The best RDR2 settings are the ones that deliver a consistent frame rate on your PC, resolution and game build. There is no source-backed universal preset: Rockstar says that each option can affect performance differently depending on system configuration. Start with a measured baseline, let the in-game quality slider make a first pass, then tune the advanced options in Rockstar’s recommended order and verify every meaningful change with the built-in benchmark.
This method is more reliable than copying a settings screenshot. It helps you keep expensive visual features that your hardware can handle, remove the settings that actually cause slowdowns on your system, and distinguish a rendering problem from an ordinary performance limit.

What “smooth” should mean in RDR2
A smooth result is not simply the highest average FPS shown by an overlay. Judge three things together:
- Frame-rate level: whether the game reaches the rate your display and input preferences require.
- Consistency: whether camera movement and travel remain even, without sudden hitching or long frame-time spikes.
- Image quality: whether the changes preserve the detail you care about at your actual play resolution.
Rockstar’s published minimum and recommended specifications establish whether a PC is eligible to run the game; they do not promise a particular frame rate, resolution or quality preset. Requirements can also change with downloadable content and programming changes. Treat your own benchmark and a repeatable gameplay scene as the authority for final decisions.

Set a baseline before changing anything
Write down your current resolution, display refresh rate, graphics API, quality-slider position and advanced settings. Then run the game long enough to reproduce the problem. A busy town, a ride through a forest and a weather-heavy scene can expose different limits, so use the same route or benchmark run whenever you compare settings.
- Launch RDR2 and choose the resolution you actually intend to play, rather than testing at a lower resolution and assuming the result will transfer.
- Record the current graphics API, quality setting and any frame-rate cap or synchronization option you use.
- Run Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test. Note the reported performance and whether the run shows visible hitching, texture problems or unusual pauses.
- Play the same repeatable scene for several minutes. Record average performance and consistency in your monitoring tool, but do not treat one number as a universal result for other PCs.
- Change one option, or one closely related group, and run the same benchmark and scene again. Keep a simple log so you can undo a change that improves one location but harms another.
This controlled loop is important because a setting that looks harmless in a menu can interact with your GPU memory, processor workload, resolution and current game build. Rockstar’s April 30, 2024 performance-tuning guidance specifically recommends experimenting with advanced settings and running the benchmark to confirm the balance between performance and quality.
Make comparisons that answer one question
Before each test, decide what you are trying to learn. For example: “Does lowering Reflection Quality improve this run without a visual compromise I notice?” Keep the resolution, route and other settings fixed so the result can be compared fairly. If you lower several unrelated options together, a better benchmark cannot tell you which change mattered; if it worsens, you will not know which one to restore.
Record both the result and your visual judgment. A small average-FPS change may not be worthwhile if it makes an image detail noticeably worse, while a setting that produces no meaningful difference on your machine can be left alone. Repeat a surprising result before building the rest of the profile around it. The benchmark is useful for controlled comparisons, but normal play matters too: confirm the final balance in the places where you actually notice slowdowns.
Use the quality slider for the quickest first pass
RDR2’s in-game quality slider is the fastest way to establish a sensible starting point. Rockstar says it analyzes the PC’s capabilities and adjusts background parameters according to the selected resolution and whether you favor performance or quality.
Use the slider after selecting your real resolution. If the game is clearly too slow, move it toward performance, apply the change, and run the benchmark. If the result has headroom, move it toward quality and test again. The slider is an optimization starting point, not a guarantee that every advanced option is ideal for your particular GPU, CPU or memory capacity.
Once the slider gives you a usable baseline, switch to manual tuning. Manual changes let you protect features that matter most to you—for example, keeping texture detail while reducing a costly lighting or reflection setting—rather than lowering everything equally.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Think of the slider as a first pass rather than a final verdict. It is useful when you want a quick starting configuration, but it cannot know which particular visual compromise you find acceptable. If you prefer a sharper-looking result, for instance, test whether moving the slider back toward quality still meets your performance goal. If you prefer steadier motion, test the performance side and then selectively restore options that have little effect in your own runs.

