1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere is no single best preset for every open-world RPG. The right changes depend on whether you have low frame rates, stuttering or hitching, screen tearing, sluggish controls, or long loading times. Check the PC and game setup first, then change one setting at a time and retest so you can see what actually helps.
Start by identifying what feels wrong
“Smoother performance” can describe several different problems. A low average frame rate means the game is rendering slowly; stuttering or hitching means delivery is uneven; tearing is a display-sync issue; input lag is a responsiveness issue; and long loading or delayed world streaming points to storage or asset-loading constraints. These symptoms can overlap, but they do not all call for the same setting.

- Low frame rate: Test graphics workload and, where relevant, CPU-heavy settings.
- Stuttering or hitching: Check background load and frame pacing as well as graphics quality.
- Tearing or sluggish controls: Compare V-Sync, a frame cap, and supported variable refresh rate (VRR) options.
- Long loading or slow streaming: Check where the game is installed; a faster drive may help loading, not guarantee higher in-scene FPS.
Keep a note of the original settings and make one change per test. That makes it easier to keep a useful improvement and undo a change that makes the game look or feel worse.

Check the PC, GPU selection, and background load
First compare your system with the specific game’s requirements. On a laptop or a computer with more than one GPU, confirm the game is using the intended high-performance GPU rather than an energy-saving option. Bethesda’s Starfield PC performance guidance also points to hardware, GPU choice, and power-saving modes as checks for performance trouble.

Close applications you do not need while playing, especially ones using significant CPU or memory. Obsidian notes that browsers with many open tabs can consume resources; Bethesda also recommends testing with overlays disabled when investigating low frame rates or other performance problems. Treat closing apps or disabling overlays as a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed permanent fix.
Update your graphics driver if it is out of date. If graphics-related problems remain, Obsidian recommends trying a clean driver installation and restarting the PC. Its support guidance does not promise a particular FPS gain, so judge the result in your own game rather than expecting a fixed uplift.
Reduce GPU workload without lowering everything
If the game is GPU-limited, try upscaling before making a large drop in display resolution. An upscaler renders the scene internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs a larger image. The Outer Worlds 2 support guide names TSR, NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, and Intel XeSS; which options appear depends on the game, GPU, driver, and version. Try available quality modes and compare image clarity and performance in the same area.

If upscaling is unavailable or does not help enough, reduce demanding settings selectively. Obsidian’s examples for The Outer Worlds 2 include shadows, reflections, global illumination, foliage, view distance, visual effects, textures, and crowd density. This is a game-specific troubleshooting list, not a universal ranking for every RPG.
- Dense vegetation feels slow: Test foliage quality.
- Populated areas feel slow: Test crowd density.
- Expensive lighting or reflections dominate a scene: Test shadows, reflections, or global illumination individually.
- Distant scenery or effects are costly: Test view distance or visual effects.
- Image quality is the priority: Avoid lowering every setting by default; compare the visual cost of each change before keeping it.
Obsidian recommends stepping down an overall preset or switching to custom settings, then retesting. Its support article says, “Each step can improve framerate or stability, often with little visual sacrifice.” That advice applies to its The Outer Worlds 2 troubleshooting guidance; another game may respond differently.
Use CPU and GPU behavior to choose what to test
When a scene feels slow, consider whether the GPU is doing most of the work or whether CPU-heavy game logic may be limiting performance. Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds 2 guidance suggests testing ray tracing and crowd density when GPU load is low while CPU usage is high. Ray tracing can have variable effects depending on hardware and scene complexity, so do not assume that turning it off is always the right answer. Change one relevant option and compare the same scene.

Tune frame pacing, tearing, and responsiveness separately
A frame cap can make delivery more consistent and prevent the GPU from working harder than necessary. Obsidian suggests starting with a cap near the display’s refresh rate, but the useful value depends on the game’s stable performance, the display, and whether VRR is available. NVIDIA documents a per-game maximum frame-rate control; AMD describes frame limiting as a way to reduce power use, heat, and fan noise in supported situations.
V-Sync can reduce screen tearing, but it can add input latency. Test it off if responsiveness is more important or if it appears to contribute to stutter. If the display and game support VRR—such as G-SYNC or FreeSync—check that compatibility and the game’s sync behavior before settling on a combination. The tradeoff is between clean image presentation, consistent pacing, and responsive controls, not simply “more FPS.”
Frame generation is conditional, not a general fix for low performance. For The Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian recommends using it only when supported, notes it may feel sluggish below roughly 45 FPS, and advises adjusting the frame cap when it is active. That threshold and control advice are specific to this game’s guidance, not a universal minimum for every frame-generation implementation.

Check storage when loading or streaming is the problem
If the main complaint is long loading or slow asset streaming, check the game’s install drive. Obsidian recommends an M.2 NVMe drive over a SATA SSD for The Outer Worlds 2 and advises against installing it on a mechanical hard drive; Bethesda also recommends an SSD for Starfield. These are storage recommendations for loading and streaming, not evidence that an SSD will raise average in-scene frame rates.
If you are considering an M.2 NVMe SSD, verify that your PC supports the drive and has a compatible available slot, and check capacity against the game’s needs before buying. The cited guidance does not establish a particular drive model or a guaranteed performance gain.

Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games applies to DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. Undo changes that do not help
When a tweak worsens image quality, pacing, or responsiveness, restore the original game setting and test another variable. Prefer per-game settings over broad global driver overrides when only one RPG needs adjustment. AMD’s Radeon reference documents resetting global or individual application settings. Keeping changes isolated makes troubleshooting more reliable and avoids altering other games unintentionally.
A practical order for testing
- Check game requirements, GPU selection, and laptop power mode.
- Close unnecessary applications; temporarily test without overlays if hitching or low FPS persists.
- Update the graphics driver and restart; consider a clean installation if graphics problems remain.
- Try an available upscaler before substantially reducing resolution.
- Lower one demanding game setting at a time, guided by the scene and apparent bottleneck.
- Test a frame cap, V-Sync, and supported VRR settings for pacing, tearing, and latency.
- Investigate the install drive if loading or streaming—not in-scene FPS—is the issue.
- Restore defaults for any change that does not improve the symptom you set out to fix.
The detailed settings examples and frame-generation advice above come from Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds 2 performance guide, last updated October 29, 2025. Display and driver controls vary by game and hardware; consult the relevant Microsoft, AMD, and NVIDIA references for their stated compatibility and settings details.
