Best PC Settings and Mods for Dark Souls: PTDE vs. Remastered

The best Dark Souls PC setup depends on whether you own Prepare to Die Edition or Remastered. Here are the sensible resolution and frame-rate settings, plus the risks of community mods.

The right setup depends on which PC edition you own. For Dark Souls: Remastered, start with the game’s official 1080p, 60 FPS system targets and try the in-game settings first. For the original Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition (PTDE), DSfix is the established community option for higher internal resolution and a frame-rate limit up to 60 FPS—but unlocking the cap can affect gameplay and cause visual glitches.

First, identify your edition

Check your game’s title in Steam or its store/library entry. Prepare to Die Edition and Remastered are different PC releases, and a fix intended for one should not be assumed to work with the other.

Edition or option Resolution and frame-rate approach Main trade-off
Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition (PTDE) DSfix can raise internal rendering resolution and remove the 30 FPS cap, with a conservative limit of 60 FPS. It is a community mod; uncapped or above-60 play can cause gameplay problems, and visual results vary by configuration.
Dark Souls: Remastered, stock game Use the game’s settings and Steam’s official 1080p, 60 FPS system targets as a practical baseline. System requirements are targets, not a guarantee of performance on every PC.
Community FPS unlock for Remastered A Nexus Mods listing advertises an unlock for Remastered and PTDE, including rates such as 120 or 240 FPS. Those are mod-page claims; the available information does not establish independent testing, online compatibility, safety, or reliable behavior across systems.

Install DSfix only for a compatible PTDE build

PCGamingWiki describes PTDE as offering few configurable options and documents DSfix as a way to increase rendering resolution and remove the original 30 FPS cap. The original DSfix listing places DINPUT8.dll beside DARKSOULS.exe; its example Steam installation uses the game’s DATA directory, where the executable is located. Follow the instructions for your actual installation rather than copying paths from an example blindly. Read the original DSfix listing and its installation instructions, and consult PCGamingWiki’s PTDE page for edition-specific context.

A separate Nexus Mods page for “DSFix 3.0 – Modern System Fixes and More” reports an update on October 1, 2026. Its author claims fixes for modern Windows 10/11 systems, high-DPI displays, and frame pacing, and says it supports only the latest Steam version of PTDE; the author warns retail/GFWL builds will not hook properly. These are the listing author’s claims, not independent test results. Check the page and archive manual against your exact build before installing: DSfix listing and DSFix 3.0 listing.

Use a cautious resolution and frame-rate configuration

  1. Start with your monitor’s native resolution in DSfix’s configuration, then adjust the internal render resolution if performance or image quality calls for it. DSfix’s author notes that performance depends on the system and scales with framebuffer size.
  2. Turn off the game’s built-in antialiasing when using DSfix; the original mod listing warns that leaving it on can cause graphical issues.
  3. If you enable FPS unlocking, set the limit to 60 FPS or lower. DSfix’s configuration warns that unlocking modifies game code in memory, may cause unintended gameplay side effects or collision failures, and that limits much above 60 can lead to engine issues. Avoid sliding down ladders when the unlock is enabled.

Do not expect every visual element to behave perfectly. The DSfix listing notes that the sun can render incorrectly at vertical resolutions above 720 in some circumstances; custom HUD settings can also mishandle elements such as the curse symbol. Frame-rate or resolution changes are therefore a trade-off, not a guarantee of a flawless modernized image.

Best settings for Dark Souls: Remastered

For the stock Remastered release, begin with its normal graphics settings rather than installing an unlock mod. Steam lists a minimum target of low settings at 60 FPS and 1080p, and a recommended target of high settings at 60 FPS and 1080p. Treat those as official system targets, not measured benchmark results or a promise that every PC will sustain them. Steam’s Remastered listing identifies the PC release and its requirements.

If you are considering a community FPS unlock, treat it as an advanced experiment. The Nexus Mods listing “DS1 FPS Unlock – Remastered (DX11)” advertises support for Remastered and PTDE and rates such as 120 or 240 FPS, with physics fixes. The listing does not establish independent verification, online compatibility, safety, or consistent behavior on all systems. The stock game’s 60 FPS target is the practical reference point; an above-60 mod is not a necessary setting for ordinary play. Check the mod listing and its instructions before deciding whether its claims fit your setup.

Troubleshoot PTDE and DSfix problems

DSfix does not appear to load

  • Confirm the DLL and INI files are in the game location containing DARKSOULS.exe, following the instructions for your installation.
  • Restore DSfix’s default INI settings to rule out a configuration problem.
  • The DSfix author advises disabling overlays that manipulate Direct3D if the mod fails to work.

The FPS unlock crashes

The original DSfix author suggests disabling Windows Data Execution Prevention if the unlock causes a crash. This changes a Windows security setting, so do not make the change casually; understand the security implications and prefer leaving protection enabled unless you have a specific reason and know how to restore it.

Low frame rate or achievement display issues

The PTDE manual says the game disconnects an online session and returns to the title screen if FPS stays below 15 for 30 seconds. It also notes that achievement displays may have a full-screen problem and suggests trying windowed mode, while warning that this does not always solve it. These are legacy PTDE manual notes, not Remastered guidance. See the PTDE PC manual.

Which setup should you choose?

  • You own Remastered and want a straightforward setup: use the stock game, targeting 1080p and 60 FPS according to Steam’s listed requirements.
  • You own PTDE and want higher rendering resolution: consider DSfix, verify that your build is supported, and begin with conservative settings.
  • You want more than 60 FPS: understand that PTDE’s unlock carries documented gameplay and collision risks, while Remastered unlock claims are community-mod claims without established broad compatibility. Keep the stock 60 FPS target if reliability matters more than experimentation.