Rockstar’s recommended manual tuning order
Rockstar groups the settings below as the first options to adjust, followed by a second group for finer refinement. The sequence is a practical order for experimentation, not a published ranking of frame-rate gains. Rockstar’s warning applies throughout: “Depending on system configuration, different settings will have different impacts on game performance.”
First-priority settings
- Multisampling Anti-Aliasing (MSAA)
- Reflection Quality
- Water Quality
- Volumetric Quality
- Near Volumetric Resolution
Lower one of these settings, apply it, and repeat the benchmark. If you are trying to preserve image quality, do not lower every option at once: the test will no longer tell you which change helped. Compare the same scene at the same resolution, and inspect moving edges, water, reflections, fog and near-camera lighting rather than judging only a static screenshot.
Use the scene to make each comparison relevant. Water Quality is easiest to judge where water is visible; Reflection Quality where reflective surfaces appear; and the volumetric options where fog, smoke, clouds or light shafts are part of the view. This is a way to notice an image tradeoff, not a claim that any one setting will produce a fixed FPS gain. Keep the option at its higher value if the visual difference matters to you and the measured performance remains acceptable.
Further-refinement settings
- Temporal Anti-Aliasing
- Texture Quality
- Lighting Quality
- Shadow Quality
- Screen Space Ambient Occlusion
- Anisotropic Filtering
- Far Shadow Quality
- Tessellation Quality
- Fast Approximate Anti-Aliasing (FXAA)
- Volumetric Lighting Quality
- Triple Buffering
- Global Illumination Quality
- Particle Quality
- Mirror Quality
- Far Volumetric Resolution
Work down this list only after the first group is giving you an acceptable result. A setting may have little effect on your PC, while another may be the difference between steady motion and recurring stutter. Keep a change only when the benchmark or repeatable scene shows a worthwhile improvement without an image-quality penalty you notice during play.
Do not treat the position in this second list as a promise that an option is unimportant. It is Rockstar’s suggested refinement sequence, while the actual cost depends on the system. If a remaining problem is visible only in one kind of scene, test the matching setting there; otherwise, continue in order and avoid spending time on options that do not alter your results.
A practical image-quality strategy
Use the following decision process rather than a fixed “low,” “medium” or “ultra” recipe:
If the frame rate is low everywhere
Confirm that the resolution is the one you intend to use, then start with the quality slider and the first-priority settings. Test MSAA, reflections, water and volumetrics before spending time on small secondary details. If the benchmark remains below your target after those changes, continue through Rockstar’s refinement list in order.

Test Temporal Anti-Aliasing and Texture Quality carefully. Keep the highest texture setting that does not produce instability or video-memory errors on your configuration, and compare moving foliage, clothing and distant geometry in the same scene. Anti-aliasing changes can alter edge clarity and motion appearance even when the frame-rate reading changes little.

If towns, weather or interiors cause drops
Use the benchmark and a matching gameplay scene to isolate the workload. Volumetric Quality, Near Volumetric Resolution and Volumetric Lighting Quality are logical candidates to test when fog, smoke, clouds or light shafts coincide with the slowdown. Reflection, water and lighting options can matter more in scenes that contain those effects. Lower only the option that produces a measurable improvement, then check another scene to make sure the change is not overly specific.
If distant detail is the problem
Compare Far Shadow Quality, Far Volumetric Resolution, Tessellation Quality and related distance-dependent options. Inspect the transition while moving, not only while standing still. Keep a setting higher when its visual benefit is obvious and its measured cost is acceptable on your system.
How to stop RDR2 stuttering on PC
Stutter has several possible causes, so use a branch-and-test approach:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Repeatability check: run the same benchmark twice. If the hitch appears in the same section, it is more likely tied to a particular workload or setting than to a random background event.
- One-change rule: revert the last change if stutter worsened, then test a different option. Changing a dozen settings at once removes the evidence needed to diagnose the cause.
- Video-memory warning: if the game reports that selected settings exceed available video memory, reduce the settings contributing to that warning and restart the test. Rockstar’s historical update notes document crashes when graphics settings exceeded available video memory; those notes describe past fixes, not a claim that every current build has the same defect.
- Long-session behavior: compare a short benchmark with a longer play session. Historical Rockstar notes describe a DirectX 12 memory leak that could increase RAM use during extended sessions and say it was fixed in the corresponding update. Do not assume the historical issue remains in a current build, but watch for rising memory use if your symptoms appear only after prolonged play.
- Background interference: close unnecessary overlays or recording tools temporarily and repeat the identical test. If the result changes, re-enable them one at a time to identify the conflict.
Do not describe a setting as a universal stutter fix. The useful outcome is a reproducible change on your own configuration, confirmed by the benchmark and normal gameplay.
Also separate a repeatable performance hitch from a launch or rendering failure. If the game will not start, changing quality options through the normal menu may not be possible; Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_INIT support guidance covers switching the graphics API and resetting settings files. If the game starts and the problem appears only in demanding scenes, return to the controlled setting tests instead of assuming an API change will fix it.
Vulkan or DirectX 12: which is smoother?
There is no source-backed universal winner. Rockstar’s support article for the ERR_GFX_INIT launch error allows switching between Vulkan and DirectX 12 through the advanced graphics settings in system.xml. That is troubleshooting guidance, not a claim that one API is faster.
Rockstar’s historical update notes also record configuration-specific problems involving both APIs, including Vulkan stuttering on some multi-GPU systems, a DirectX 12 memory-leak issue during extended sessions and crashes when settings exceeded available video memory. The notes state that the cited issues were fixed in their corresponding updates. They do not prove that those problems remain in current builds or that either API is generally superior.
A fair API comparison
- Save your current graphics settings and note the API in use.
- Run the benchmark and the same repeatable gameplay scene.
- Switch the API in the advanced graphics settings or, when troubleshooting a launch error, change the relevant value in
system.xmlas Rockstar directs. Back up the file before editing it. - Restart the game if required, then use exactly the same resolution, quality settings and scene.
- Compare average performance, frame-time consistency, visible rendering errors and launch reliability.
Keep the API that behaves better on your hardware. If one choice fixes a launch or rendering problem but is not faster, reliability is still a valid reason to use it.

