For layered Photoshop-style editing in a browser, Photopea is the closest fit among these options: its official documentation says it opens and saves PSD files and supports layers and masks. For turning a photo into a designed graphic, Canva or Adobe Express is a better workflow match. If your files already live in Adobe cloud documents, Photoshop on the web may be convenient—but Adobe says editing your own photos requires a Photoshop plan, and some desktop features are not available on the web.
These distinctions are based on vendor documentation, not hands-on testing or a universal ranking. Pick the editor that fits the task, confirm your actual file works, and check the final export in the web project where it will appear.

Which online Photoshop alternative fits your web-development task?
| Tool | Best fit | What the vendor documents | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photopea | Layered image editing and PSD work in a browser | Browser-based editing with layers, masks, blending, and PSD opening and saving; a broad list of raster and vector formats. | The feature and format claims come from Photopea. They do not establish that every PSD feature or edge case will be preserved. |
| Canva | Quick photo edits that continue into a graphic or template | PSD is listed as an input; JPEG/JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, and SVG are listed as export choices. | Background Remover and Magic Eraser are restricted to Canva Pro, Teams, and Education, according to its page. |
| Photoshop on the web | Editing in an Adobe cloud-document workflow | Commonly used image-editing features, with web documents saved to cloud documents. | Adobe says some desktop features are unavailable on the web and a Photoshop plan is required to upload and edit your own photos. |
| Adobe Express | Design-led work involving graphics, photos, or video in Adobe’s app ecosystem | Adobe describes design and editing tools and integrations with Adobe apps. | The Express-versus-Canva feature comparison is Adobe-produced, reflects publicly available information as of January 2026, and may change. |
These products serve overlapping but different jobs. A list of supported formats is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that a layered file will remain fully editable after import or export.

- Define the job. Decide whether you need to correct a layered image, convert a file, or create a designed graphic. Choose around that task rather than assuming every browser editor works like desktop Photoshop.
- Check the input. Confirm the editor accepts your source format. If you need to preserve layers or effects, open a copy of the real file and check that the elements you rely on remain usable. Photopea documents PSD opening and saving; Canva documents PSD upload.
- Make the edit and retain the working file. Keep an editable source when future changes are likely. Treat the delivery image as a separate output, not as a replacement for the source.
- Choose an export the project accepts. Canva lists JPEG/JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, and SVG as export choices. Photopea lists JPG, PNG, WebP, and SVG among its supported formats. Select based on the asset and the implementation requirements; these vendor pages do not prescribe a universally best format or compression setting.
- Validate in the destination. Open the exported asset in the site or app where it will be used. Check that it renders as expected and meets that project’s requirements before replacing a production asset.
What each option offers
Photopea for browser-based layered editing
Photopea’s official page describes cropping, resizing, layers, masks, and blending, as well as PSD opening and saving. Its format list includes PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, WebP, SVG, PDF, AI, AVIF, HEIC, and TIFF, among other formats. That makes it the most directly aligned option here for a Photoshop-like layered workflow in a browser. Its feature list is vendor documentation, not independent verification that every file will behave identically to its desktop counterpart.

Canva for photos that become designed graphics
Canva’s photo editor accepts JPEG/JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, SVG, and PSD files, and lists JPEG/JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, and SVG as export formats. The workflow is a better fit when a photo is going on to become part of a graphic or template than when the main goal is detailed, layer-centric editing. Canva describes the photo editor as free; Background Remover and Magic Eraser are identified as features limited to Canva Pro, Teams, and Education.
Photoshop on the web for Adobe cloud documents
Adobe describes Photoshop on the web as offering commonly used image-editing features, while noting that some desktop capabilities are not available in the web version. Documents edited there save to cloud documents. Adobe also says users need a Photoshop plan to upload and edit their own photos.

Adobe’s FAQ lists desktop Chrome and Edge version 102 or later (64-bit), and Firefox version 111 or later, as supported browsers. It says editing is available in non-mobile web browsers; mobile browsers can view and comment. Browser support and product requirements can change, so check Adobe’s current FAQ before committing to a browser-dependent workflow.

Keep the editable source separate from the web export
A source file and a delivery asset have different jobs. The source supports future edits; the export is the file your web project consumes. Keep the working file when future revisions matter, and produce a separate output in a format accepted by the project. Before switching tools, verify both ends of the handoff: whether the editor can open the source and whether the destination can use the exported file. The vendor format lists identify supported formats but do not guarantee preservation of every editable feature, nor do they establish project-specific compression, responsive-image, or accessibility requirements.
