustained high CPU, memory, or disk use. Check which app or process is responsible rather than closing items at random. Microsoft notes that slow performance can have several causes, including too many startup apps, low free storage, outdated software, or hardware that no longer meets current needs (Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance).

If one app is consistently consuming resources, update it, close it when you are not using it, or investigate its own settings. Avoid ending unfamiliar system processes: that can interrupt Windows or a feature you rely on without fixing the underlying cause.
Apply low-risk changes in a useful order
1. Check for Windows updates and malware
Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Review optional driver updates where appropriate, and follow the laptop maker’s driver guidance for your exact model. If malware is a concern, run a quick scan in Windows Security. Updates or a scan will not solve every slowdown, but they are sensible checks before tuning other settings.

2. Disable only unnecessary startup apps
In Task Manager, open Startup apps and review what launches when you sign in. Disable only apps you do not need to start automatically. An app used for security, accessibility, backups, or hardware controls may be important even if it is not needed by everyone. Removing unnecessary startup work can make sign-in less busy; it is not a guaranteed overall speed increase.
Some apps also have background-permission controls in Settings. Restrict background activity only for apps that do not need to sync, send notifications, or perform another task while closed.

3. Make space using Windows storage tools
When the drive is nearly full, open Settings > System > Storage and review Storage Sense or Temporary files. Check what Windows proposes to remove before confirming. Do not manually delete unfamiliar folders or files to try to free space.

Search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows. In the Performance Options window, Adjust for best performance reduces visual effects. That may make the interface feel more responsive, but it also makes Windows look less polished. If you prefer a compromise, select individual effects instead of turning them all off.

5. Use the power mode that fits the situation
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Best performance can allow the CPU to run at higher performance when needed, but it uses more power, can drain the battery faster, and may make the laptop warmer. Use it when performance matters and power is available; choose a more efficient mode when battery runtime matters. Microsoft also describes Best Power Efficiency and Energy saver as options designed to reduce power use, not as unconditional speed fixes (Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guidance).
6. Run Windows’ built-in drive optimization
Search for Defragment and Optimize Drives, select the drive, and choose Optimize. Use the built-in tool rather than manual defragmentation commands or third-party “optimizer” utilities.

7. Restart and reassess
Close unused apps and browser tabs, then restart if the laptop remains slow. Try the same ordinary task afterward and check Task Manager again. If you want to report a measured before-and-after result, identify the laptop and Windows build, list the changes, and explain how you measured performance; these settings do not establish a standard or guaranteed speedup.

Software changes help only when they address the cause. Microsoft cautions that “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.” If the laptop remains slow after basic maintenance, its processor, memory, storage, or another hardware limitation may be the ceiling. A hardware upgrade can be a longer-term option, but what is compatible or serviceable depends on the exact laptop.

Age alone also does not determine whether a laptop meets Windows 11 requirements. Microsoft’s published requirements include a compatible 64-bit processor at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, TPM 2.0, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a display larger than 9 inches at 720p or better. The 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage figures are installation minimums, not a promise of comfortable performance. App needs can be higher, and actual free-space needs vary. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 compatibility documentation for the applicable requirements; meeting minimums does not guarantee that a particular laptop will feel fast.