In other words, “which API is faster?” is only answerable for a specific PC and current game build. If neither API has caused a problem and your benchmark does not show a repeatable difference, there is no reason in Rockstar’s guidance to switch just to chase a supposed universal advantage. If you do compare, change only the API between the two runs and preserve the same test conditions.

A PC that meets the minimum requirements is not thereby guaranteed a particular FPS, and the recommended column does not specify a target resolution or preset. The listed graphics cards also have different amounts of video memory: 2 GB and 3 GB at minimum, and 6 GB and 4 GB in the recommended examples. Those figures help explain why the same slider position may not suit every eligible configuration, but they do not predict a precise result by themselves.
Rockstar notes that requirements may change with downloadable content and programming changes. If your PC meets the listed specifications but performance is poor, use the current in-game benchmark and your actual workload to tune settings rather than assuming that the requirements table is a frame-rate promise.
When to reset settings instead of endlessly tuning
If a graphics change causes a launch failure, corrupted-looking output or settings that will not apply, use Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_INIT troubleshooting guidance. Updating graphics drivers and resetting settings files are among the support article’s suggested steps. Preserve a backup of any file before resetting or editing it, then rebuild your settings from the baseline rather than importing every previous value at once.
After a reset, select the actual play resolution, use the quality slider, run the benchmark and resume the one-change workflow. This produces a clean comparison and prevents an old, unstable configuration from contaminating every later test.

Rockstar’s support article, last updated June 12, 2024, treats API switching as one troubleshooting path for a graphics initialization error—not as a general speed tweak. If you are following the system.xml route, change only the relevant API value, retain a copy of the original file and compare launch behavior before making other changes. For a game that launches normally, the in-game graphics menu and benchmark are the more direct tuning route.
Best Value
A repeatable checklist for your final profile
- Target resolution and display mode are selected before testing.
- The quality slider has been tested as a starting point.
- MSAA, reflections, water, volumetrics and near volumetric resolution were evaluated first.
- Secondary settings were changed individually or in tightly related groups.
- The same benchmark run and gameplay scene were used for comparisons.
- Average performance and hitching were both considered.
- Video-memory warnings were treated as a reason to lower settings, not as a number to ignore.
- Vulkan and DirectX 12 were compared only when there was a practical reason, using identical settings.
- The final profile was tested during a normal extended play session, not only in the menu benchmark.
Bottom line
For smooth RDR2 performance, begin with the quality slider, then tune MSAA, Reflection Quality, Water Quality, Volumetric Quality and Near Volumetric Resolution in that order. Continue through Rockstar’s refinement list only as needed, changing one option at a time and validating every decision with Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test. Compare Vulkan and DirectX 12 on your own PC rather than trusting a universal recommendation, because Rockstar’s documented behavior and fixes are configuration-specific.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best PC settings for smooth performance in Red Dead Redemption 2?
There is no universal best preset. Start with Rockstar’s quality slider at your intended resolution, then test MSAA, Reflection Quality, Water Quality, Volumetric Quality and Near Volumetric Resolution in order. Run the same benchmark and gameplay scene after changes, and keep the balance that works on your PC.
Which RDR2 graphics settings should I lower first for more FPS?
Rockstar’s first-priority tuning group is MSAA, Reflection Quality, Water Quality, Volumetric Quality and Near Volumetric Resolution. This is a recommended experiment order, not a ranking of guaranteed FPS gains; measure each change on your system.
Recommended Free Tools
Is Vulkan or DirectX 12 faster in RDR2?
Rockstar’s support guidance does not establish a universal speed winner. Compare both APIs only if you have a launch/rendering issue or a benchmark suggests a repeatable difference, using the same settings, resolution and scene.
Do the minimum or recommended PC requirements guarantee smooth FPS?
No. Rockstar’s requirements describe minimum and recommended hardware eligibility, not a target frame rate at a particular resolution or quality level. Use the in-game benchmark to judge your own configuration.
How do I stop RDR2 stuttering on PC?
Repeat the same benchmark or scene, change one option at a time, and check whether a video-memory warning or long-session pattern is involved. Rockstar’s historical notes describe past issues that were fixed; they do not establish a universal current stutter cause or setting.
The Bottom Line
Start with Rockstar’s quality slider, then test the recommended priority settings in order and validate changes with the built-in benchmark. There is no universal preset or API winner: compare settings and Vulkan versus DirectX 12 on your own PC, resolution and game build.
