- Who is the player character? Do you want to create a self-directed hero, or follow an established protagonist with a defined history?
- How free should exploration feel? Some games reward wandering and small discoveries, while others guide you through a stronger narrative route.
- How demanding should combat be? A punishing boss loop creates a very different rhythm from a comparatively forgiving adventure.

Combat and progression
Combat is real-time and includes swords, signs and equipment choices, but it is not built around the relentless boss difficulty of Elden Ring. You can prepare for encounters, adjust your build and continue a story-led adventure without treating every fight as a technical examination. That makes The Witcher 3 the most suitable choice here for readers who want a substantial fantasy journey but prefer narrative momentum to punishing combat.
Who should skip it

Elden Ring is not the closest match for a relaxed Bethesda-style sandbox. Bosses and ordinary enemies can punish mistakes, and progress often depends on learning attack patterns, managing stamina and using your build intelligently. If you want to wander, gather materials, adjust your equipment and occasionally fight, Elden Ring may feel exhausting. If you want exploration tied to a demanding action loop, it is the strongest recommendation on this list.
